Last rodeo for the Round of 512… everyone pat yourselves on the back for being part of the journey, because we. are. done-zo. Final bracket will be up within the hour. And now, results.
Highest average score of P3 goes to Somalian-Canadian rapper K’Naan’s anthem “Wavin’ Flag,” which picked up 3 10’s and absolutely trounced You Make It Easy by Air, 128.87-68.873 and claims the 2 seed of Division P. Honestly, I thought it was notable when Johnny Appleseed picked up the 3 seed in Division K, but this blows that away. Is this song the 2006 George Mason Patriots of LTDMT? Time will tell.
Closest match-up was Where It’s At by Beck beating Tom Sawyer by Rush, 93-82.5.
Karma Police and Bridge Over Troubled Water were a back and forth, but in the end Radiohead took S&G, 118.69-108.4.
Where Did You Sleep Last Night, or Under the Pines, took Rocking In The Free World, 130.83-101.63…I think you can call that a bit of an upset, this being a non-radio play Nirvana song over a classic rock stalwart with an instantly recognizable riff. Democracy’s a bummer, Neil Young, because just like that you, my friend, are out of the tournament.
And She Was over Holidays In The Sun, 101.4-82.5.
Last, and literally least…in the match-up that everyone absolutely hated, Evangeline defeats One Moment In Time, 94.132-70.903. With a 4.95 average. Over Whitney’s 3.73 average. Yeah, about that…
Out of the tournament: Neil Young, Whitney Houston, Air, and Rush. Simon & Garfunkel suffer their first loss and finish the Round of 512 5-1. Sex Pistols finish 1-1.
256 songs are 1-0. Which will end up 9-0? That’s our job, people. Handing it back over to Janos for the first few brackets, see you all soon.

So I recognize that I forgot to put an end time on the P2 submissions…so I’m just going to call it now (8:30) because the coffee shop with internet closes at 9. There was only one battle that was close— Starlight and Love Shack battled it out back and forth through the day and it looked as if Muse was going to pull it out…then adam came in with a last minute rainmaker +7.5 vote for Love Shack, giving the B-52’s the victory 97.25-94.
As we move forward into the Round of 256, I thought it would be nice to give a toast to those songs that got the highest averages but were still eliminated. The draw is the draw, but there’s no reason to think that in another tourney many of these could have gone on. We enjoyed you immensely…here are the top 25 losers in descending order.
16) American Pie, Don MacLean
Whoa. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Welcome to the 4th highest average in the entire tournament, Billy Joel, and maybe I spoke too soon in my comment. Piano Man finishes with an 8.54 (seriously) average and dummies Everyday, 111-90.5.
The road has been long, there have been peaks and valleys. And somehow Mark O has managed to continue being the most consistent voter in history. Regardless, I am happy to announce that this is the last, last day of the Round of 512. Genre-based opportunities no more for all of our competitors. Starting Monday, it’s nails to the wall, NCAA bracket style “prove your worth as an underdog or get off the court” voting.
Day 2 of Division P is a little all over the place, but as always, we hope you enjoy the match-ups. Remember to keep telling your friends to vote,
Reporting live from Town Hall Tavern in College Park- was hoping to send in scores from Bourbon in Adams Morgan, but apparently 16th street is too good for free internet. Fortunately for us, this UMD dive bar is not.
It pains me to know that 5 out of these 10 songs will not be advancing to the Division P bracket. This group is looking VERY strong, pretty bad ass songs from all sorts of decades. Let’s start the last mile, voters-
Oof. I haven’t been keeping this statistic through the tournament, but the sum of the absolute values of the difference in scores for all five match-ups is 118.5. In other words, every single winner completely ran away with their match-up. Posting the highest score of the day was Piece of My Heart, making mincemeat of Skinny Love, 120.5-85. Of note, this is the second time I’ve seen where a nominator has given the opponent a higher score than their own nomination and noted it in his comment- this speaks volumes to the credibility of all of us as voters. And at any rate, Janis absolutely killed it and holds the 2 seed (8.03 average) for now in Division O, with tomorrow’s votes still to come.
