LTDMT: Divison O, Day 3

Alright team, we’re just about ready to wave the orange, last lap lane cards on the 1650 here…we’ve got one more day of Division O, 3 days of Division P, and then we can all breathe for a second. Great mix of tunes here, get your votes in by Thursday at 9 pm by posting a comment here or by e-mailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com if you are so inclined. Entire playlist of match-ups found here on Grooveshark. And from Seattle to the Capitol, from upstate New York to uptown Manhattan, and everywhere else, stay safe during the BLIZZARD OF THE CENTURY! (cue scary ghost sounds)

(Bracketology Update: Divisions L, M, and N are now live. Division L is going to be a bigger cluster than Stalingrad: the top 14 songs in L have higher averages than the 4th seed in M)

Miles Davis & The Cool (Gaslight Anthem) vs. Wagon Wheel (Old Crow Medicine Show)

Unchained Melody (Righteous Brothers) vs. Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong) (If these song links don’t work, I am positive both of these will be available at an individual booth jukebox at your local Waffle House)

Higher Ground (Stevie Wonder) vs. Losing My Religion (R.E.M.)

Last Night (The Strokes) vs. Magic Carpet Ride (Steppenwolf)

Stop In The Name Of Love (Supremes) vs. Werewolves of London (Warren Zevon)

It Makes No Difference (The Band) vs. Mysterious Ways (U2)

LTDMT: Division O, Day 1 Results

Sometimes when you Google image songs that win, the craziest, craziest things come up. But when those crazy things are the cover to the single, you sorta gotta go with it. Wish You Were Here posted the highest score of this first round of Division O, 105.5, over My Back Pages (73.5). Pink Floyd also posted a respectable 8.11 average.

The closest match-up of the day wasn’t even that big of a nailbiter. Unfortunately for Don MacLean, this’ll be the day that his LTDMT participation dies. Fortunate Son put an end to American Pie, 101.5-96.

The Disarm/Today hiccup will make the next scores look sort of weird, so disclaimer- of the five voters that voted for Disarm vs. Mr. Brightside, only two sent us replacement votes for Today (Janos e-mailed everyone involved.) So it was only fair to take out the Mr. Brightside votes for the other 3, . Boring explanation over: even without those extra scores, the Killers still killed Today, 69.25-59.

Ring of Fire fireballed past Walk of Life, 98.5-90.75.

Last, the Beasties took Nas & Lauren to town. Sabotage over If I Ruled The World, 89.25-75.5.

Out of the tournament: Don MacLean as previously mentioned, Nas, and The Byrds. Pumpkins go to 3-1 with one left. Mark Knopfler and Co. fall to 0-1 with Sultans of Swing still to come.

Division O, Day 2

Sorry for the delay, folks, but the indie garage bands I saw at 9:30 club last night kept me up a little long. Hopefully getting this up early enough in the morning to compensate a bit. Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd) vs. Say It Ain’t So (Weezer)

Dream On (Aerosmith) vs. Waiting For The Great Leap Forward (Billy Bragg)

Proud Mary (CCR) vs. Safe European Home (Clash)

Jailhouse Rock (Elvis) vs. Two Step (Dave Matthews Band)

Skinny Love (Bon Iver) vs. Piece of my Heart (Janis Joplin)

Division N, Day 3 Results

Gentlemen and ladies, it is good to be back at the helm, particularly in such an amazing part of this tournament. Home stretch here, the Round of 512 is almost done, and Division N has ended with a number of nail-biting victories.

Laid (James) and Roxanne (Police) duked it out for much of the last two days, but in the end those guys ended up on top, 86-83.

On a much closer match-up, after a ton of back and forth Good Lovin’ ended up on top of Sweet Caroline, 85.5-85. Doesn’t get closer than that, folks.

Smells Like Teen Spirit over Mama Tried, 96-80. As I related in my comment, I maintain this was a bad first round match-up, but se la vie.

Paint It Black put good work to Chimes of Freedom, 87-64.5.

AC/DC put on a nice showing, 92-84.5 over Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, and posted a 7.7 average. This is highest of this round, but in a Division as strong as N, we’ll see…

Last, Golden Slumbers Medley put a close to Long Way Home, 90.5-80.

Out of the tournament: Neil Diamond, Merle Haggard, Police, Cyndi Lauper, Tom Waits.

LTD Music Tournament: Division O, Day 1

After today’s post I hand it back to Guillermo to close out the epic Round of 512.  Thanks to all of you who have participated in this long and winding road.  As you can tell by looking at the Bracketology charts, our best days are ahead of us, albeit without the dozens of artists who were eliminated since late December.

Below are today’s matchups, available at Grooveshark except Today.   You can vote by commenting below or emailing ltddotorg@gmail.com before 9pm Tuesday.  As noted earlier today, for every new voter you bring in, you earn ability to give one song an “11”.

American Pie (Don McLean) vs. Fortunate Son (CCR)

Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash) vs. Walk of Life (Dire Straits)

My Back Pages (Byrds) vs. Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd)

Today (Smashing Pumpkins) vs. Mr. Brightside (Killers)  (*Sorry- this matchup originally included Disarm- I had forgotten an earlier promise to the Smashing Pumpkins coach to switch in Today. People who voted for Disarm will have the chance to change their scores, of course.)

Sabotage (Beastie Boys) vs. If I Ruled the World (Nas)

LTD Music Tournament: Division N, Day 2 Results

One of the finer days of the tournament closed out with some impressive scores.  Keep in mind, as you look at these numbers, that the Music Tournament Pregaming Party at my apartment last night had to be cut short so we could see the Midnight Spin show, which explains why scoring is down for the last two match-ups.

Bullet With Butterfly Wings (Smashing Pumpkins) def. Ramblin’ Man (Allman Brothers), 106-94.

Somebody to Love (Jefferson Airplane) def. Right Now (Van Halen), 108.5-93.3. And just like that, Van Halen is out of the Music Tournament.  Damn.

Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag (James Brown) def. Young Americans (David Bowie), 94.5-93.5. I’m a little peeved about this one.  Anyone who gave this lower than a 6 should blast it in a jukebox bar on a Friday night.  Treat yourself.

Instant Karma (John Lennon) def. Fast Car (Tracy Chapman), 82.5-79.5.  This was a shocker- Fast Car was up 2.5 with two voters left, but Lennon would not be denied.  Tracy Chapman is out of the tournament.

Solsbury Hill (Peter Gabriel) def. All Things Must Pass (George Harrison), 81-77.

This one goes to 11!

That’s a reference, of course, to one of the great scenes in movie history.

Now you can go up to 11 too!  Because we’re always looking to boost participation and diversify the musical tastes of our voting population, the following offer is now on the table:

For every new voter you bring in, you will be granted the ability to give a song of your choice an “11”.  That means when one of your very favorite tunes is pitched in a tough battle, and you easily would have given it a “10”, and just need that little extra kick…now you can take it to 11.  Guillermo and I will limit ourselves to one “11” under the new system, but for other folks it’s open season, so take the chance to roll with it.

LTD Music Tournament: Division N, Day 1 Results

In what strikes me as an upset, Zombie (Cranberries) knocked off Sweet Child of Mine (Guns n Roses), 112-108.

Under the Bridge (Red Hot Chili Peppers) was in fine form, defeating Land Down Under (Men At Work), 127.5-105, averaging 7.9.

Straight to Hell (Clash) def. Refugee (Tom Petty), 116.5-115.5. Wow, the Party turned the tide.

Sluggers Bad (U2) and Badlands (Bruce Springsteen) duked it out,  Bad prevailing, 117-105.3.

Don’t Be Cruel (Elvis Presley) def. Annie Waits (Ben Folds), 103-91 .  Folds is out of the tournament.

LTD Music Tournament: Division N, Day 3

Welcome to the last day of Division N.  I like this eclectic bunch, and you can listed to it on Grooveshark except for Golden Slumbers Medley. Also, there are various versions of the Dylan tune, so if you have one you prefer to the No Directions Home version, use it.  Votes are due by 9pm Monday, and you can vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com.

Good Lovin’ (Young Rascals) vs. Sweet Caroline (Neil Diamond)

Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana) vs. Mama Tried (Merle Haggard)

Laid (James) vs. Roxanne (Police)

Paint it Black (Rolling Stones) vs. Chimes of Freedom (Bob Dylan)- perhaps an appropriate tune for this weekend, given the situation in Egypt.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (Cyndi Lauper) vs. You Shook Me All Night Long (AC/DC)

Long Way Home (Tom Waits) vs. Golden Slumbers Medley (Beatles)

LTD Music Tournament: Division M, Day 3 Results

This was a rough day, the first one in a while that produced no viable contenders (loosely defined as a song that averaged in the high 7s or above 8).  Plenty of those in M1 and M2.  Nevertheless, today’s podium features an early hip-hop song, a reggae song, a grunge anthem, a melodic folk-rock tune or a ska song, and a nice mixture of classic and 90s rock in the remaining 2 matches.  That’s what this tournament’s all about.

Rapper’s Delight (Sugarhill Gang) def. Material Girl (Madonna), 98-87. Like a Prayer will represent Madonna in the Round of 256.

The Harder They Come (Jimmy Cliff) def. I Can Hear Music (Beach Boys), 90-70.  Some of you questioned the inclusion of this Beach Boys song.  Since 4 of their songs are already advancing, I thought it would be a nice twist to include this sleeper tune from their mid-60s portfolio rather than a surfing hit.  The Violent Femmes agree with me- check out the fadeout coda from “American Music”.

California Stars (Wilco) def. The Impression That I Get (Mighty Mighty Bosstones) , 97-91.

Jeremy (Pearl Jam) def. Subterranean Homesick Blues (Bob Dylan), 88.5-87.  Dylan drops to 3-5 this round, with one song left.  Pearl Jam improves to 2-0.

Rock ‘n Roll N***** (Patti Smith) def. Heart Shaped Box (Nirvana), 89.5-87.5.

Brown Sugar (Rolling Stones) def. Peaches (POTUS).  95-90.5.
