Music Tournament Round of 256: Division B, Day 2 Results

How fitting for Saturday night- Stayin’ Alive (Bee Gees) pulled off the biggest upset yet, toppling L.A Woman (Doors), 119-106.  We knew the 7+ minute song wouldn’t go all the way, but this is still an early exit, and leaves the Doors with only one song in the tournament (Break On Through).

All Day and All of the Night (Kinks), which Guillermo picked as his dark horse contender early on, held off Hotel Yorba (White Stripes), 132-122.   The loss leaves the White Stripes with only one song remaining- Seven Nation Army.

Despite some muted support from some of us (cough, cough), Creep (Radiohead) beat Boys of Summer (Don Henley), 130-116 .

Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix) def. My Name Is Jonas (Weezer),  130-129.  This was a partisan affair, with voters breaking pretty hard one way or the other.

Don Henley is out of the tournament.

We’ll worry about Dylan v. Dylan if we get there.

Music Tournament Round of 256: Division B, Day 1 Results

The headline was almost a shocker- “Shaolin tactics stun #1 seed Zeppelin!”  Instead, #1 When the Levee Breaks (Led Zeppelin) lurched its way to a narrow win over upstart Gravel Pit (Wutang Clan), 115.6-113.  I went back to WLB’s first round score, and found that the absence of Jordan Ballard (10) and Jim Rock Schiller (9) was unhelpful to the 2nd round cause.  Adrock and I both dropped from an 8.5 to a 6.5.  To me, that song either pumps you up, or just drags along.

#8 Superstition (Stevie Wonder) was in top form, racking up an 8.3 average in taking out #9 In the Midnight Hour (Wilson Picket), 149-136.

#4 Wild World (Cat Stevens) endured a fight from pesky #13 Man on the Moon (R.E.M), 135.3-129.9 .

#5 Hey Jude (Beatles) cruised past #12 Self Esteem (Offspring),  146-119.

All the lower seeds- Wutang Clan, R.E.M, Wilson Pickett and Offspring, are out of the tournament.  That brings the total of eliminated artists to 139.

Music Tournament Round of 256: Division B, Day 2

Before tonight’s match-ups, we have an announcement about ties, since one almost happened today.  In the event of a tie (and following a recount), the artist with the fewest songs left in the tournament advances.   If even that is a tie, double-overtime will be based on a standard deviation formula that Guillermo and I will fine-tune tomorrow.

Listen to tonight’s songs on Grooveshark.

Don Henley and the Bee Gees face elimination tonight.  Vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com.   Votes due at 8:30pm Saturday night, EST.

#2 L.A Woman (Doors) vs.  #15 Stayin’ Alive (Bee Gees)

#7 All Day and All of the Night (Kinks) vs. #10 Hotel Yorba (White Stripes).  I’m looking forward to this one. Short and sweet songs.

#3 Creep (Radiohead) vs. #14 Boys of Summer (Don Henley).   Creep pulled off one of the biggest upsets of last round, taking out Time (Pink Floyd).

#6 My Name is Jonas (Weezer) vs. #11 Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix).  This one should be fierce as well.

Music Tournament Round of 256: Division A, Day 2 Results

Our first major upset!  Blondie shocked Bono for the win.  It was razor-tight, but Astrid sealed the deal.

#14 Call Me (Blondie) def. #3 One (U2), 129.75-128.75.   After beating Man in the Mirror (Michael Jackson) in the play-in round, and 99 Red Balloons (Nena) in the Round of 512, Blondie moves on.   A beatable Modern Love awaits.

(Confirmed after recount)

#6 Modern Love (David Bowie) def. #11 Galileo (Indigo Girls) by about 119.25-105.2.  I have to agree with The Catholic that people did not give Galileo enough credit (ironic that Galileo got his greatest support from The Catholic, history considered).  Great lyrics, uplifting tune.  Modern Love got mixed scores from ya’ll, kind of stumbling into the Round of 128.

#7 Sounds of Silence (Simon and Garfunkel) def. #10 California Girls (Beach Boys), by about 148.5-119.75.  SoS really lit it up this round, posting an 8.2 average, marking itself as a real contender in this bracket.

Consider this fact- between his solo career and work with Garfunkel, Paul Simon went an astonishing 9-1 in the Round of 512, tying the Beatles for most songs advancing (though John Lennon’s 2 solo songs leave him as the person with the most songs advancing- 11).   He was always a force in my personal tournaments, and this tournament demonstrates that he is one of the most underrated talents in music.

#2 Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright (Bob Dylan) def. Juicy (Notorious B.I.G), 125.14-112.9.  Dylan was unimpressive in winning.

The Indigo Girls and Biggie become the 134th and 135th artists eliminated from the tournament.

Music Tournament Round of 256: Division B, Day 1

Division B looks filled with upset potential.  Songs are at Grooveshark, and you can vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com before 8pm on Friday.  This is a somewhat dramatic scenario for our lower seeded songs, as every one of them represents the artist’s last stand in the tournament.  Let’s see if Wu, Pickett, R.E.M or Offspring are still around Friday at 8:01pm.

** Check out Wilson Pickett’s guitar player.

#1 When the Levee Breaks (Led Zeppelin) v. #16 Gravel Pit (Wutang Clan)

#8 Superstition (Stevie Wonder) v. #9 In the Midnight Hour (Wilson Pickett) – this is a sweet match-up.

#4 Wild World (Cat Stevens) vs. #13 Man on the Moon (R.E.M)

#5 Hey Jude (Beatles) vs. #12 Self Esteem (Offspring)

Music Tournament Round of 256: Division A, Day 1 Results

We kicked off the Round of 256 in fine fashion, with a record 20 votes cast.   Let’s keep it up. The winners below advance to the Round of 128, in March.

#1 You Can’t Always Get What You Want (Rolling Stones) def. Paranoid (Black Sabboth), 158-131.  That 20th voter was what YCAGWYW needed to top Wagon Wheel for the highest score recorded yet this tournament.

#8 Changes (David Bowie) def. Don’t Worry Baby (Beach Boys), 141-137.  After a come back from behind win, Changes faces an uphill battle next round against YCAGWYW.

#5 Such Great Heights (Postal Service) def. Tired of Being Alone (Al Green), 148-126.  Postal Service looked very sharp, more so than either competitor below.

#4 The Message (Grandmaster Flash) def. #13 Captain Jack (Billy Joel), 134.25-129.5.   Tough one for Billy.   Grandmaster will be a 14 point underdog vs. Such Great Heights.

Black Sabboth and Al Green become the 132nd and 133rd artists eliminated from the tournament.

LTD Music Tournament: Division A, Round of 256

As Guillermo noted yesterday, it’s a long road from 1-0 to 9-0, and today, our survivor songs take the next step on that path.   As most of you know by now, the scores you gave songs in the Round of 512 have dictated their seedings for the Round of 256 until the Sweet Sixteen (You can see the full bracket for Division A here). Thus, You Can’t Always Get What You Want, which had the highest first-round average in Divsion A, will play Paranoid, which had the lowest score of Division A’s first-round winners.

We’ll be doing four match-ups a day, instead of the five/six we did last round, so that each Division spans over two days.

You can listen to the match-ups at Grooveshark, and vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com.  Voting remains open until 8pm on Wednesday.

#1 You Can’t Always Get What You Want (Rolling Stones) vs. #16 Paranoid (Black Sabboth)

#8 Changes (David Bowie) vs. #9 Don’t Worry Baby (Beach Boys)  Don’t Worry Baby is a play-in round survivor (2-0).

#4 Such Great Heights (Postal Service) vs. #13 Tired of Being Alone (Al Green)

#5 The Message (Grandmaster Flash) vs. #12 Captain Jack (Billy Joel)  *Feel free to skip the 30 second non-song clip at the end of The Message- couldn’t find the right version.
