Ken Jennings Music Trivia

I had been tempted to stop posting Ken Jennings’ weekly trivia after no one got the challenging “Question #7” the last two weeks.  This week, however, it is more than fitting for the Peoples Choice crowd.  See if you can crack this code:

7.  What unusual distinction is shared by all these albums?  Arctic Monkeys’ Whatever People Say I Am That’s What I’m Not, The Beatles’ Abbey Road, David Bowie’s Young Americans, Jay-Z’s The Blueprint, Keith Richards’s Talk Is Cheap, Frank Sinatra’s In the Wee Small Hours, The Smiths’ Louder than Bombs, Van Halen’s 1984.

If you figure it out, drop a hint the rest of us. We’ve got til’ next Monday.

Round of 128: Division O

Hope everyone’s week is off to a good start. Here are the big questions for Division N:

1. Can anyone stop Romeo and Juliette? The Dire Straits juggernaut put up monster numbers in the the Round 256, and nearly 20% of voters think it will go on the way. It isn’t expected to have much trouble against Robyn, but it’ll be worth keeping an eye on the average scores in the rest of the division. Continue reading

Round of 128: Division M Results

Oof…a not so good landmark on this results post- for the first time in a long time, we had no song breaking into triple digits on scores. With 14 voters, Division M being the so-to-speak “last pick 1st round, 1st pick 2nd round” of the snake-style reseeding, and this being a weekend post, it was a perfect storm. Let’s get to results and hope we can pick things up this week! Continue reading

Round of 128: Division N

Our favorite cartoon band returns to fight on

Votes due by Tuesday, July 26th at 8 PM EST! We took a break for a day- sorry for the stoppage but given our strugglefest turnout the last few days, maybe not so terrible to push voting to the weekdays? Anyways, three divisions left before we launch into the Round of 64! Let’s keep up the momentum and finish with a bang. Songs are all over the place, couple classics, a world selection, some modern stuff. Listen hard and vote with your hearts. No google form today, I don’t have time to teach myself how to set it up and I sorta like entering the scores manually anyways. Use the Grooveshark link or the playlist. Best of luck to all songs! Round of 128 Division L Results

This seems like home to them

Voters! I must lecture you briefly! A weak showing, this, with only 12 voters turning out. If you are in Seattle I understand, because we are at last having some weather that resembles summer, so your absence from a computer is justified. As for the rest of you, I hear that you’d rather die than go outside, so unless the heat from your computers would have pushed you over the edge (and, from what I gather, this might just be possible), you have no excuse.

This will be a quick post with just the results, ma’am. I’m out at an all-day music festival so I got the bones of this up before results were complete.

Florence + the Machine stomps over the competition and earns her way onto the Wall of 10s with nods from Eileen, Mark B, and Catholic Nick, with “Dog Days are Over” defeating The Boss’s “Streets of Fire,” 104.8 to 68.75.

Creedence Clearwater Revival sends The Animals back to Walker or wherever they came from, with “Down Around the Riverbend” defeating “Gonna Send You Back to Walker,” 95.7 to 77.9.

Round of 128: Division K Results

Kittens Ablaze get extinguished

Finally!  The tournament gets juicy with some upsets.  Most of these match-ups weren’t very close in voting, but 2 of the underdogs kicked some ass and ran out of gum. Continue reading

Round of 128: Division M

I’m posting a bit early today, to help cure those “I’m so tired of being

We all know that you've already checked out. So before you punch out, spend a little time listening to some great tunes!

at work on a Friday afternoon and really want to blow this joint and go have a weekend already” blues. This is a pretty fun looking group of songs, and should be just the thing we need to roll on into the weekend.  Votes are due by 8 pm EST on Sunday, July 24.  And when you vote, try to bring a friend or two along.  New voters are the bomb.   Continue reading

Round of 128: Division J Results

For those of you who weren’t around for the LTD tournament, there is a moment when this long, drawn out exercise starts quickly picking up steam.  As we sit here in the midst of the Round of 128, you may be surprised to know that the tournament is actually 64% over.

Anyway, sorry about the digression.  This was an awfully strong unit, and you guys showed some love for most of these songs.  Continue reading

Round of 128: Division L

The Boss loves the new voting system

Votes due by Saturday, July 23 at 8 EST.

First off, a big thank you to Danno for helping me continue with the nifty new voting system (and by helping I mean doing it for me or walking me through everything step-by-step). I think this system captures the best of all worlds on both the front and the back ends, and will make life simpler for everybody. Well done, Danno. This post also features the Guillermo-discovered and Danno-perfected feature of the embedded Grooveshark playlist, so again big ups to those guys for making your listening and voting experiences quicker, easier, and more user-friendly. Now, on the the music.

Round of 128: Division I Results

So many Faces.

Since the reseeding, 1 and 2 seeds have held their ground with comfortable margins while the 3 and 4 seeds tend to cut it much closer- not exactly rocket science to figure out why, but did that continue in Division I? Did you hear Murdoch got hit with a pie? Fortunately his wife yelled banzai, her version of a battle cry, and smacked the culprit right in the eye! On to results…
