These four tunes are classic, classy, and the four highest seeds from this side of the bracket.  Listen at Grooveshark here, and vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com before 8pm on Monday.  Enjoy the rest of this fine weekend. Continue reading

Quarter Finals: Left Side of the Bracket

Guillermo and I are beyond excited that we’ve all made it this far.  Of the eight remaining contenders, five or six have a real shot at this thing.  Back in January, an impressive win meant little for a song’s fortunes, as the title was still eight wins away.   Now a mere three matches (and eight days) separate these intrepid songs from being crowned champions.   To bring you the quarter finals we are deviating from our usual four match-ups a day to spread the quarters over two days. Elite Eight Fun With Numbers!

Alright! More graphs and statistics! To kick us off, now that we only have eight songs, I thought it might be a little cleaner to redo the graph and show everyone what’s going on, do some trends, do some voter highlights, etc, etc, etc….basically things that are more fun to do on a waning Friday than teach myself how to use Adobe inDesign (ugh. what is this thing.) Sweetest Sixteen: Right Side Results

Alright voters, the Sweet Sixteen is over and we have pared the field down to an Elite Eight. I’ll be handing that round back over to Janos, who steps in as an administrator starting tomorrow evening with the release of the first two match-ups.

Finals Parties: Remember, any voters that live in the Manhattan area are free to swing by Janos and Cristina’s place next Saturday, where they’ll be hosting a get-together involving a collective listen to the Championship Match. If you live in the DC area, I will be getting to the Red Derby bar in Petworth around 5 pm to scope out a corner of the rooftop with some speakers to hold a listen get-together there. The match in DC will be starting at 8 pm sharp next Saturday night.

There were some really great battles going on all day today, and two of our four matches were back and forth for the last 48 hours before a winner came out on top. We don’t call it the Sweetest Sixteen for nothing. And now results…

Sweet Sixteen Results: Left Side Of The Bracket

First and foremost, hats off to everyone! Voter turnout was nothing short of superb for this round, and we have plenty of tournament records to announce. First, a total of 29 voters submitted scores before the deadline, which is just amazing- the old record was 23. We’ve come a long way from Division B’s Round of 512, which literally averaged 7.6 voters and included scores like “Boys of Summer” over “Walk Like An Egyptian”, 56.5-51.5. The more voters, the more legit our results. Seven out of eight songs make the Wall of 10’s and two different regulars flex their 11’s. Lotta passion here, but now to the results…

Sweetest Sixteen: Right Side Of The Bracket

Votes due Thursday, April 21st at 8:00 PM EST: While scores continue to come in on the fates of songs on the left side of the Final Bracket, we are going ahead and starting the votes for the right side. Of these eight amazing songs, only four will go on to the next round to join the Most Elite Eight. Grooveshark link is here except for Hey Jude, vote by commenting on this post or by e-mailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com. Best of luck to all songs, but let the most worthy song advance. Continue reading

Sweetest Sixteen: Left Side Of The Bracket

Votes due Wednesday, April 20th at 8 pm EST. Are you excited? I’m excited. I have been waiting for months to see how this final bracket would shake out. Now that it has been finalized, I am not disappointed. To date we have had 101 individual voters at one point or another submit scores on 45 play-in match-ups, 256 first round match-ups, 128 second round match-ups, 64 Division Quarterfinals, 32 Division Semifinals, and 16 Division Finals. Strange to think after all 541 of these contests, we only have 15 more match-ups on which to vote before we have our Tournament Champion. I agree with Garcia’s oft-quoted line from “Truckin'”- lately it occurs to me what a long, strange trip it’s been. And it’s not over yet. Continue reading

Sweetest Sixteen Analytics

Who’s a huge Excel dork? This guy. Regardless, this is pretty cool to check out with the whole “endurance” through the rounds thing in mind. For instance, “Thunder Road” may have a sixteen seed, but it’s as clear as day that the song has been growing on voters (after that abysmal Round of 256 score, that just looks ugly.) Hallelujah looks like it may have peaked a few rounds ago. Preacherman looks like a sinusoidal curve. Piano Man seems to have been in free fall for some time now. And Baba is looking pretty f’ing mean.

T-minus 10 hours…

The Final Bracket

On December 2nd, 2010, we started Day 1 of the Play-In Round of the Living The Dream Music Tournament. 138 days later, sixteen Division Champion songs remain alive, each with just as much of a right to the Championship as any other (does the winner win a Cup? We should name a Cup, I don’t know why we haven’t yet.)

My friends and fellow voters, I present to you: The Final Bracket. Left-side match-ups start Monday, April 18th at 8 PM EST. I am very, very, very excited.*

Monday morning note: Was reviewing what I did last night and realized I made a slight error from using an outdated sheet. The only change is that Baba O’Riley is now the 4 seed and Bohemian Rhapsody is the 5 seed- they are now in the right places on the bracket. Sorry about that.

Music Tournament Round of 32: Division M, N, O and P Results

Big announcement to start things off tonight: On Saturday, April 30th, the night of the Music Tournament finals, I’ll be having people over at my apartment for a listening party, followed by an intense Finals listening at 9pm.  As the date approaches I’ll release exact details.  Meanwhile, Guillermo will host a similar session in the D.C area.  For our friends in Africa, Albany, Boston, LA, Seattle and elsewhere- it’s up to you to coordinate.  For the Finals, votes will all be emailed and not released until 9:15pm EST, so everyone is voting blindly.

Now, on to M, N, O and P.  Limited commentary, because Astrid and Ogden’s lopsided scores helped flip a couple of matches late in the game. Continue reading
