Mumford looks ready to go. Do they have what it takes?

128 songs have waited in the wings, rubbing their hands together to see how the rest of the road to the Sweet Sixteen will look for them. The waiting is over, and the divisions are out. Division A is full of some good looking battles- Grooveshark link is here. Listen to the match-ups and give each song a score between 0 and 10 by commenting on the post. The rules are here, follow your hearts, and let the best song advance to the Division semi-final.

First Round Awards!!! (Part 2)

So we’ve done some more number crunching and we’ve got another 4 sets of awards to dole out in appreciation of our voters.  Before I jump into that, a few quick stats about tournament participation so far.  The Round of 256 went on for 37 days, drew in 128 unique voters and 7,552 votes were cast.  That’s almost 3 times as many people and almost twice as many votes than we saw in the LTDMT!  So thanks to everyone who has been listening and voting.  We here at Living the Dream are having a lot of fun, and we hope these numbers are showing that you are too.

On to the awards! Continue reading

NEW BRACKETS ARE UP!

Actually, Helicopter reseeded it. I just helped.

What a weekend of reorganization! I am happy to first of all announce that we have successfully redistributed our songs based on the first round scores. New divisions can be found here, check and see where your song ended up!

I’m pretty pumped about this, as this goes a step beyond our seeding in the first tournament- granted we seeded songs after the Round of 512 then, but we kept them in the same divisions. As a result, we had Elite Eight songs playing each other way too early and other songs in weak divisions with basic walkthroughs to the Sweet Sixteen (no offense, “Stand By Me,” but battling “We Built This City On Rock And Roll” for an S16 berth was a little ridiculous.) This way, we don’t have a single weak division, and a ton of opportunities for upsets and exciting scores in our future. Check out the new divisions and get ready to start the Round of 128 tonight!

Round of 256 Finale: Division P, Right Side Results

Wow wow wow. I can’t think of a better way to finish this Round than to have one of these match-ups be decided by 0.06 points. I don’t think anything like that has ever happened in the history of music tournaments. Since the dawn of time. Wow. On to the results… Continue reading

First Round Awards!!! (Part 1)

Arcade Fire won an award. Did you?

You’ve given your hearts and ears to listening to these songs that the world has nominated, and now is the time to get recognized! Thank you voters for everything you do- you make it happen and none of this would be possible without you.

Traditionally, we take time between the big rounds to recognize voters in different ways. This time around Danno will be doing a second awards post with some new fun categories, but I’ll stick to the traditional ones and put this up for your viewing pleasure. All of these awards apply through every day of match-ups EXCEPT the last round of Division P, since those numbers aren’t in yet. And now….[drumroll]…. Continue reading

Round of 256: Division P, Left Side Results

The NASA Space Shuttle wasn’t the only countdown going on today.   With today’s results in, we stand on the precipice of the second round- only one more day of voting to go!

#16 Snow Is Gone (Josh Ritter) def. #1 Northern Sky (Nick Drake), 159-156.5.   In the closest match-up of the day, Nick Drake built an early lead, but Ritter fought back all of Day 2, winning on the final few votes.  Another #1 seed going down builds the case for Guillermo’s revamped seeding system coming this weekend.

#8 Ain’t No Mountain High Enough (Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell) def.  #9 Eve of Destruction (Barry McGuire), 181-153.  Love and joy triumphed over 60s style angst.  While McGuire had some strong supporters, Marvin and Tammi make the Wall of 10s thanks to Adrock and Chris Roomba, finishing with a sterling 7.53 average. NASA Space Shuttle Launch Podcast with Carrie!

Space may be the final frontier, but the frontier will be closed to Americans for a little while, as we prepare for NASA’s final Space Shuttle launch today at 11:26am (EST).

To take us through this momentous occasion I’ve enlisted my old buddy Carrie, who worked the Hill as a Congressional staffer focused on the space program. Get in the mood with some Space Oddity, and then listen to the conversation here.

Learn how we are ceding space to the Russians, whether we can ever go to Mars, and what would happen if we ever came across real life “unobtanium.”   It’s a fascinating world out there. Continue reading

RESHUFFLE (i.e., we’re reseeding the tournament)

Gene Simmons and Chad Kroeger had nothing to do with our reshuffle

After myriad comments in the People’s scores regarding the seeding system, the contributors have gotten together and decided to do something about it. As I’ve previously explained, we let the voters seed themselves if they were awarded more than one nomination, and then we filled in the blanks with new nominations. Now that we actually have scores and data, we are going to use those numbers to reseed the whole tournament. We’re going to ignore the old rules about nominators’ songs being in the same division and all of that, and instead give the Top 16 survivors #1 seeds, the next 16 #2 seeds, etc., etc. So look out for that on Sunday- as soon as we get our final scores in for Division P, Right Side, I will be reconfiguring all the brackets and putting songs in logical spots. Who knows where your song will end up? Only time will tell! Yup.

Thanks for voting and for participating in this round! Danno and I are going to work on some sweet awards stuff for the weekend, look forward to that, and don’t forget to tell your friends to get involved!

-Guillermo
