LTD Podcast with Brett Martin, Founder of Sonar

It’s time for another round of our  Living the Dream Weekly Podcast.  I interview Brett Martin, founder and CEO of Sonar, one of the hottest new apps in town.

We discuss Sonar, the direction of social media, and the effect of the tech sector on the economy.  Heady stuff for someone like me- I fight my urge to slip into Luddite-land every day.  The podcast ends in dubious fashion when my phone inadvertently goes mute, but Brett does nicely landing the plane solo.

We do not discuss how we once crashed a wedding in Ohio.  That story is for another time.

Round of 256: Division G, Right Side Results

Good Evening friends!  We’ve all been on the edges of our seats for these results and after hours of tabulating scores, I finally have results for you!

First of all, we had 31 voters in this round — not bad for a Sunday night post!

11 Seed, Cake Moves On

11 Seed -- Cake -- Advances

When I put together the post about these match-ups, I would have never guessed that things would turn out the way they did.  I wouldn’t have picked a twangy country duet over Tears for Fears.  I wouldn’t have expected a difference of almost 165 points between the lowest and highest scoring songs.  And most of all, I wouldn’t have excepted Cake to advance, much less be the high scorer of the night.

The Scores:

Round of 256: Division H, Right Side

I am quite pleased to have posting duties for this bracket, as I dig pretty much all of these songs.  We have a good mix of energy and emotion on the eight tracks below, which you can listen to here. Vote by commenting below before 8pm (EST) on Thursday.

#2 Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) vs. #15 Teenage FBI (Guided By Voices).  This is Dr. J’s top seed, and a good choice.   Clapton was a bit of a band slut in these days- fitting in this Blind Faith album  between dominating stints with Cream and Derek and the Dominoes (plus a cameo on While My Guitar Gently Weeps). Ken Jennings Tuesday Trivia

Every Tuesday we bring you questions from former Jeopardy! champion Ken Jennings.  To get on Ken’s scoreboard, email him your answers at tuesdaytrivia@ken-jennings.com.

As for posting the answers below- questions 1 through 6 are pretty easy to Google, but if you know the answer to the weekly stumper, question 7, give us all a helpful clue in the comments below!

Round of 256: Division G, Left Side Results

I am also late posting tonight, after a tough slog of a basketball game. What a wild set of matches.  Tens were being dished out like whoa , the DJ Roomba family dropped another carpet bomb, and a new championship contender was born. Let’s take a look.

#1 Up Around the Bend (CCR) def. #16 Master of Puppets (Metallica),  229-158. Would CCR have won this match-up under any circumstance? Sure.  But the Roomba smash, a 39.5-11.5 nod to CCR, definitely didn’t help. DJ Roomba, reporting her family’s scores, noted, in what may be the understatement of the season, “We are not Metallica fans.”  Master of Puppets made the Wall of 10s in defeat, thanks to Danno, Adrock and Troch.  Canton represent! Round of 256, Division H, Left Side

Well, it’s another exciting day in PCT land!  Apologies for the tardy post… blondie here was hanging out at her favorite place (the shopping mall) and decided to leave her keys in one of the stores and then convinced herself that she locked them in the car, had mall security break into the car for her, only to find that the keys were nowhere inside the vehicle and were eventually found in the store.  But enough about that… let’s talk about more exciting things, like today’s music match-ups!

I’d say it’s a rock-heavy day.  With the exception of the Pharcyde, all of today’s selections can be classified as rock, but don’t think they lack variety – we’ve got everything from banjos to crying (laughing?) babies featured in these songs, artists from around the globe, and multiple decades represented.  Grooveshark link is here.  Votes are due via the comment section by Wednesday, June 22, at 8 pm EST.

Round of 256: Division F, Right Side Results

DJ Roomba and Family

Not a bad showing for a weekend set of matchups. 30 voters weighed in over the last 48 hours.  Most of these matchups were pretty uneventful though, following about the same trend throughout the two days of voting.  What was exciting though was the addition of 5 new voters in the last hour of voting.  “Family Roomba” is together for Father’s day, and what better way to celebrate than sitting back and listening some music? Round of 256, Division G – Right Side

First of all, Happy Father’s Day to all of the People who are Dads!  An extra special Father’s Day is in order for PCT Regular – Marc, who recently joined the Daddy Club.  Congratulations!

(2) Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man -- Conway Twitty & Loretta Lynn

(2) Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man -- Conway Twitty & Loretta Lynn

Today we have a duet between my Grandfather’s favorite country star, Conway Twitty and the Van Lear Rose, Loretta Lynn.  “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man” peaked at #1 on the Billboard Country Charts in 1973.  Grandfather has been humming it ever since.  Challenging this 2 seed, we have Tears for Fears’ first international hit: “Mad World.”  Roland Orzabal has said that he wrote this song while living above a pizza joint in Bath, and that, since Bath isn’t very ‘mad,’ he should have called the song “Bourgeois World.”

RIP: Clarence Clemons

“When the change was made uptown and the Big Man joined the band…”

-10th Avenue Freezeout

Clarence Clemons, one of the key members of Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band, passed away six days after suffering a debilitating stroke.  He was 69 years old.

He was a force in the studio and during their live shows, but beyond the music, it was clear that Bruce and he really loved each other.  Thank you to Youtuber Charlie Giordano for capturing this beautiful solo from “Jungleland”.

The Big Man will be missed.

Results: Round of 256, Division F, Left Side Results

TV on the Radio eagerly check results

I got my first opportunity to man Guillermo’s massive vote-tracking spreadsheet for this round, and let me tell you it’s a finely crafted piece of work.  Let me also tell you that it might drive you insane if you have an older computer that just really needs to, you know, think about it before scrolling over a couple of columns.  Anyway, on to the results.
