Living the Dream Music Tournament: Day 42

Some classics are up tonight. Listen on Grooveshark, except to Moondance and Another Brick in the Wall. And Yesterday.  Weird. Those are like the three artists not on Grooveshark.

**Also, there are two versions of Walls. Use the one from “Greatest Hits”.  There are two versions of Dylan. Use “Essential Bob Dylan”.  Grooveshark has been a nightmare the last 24 hours.

Crimson and Clover (Tommy James) vs. With a Little Help From My Friends (Joe Cocker)

Fight Test (Flaming Lips) vs. Walls (Tom Petty)

Miss You (Rolling Stones) vs. Born in the USA (Bruce Springsteen)

Pressure Drop (Toots and the Maytals) vs. Signed, Sealed, Delivered (Stevie Wonder)

Another Brick in the Wall (Pink Floyd) vs. Moondance (Van Morrison)

Yesterday (Beatles) vs. Times They Are A Changin’ (Bob Dylan)

Living the Dream Music Tournament: Day 40 Results

Some legendary songs took the stage on Day 40, and the results were often not close. Unfortunately, I couldn’t upload a picture of Tom Cruise driving singing Free Fallin’.

Layla (Derek and the Dominoes) def. Something in the Air (Thunderclap Newman), 128-98. A powerhouse emerges.

Tangled Up In Blue (Bob Dylan) def. Silent All These Years (Tori Amos), 122-97.  Solid effort from Tori, but she’s now out of the tournament.  Somewhere out there (in my drawer) there is a copy of the Ryan Quinnelly Band doing this song with me on lead vocals. It’s worth it’s weight in salt.

Blitzkrieg Bop (Ramones) def. Sell Out (Reel Big Fish), 108-104.  I thought Reel Big Fish would take this – it had a big lead early.

Heavy Metal Drummer (Wilco)  def. Three’s A Magic Number (De La Soul), 103-85.

Free Fallin’ (Tom Petty) def. Just Like Startin’ Over (John Lennon), 125.5-92. Another monster score.

Living the Dream Music Tournament: Day 39 Results

In perhaps the most dramatic match-up of the day, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (Beatles) defeated Crazy (Gnarls Barkely), 102.5-97.5.  Other matches have been closer, even today, but if you run down everyone’s vote, very few people deviated from the 7-6 range, finding these songs to be utter equals.

Bat Out of Hell (Meatloaf) def. Yo La Tengo, 91-78. 90s indie rock continues its losing ways.

You Can Call Me Al (Paul Simon) def. Feel Good, Inc. (Gorillaz), 107-96.  Good effort by the Gorillaz.

Basket Case (Green Day) def. Triumph (Wutang Clan), 104-95.

Wonderful World (Sam Cooke) def. Fire and Rain (James Taylor), 102.5-93.  Astrid beams upon Cooke as his lesser song advances (Twistin is on its way).

The last match-up is still tied. I’m fishing online for someone who hasn’t voted and doesn’t know it’s a tie.  Will update when ready.

UPDATE: Astrid voted after I started writing my post.  So in a sense, she broke the tie.

Sex Machine (James Brown) def. Wild Wild Life (Talking Heads), 90.5-88.  Talking Heads drop to 2-1 this round.

James Taylor is out.  Gnarls Barkley is out. The Gorillaz are out.

Living the Dream Music Tournament: Day 38 Results

First of all, thank you to Guillermo for completely revamping things behind the scenes.  With work it had been hard for me to do anything besides tabulate scores and post match-ups, but Guillermo’s been able to master bracketology, compute songs’ averages for seeding purposes and simplify tournament management.   I’m impressed.  If you haven’t looked at the Bracketology tab above, you really should- previews are up right now for Divisions A and B.

Thanks also to all of you.  Day 38 had 16 voters (not counting Sippy’s solitary salute to Lose Yourself), which is the most we’ve had in this tournament.

On to Day 38 results.

Baba O’Reilly (Who) def. Idioteque (Radiohead), 130-99 .   The outcome was never in doubt, but Baba’s monster numbers (8.1 average) should give it a high seeding in Division H. Radiohead’s topsy turvy round continues, as it drops to 2 (Creep, Paranoid Android) and 2 (Sulk, Idioteque).

Rudie Can’t Fail (Clash) def. No Rain (Blind Melon), 119-116.5 .  This was a nail-biter, thanks in part to a rare “10” down the stretch from Natalie and a return “10” from Cristina.  Two eminently likeable songs.

Psycho Killer (Talking Heads) def. One Tin Soldier (Joan Baez) 120.5-85  .  Talking Heads cruised, improving to 2-0 this round.

District Sleeps Alone Tonight (Postal Service)  def. Sinnerman (Nina Simone), 107.5-102.  Sorry, Nina. You had fans.

Lose Yourself (Eminem) def. Hit Em Up (2Pac), 112-62.   I regret putting Hit Em Up in the tournament after seeing these scores, but 2Pac deserved a second song after “Changes”.  Should have gone with “Dear Mama”.  I’d feel worse if Lose Yourself hadn’t mounted a perfectly respectable score, earning its way to the Round of 256.

Blind Melon is out of the tournament.  Joan Baez is out of the tournament. Nina Simone.

Day 39- LTD Music Tournament (Round of 512)

Division H closes out tonight, and with that I’ll be handing the managerial baton back off to JDM for the next two divisions. Grooveshark link can be found here, except for Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds (remember, same deal as Safety Dance: we’re judging the song, not the crazy, crazy video or excerpt from Yellow Submarine.)

Sex Machine (James Brown) vs. Wild Wild Life (Talking Heads)

Autumn Sweater (Yo La Tengo) vs. Bat Out Of Hell (Meat Loaf)

Feel Good, Inc. (Gorillaz) vs. You Can Call Me Al (Paul Simon)

Basket Case (Green Day) vs. Triumph (Wu-Tang Clan)

Fire and Rain (James Taylor) vs. Wonderful World (Sam Cooke)

Crazy (Gnarls Barkley) vs. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds (The Beatles)

LTD Day 37 Results

According to the internet, Frank Sinatra once said “I feel sorry for people who don’t drink. When they wake up in the morning, that’s as good as they’re going to feel all day.” As some of you are more music history inclined than I, maybe someone can tell me more of the story behind that because it piques my interest. In the meantime, our first five winners in Divison H:

New York, New York takes I Hear A Symphony, 95-81.

Like A Prayer over Candle In The Wind, 100.5-85.5.

Just What I Needed beats out Space Oddity, 103-93.5.

American Girl over Lawyers, Guns, and Money, 110.5-86.5.

We Can Work It Out tops Hook, 109-88.5.

Today we don’t have to say bye to anyone- all five of the losing artists have at least one more song coming up. Good balance to yesterday’s mass exodus.

Day 38 (Round of 512)

Just setting up this playlist had me tapping my foot and nodding my head in anticipation- this is really good stuff, on a lot of levels and through many decades. Day 2 of Division H, all songs available on the Grooveshark playlist.

Voting will close at 8pm on the 12th.

Baba O’Reilly (The Who) vs. Idioteque (Radiohead)

Lose Yourself (Eminem) vs. Hit ‘Em Up (2Pac)

The District Sleeps Alone Tonight (Postal Service) vs. Sinnerman (Nina Simone)

No Rain (Blind Melon) vs. Rudie Can’t Fail (The Clash)

One Tin Soldier (Joan Baez) vs. Psycho Killer (The Talking Heads)

LTD Day 36 Results

Division G is done and Radiohead is the name of the game for today’s results. Before going through the scores though, exciting announcement: the brackets for Division A and Division B are now available! The Bracketology tab has more info on the methodology of seeding, and will house brackets as they are created. Now the scores:

Sulk (Radiohead) defeats Deceptacon (Le Tigre), 78.5 to 62. No one seemed to really like either of these songs so much- Sulk had an average score of 5.6, good enough to beat Deceptacon’s 4.4, but the lowest average by a full point of any other song advancing so far in the entire tournament. Can’t count ’em out, though- just ask the Seattle Seahawks.

Don’t Speak takes Your Cheating Heart, 87-82.5.

Paranoid Android squeaks by Ain’t No Sunshine, 102-100, giving Radiohead a sweep for the day.

Cherub Rock takes Daughter, 98.5-90.5.

Van never really got going here: With or Without You over Sweet Thing, 108.5-95.

Finally, in the most closely contested match, Natalie’s vote with minutes to spare gives Roll Away Your Stone enough to touch out Little Plastic Castles inside the flags, 94.5-94.

Brutal day from an artist survivability perspective: Le Tigre, Hank Williams, Bill Withers, and Ani DiFranco all bow out of the tournament, and Van Morrison goes to 0-2 with two songs remaining.
