Round of 128: Division F

Today's Voters

Votes due by Sunday, July 17th at 8 PM EST.

Readers, it’s time for SCIENCE!  Well, not science per say, but today you are going to be our guinea pigs in an experiment.  Our current voting system isn’t the most efficient way to tally votes, and as you’ve seen from various recounts, is often prone to human error.  Today we’re going to test out a new system which eliminates our ability to screw things up (with math anyway).

There is a google form embedded below.  Just enter a username and each of your corresponding scores and hit submit when you are done.  Leave any other comments you have the way you normally would at the bottom (feel free to share your scores too if you are so inclined).

I for one welcome our new automated robot overlords, but we want to know what you think.  Any new system is going to have pros and cons, so please let us know in the comments below what you like and don’t like.  We will be returning the usual system tomorrow while we evaluate how things went.

Anyway, enough with the science (you monster…anyone?) and on to the music.  I’m spending a lot of time working out back-end stuff for today’s experiment, so I’m going to keep the post simple.  Tunes are here.

What Playlist Would Your Harry Potter House Be?

Wow, I can’t believe I am posting this, but it’s culturally and contemporaneously relevant and I’m sure some of you are Potter people- so a couple years back the creative guys over at Paste Magazine put together 4 playlists to represent what might be playing out of the speakers of the 4 houses at Harry Potter’s Castle (I know it’s not Continue reading

Round of 128: Division C Results

Jackie Wilson may be going higher and higher, but these scores aren't far from earth

Well, this was a pretty even-keeled match, with our winners mostly averaging about a 7 and our losers averaging in the 5 range.

Our only upset here is also our closest match, with our lowest-average winner and highest-average loser: #6 seed Mavis Staples’s “Son of a Preacherman” defeats #3 seed “Interstate Love Song” by Stone Temple Pilots by 8.15 points.  The rest of the match-ups aren’t even close, with the higher seeded song taking it.

Round of 128: Division D

Votes are due by 8 pm EST on Friday, July 15.  Tonight we continue to test our new seeding system.  Last time, our 1 seed, Home, was a 13 seed that averaged 8.12 points from 35 voters,

#1 Home (Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeros)

while our 7 seed began as a 2 seed but only averaged 5.9 from 31 voters.  If Tall Trees hadn’t been facing Metro Station in the Round of 256, we might have a very different set of songs tonight.  So far, though, the new seeding system seems to be working out nicely.  We’ll see how it works out tonight.  Here are the songs.  Votes are due by 8 pm EST on Friday, July 15.  And now a bit about the match-ups.

Round of 128: Division B Results

Well, the new seeding system has proved itself.  I was prepared, excited, for some upsets.  Namely, I was ready to see the Cubans blow Adele away, but her supporters came out in the end, and the heartbroken lady-Brit will move on to the Round of 64.

All in all, scores for this round were underwhelming.  28 voters x 8 songs and only one 10 awarded.  Nothing even averaged above a 7.  The highest score went to Stealer’s Wheel who defeated the Replacements, despite some really strong support and enthusiasm for the latter. Continue reading

Results: Round of 128, Division A

The results are in, and like past groups we had a few blowouts and a few nailbiters. We’ll start with the #3 seed from Miss Cyndi Lauper. “Time After Time” defeats “Bang!” by The Raveonettes, 240.1-198.75. Lauper finished the first round with a 6.80 average, but jumps here to a 7.28– it’s these sorts of momentum gains that will provide much of the excitement in ensuing rounds, so let the games begin. In defeat, “Bang!” goes to the Wall of 10’s with nods from Grant and Janos. By the way, the best part of that magazine cover is neither Cyndi’s bracelets nor the Goonies reference- it’s the picture of Elton John as a child.

Round of 128: Division C

Thin Lizzy in action.

This post got deleted twice while I was trying to upload it so, without further ado here it is. The Grooveshark link is here.  For Mavis Staples version of Son of a Preacherman, click here.

First, Jackie Wilson goes up against Thin Lizzy.  As Orce astutely pointed out last round, that although the band states that a jailbreak will happen somewhere in the town, it will probably at the jail. Continue reading

Ken Jennings Tuesday Trivia

After a short hiatus, we are back, bringing you questions from former Jeopardy! champion Ken Jennings’ email list.  To play, email him at tuesdaytrivia@ken-jennings.com.

As for posting the answers below- questions 1 through 6 are pretty easy to Google, but if you know the answer to the weekly stumper, question 7, give everyone else a clue in the comment section below!

1.  What musical choice was offered by Doris Day in 1954 and again by ABBA in the first line of their hit “I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do”?

2.  What did French politician Andre Maginot and shortstop Mario Mendoza both have named for them? Continue reading
