LTDMT: Division L, Day 1 Results

The 10’s were out like wildfire this round, and 3 of them went to those guys. Intervention takes Where Is My Mind, 71.5-60.5. I have personally been listening to this song non-stop all weekend. This thing hasn’t stopped blowing my mind, and I look forward to seeing how it does in consequent rounds.

Scores will look a little low, we only had 8 voters this week…I guess everyone else has personal lives or something silly like that. Dancing In The Dark over Heroes, 70.5-61. Redemption Song over Rock With You, 71.5-51.5. Sitting On The Dock of the Bay over Twisting The Night Away, 74.5-56. And Me And Bobby McGee over It’s Oh So Quiet, 71.5-56.

Out of the tournament: Bjork. MJ goes to 4-1. Pixies go to 0-2 with 1 left.

LTDMT: Division L, Day 2

Division L continues. I’m running out of interesting things to say, but I am tearing my hair out a little because two of my absolute, go-to, do not mind my wallet chain, Mossimo and/or Stussy shirts, bedroom speaker blasting songs are up against each other. We’ll see what happens. Votes are due by Monday at 8 pm. Grooveshark link is here, except for Brown Eyed Girl and Helter Skelter (too good for Grooveshark, huh guys?)

Everlong (Foo Fighters) vs. What I Got (Sublime)

Come Sail Away (Styx) vs. Rosalita (Bruce Springsteen)

Light My Fire (Doors) vs. November Rain (Guns N Roses)

Brown Eyed Girl (Van Morrison) vs. What’s Going On (Marvin Gaye)

Helter Skelter (Beatles) vs. Walk On The Wild Side (Lou Reed)

Living the Dream Music Tournament: Division K, Day 3 Results

When I was 8, I spent a few months in the hospital- long story. But one of the five cassette tapes I had for my brand new walkman I listened to everyday was Michael Jackson’s Dangerous. Black and White tops Once In A Lifetime, 91-80.5. Surely the last hurrah, but MJ never really stops, does he?

Better Man over What’s The Matter Here, 72.51-53

Killing Me Softly squeaks past Empire State of Mind, 80-76

In the punk battle, Sex Pistols come out on top 69-64.5 over One Last Caress.

We Built This City over Around the Dial, 77-64. All good, my money was always on All Day And All Night anyways.

Last, Me Gustas Tu rounds out on top of Yeah Yeah Yeah, 72-62.

Out of the tournament: 10,000 Maniacs, The Misfits, and Jay-Z.

LTD Music Tournament: Division K, Day 2 Results

Nothing in this round seemed to blow anything out of the water, but there was the token close match-up that wavered back and forth over the last two days…before falling on Rancid’s side. Roots Radicals defeated Southern Cross, 76-74.75 (apparently more voters are taking Margot’s cue of every now and then voting on a more specific increment than 0.5. Cool with me.)

Boy In The Bubble over Harness in Slums, 75.25-59.5, although more than a few comments indicated that some of us walk away with a better appreciation/knowledge of existence of Archers of Loaf.

Wouldn’t It Be Nice over What A Day That Was, 79.5-58.5.

For Once In My Life over Waiting Room, 80.5-63.5.

The strongest score of the day came out of Joe Strummer, pulling out an 87.5 over Moonlight Mile’s 80.5. Seems like that dude was never not making sweet tunes, with or without Mick. See ya in the 2-5-6.

Out of the tournament: Fugazi. Archers of Loaf. And Crosby, Stills, and Nash. The whole CSN-CSNY thing can be a little confusing, so for additional info, CSNY is also out. And Neil Young solo is 0-1 with one more song to come.

Living the Dream Music Tournament: Division L, Day 1

Division L is looking really, really strong. L1 screams accessibility for new voters too, perfect opportunity to get some more friends involved. Plus, in the same way Janos mentioned earlier that he loved the K2 match-ups, I think the L1 line-up actually might include 8 songs that have been in Elite 8’s of mine own in the past. But to each their own musical inclination. Grooveshark link is here, votes are due by 8 pm on Sunday night. Go get ’em, voters.

Dancing In The Dark (Bruce Springsteen) vs. Heroes (David Bowie)

Where Is My Mind (Pixies) vs. Intervention (Arcade Fire)

Rock With You (Michael Jackson) vs. Redemption Song (Bob Marley)

Twisting The Night Away (Sam Cooke) vs. Sitting On The Dock of the Bay (Otis Redding)

It’s Oh So Quiet (Bjork) vs. Me And Bobby McGee (Janis Joplin)

Division K, Day 3, Round of 512

I feel pretty good saying we are closing out Division K with a bang. I struggled over choosing a picture for the post…you’ll probably see why in the match-ups, lotta recognizable and prolific images associated with these songs and artists. Grooveshark link is here, votes are due by Saturday, 1/22, at 8:00 PM. Follow your heart and best of luck to all songs.

Better Man (Pearl Jam) vs. What’s The Matter Here (10,000 Maniacs)

Empire State of Mind (Jay-Z) vs. Killing Me Softly (The Fugees)

Anarchy in the UK (Sex Pistols) vs. One Last Caress (Misfits)

Black or White (Michael Jackson) vs. Once In A Lifetime (Talking Heads)

Around the Dial (Kinks) vs. We Built This City On Rock and Roll (Jefferson Starship)

Me Gustas Tu (Manu Chao) vs. The Yeah, Yeah, Yeah Song (Flaming Lips)

Living the Dream Music Tournament: Division K, Day 1 Results

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a new contender. With an average score of a whopping 8.38, the sixth highest average score of any song in the Round of 512 so far, Stand By Me defeats Run Around 109-78.

On the other side of the averages, the Grateful Dead were looking to skate into the Round of 256 before the giant-killing duo of Astrid and adam came in with late +8 and +7 respective Temptations votes, allowing Just My Imagination to grab the 73-69 win. I think the big lesson here is while some of us like the Grateful Dead ok, apparently some of us absolutely, positively hate the Grateful Dead. And a band this divisive is simply not going to go far.

Nothing else was too close. Freedom takes Peace Train out of the running, 91.5-75.5. Billie Jean made good work of Smoke On The Water, 94-69. And Man In Black took California Love, 81.5-66.

All five losers have no songs left in the Round of 512. Grateful Dead, 0-5. Tupac, 0-2. Deep Purple, 0-1. Blues Traveler, 0-2. And Cat Stevens, 1-2. We’ll see Wild World in the Round of 256 in Division C next month.

One last observation: in terms of Biggie vs. Tupac, Biggie went 1-1 and we will be seeing Juicy in the Round of 256 as well. So…East coast wins?

Living The Dream Music Tournament: Division J, Day 3 Results

Gaga lovers, you are vindicated, and my bold claims of the invulnerability of Motown are thus disproven. On a late surge, Bad Romance defeats It’s The Same Old Song, 111.5-108.5.

Other results…

Let’s Get It On takes All Night Long, 127.5-100.5. Marvin looking good, probably to be expected.

Hit The Road Jack squeaks over La Bamba, 108.5-107.5.

Train In Vain takes out Caress Me Down, 114-92.

One Headlight had some strong nostalgia supporters referencing 1996 and feeling it. 117.3-101.5, and actually this might be our first father-son pair progressing to the Round of 256. Jakob Dylan, you are appreciated in this crowd.

Last but definitely, definitely not least, Aretha Franklin pounds out 122 points and beats Angel, which accumulated 99.5.

Out of the tournament: Four Topps (0-2. We’ll miss you, but the show must go on), Ritchie Valens, NWA. Hendrix goes to 3-1 with one song left and Sublime goes to 0-1 with the iconic What I Got still remaining.

Voter Appreciation Awards!

At this point in the tournament, I thought it might be fun to throw out some statistics and numbers on you, the awesome voting public, and award you accordingly. I won’t include Janos and I in these first 5, as that would be lame.

Award 1: Lovers Of All Things Musical Award

This award goes to the voters who on average give any song the highest score. There are a good number of one-time voters who hit the top on this (StephenK, Elizabeth B, 2 of the 3 Lardo sisters,) but for award purposes and keeping degrees of freedom in mind, I thought it would be more reasonable to say you had to vote in at least two days of match-ups. (For benchmark purposes, the average score across every vote submitted for every single match-up is 6.809. And for you stats nerds like me, the standard deviation is 1.727.)

Gold Medal: Cristina (7.548)
Silver Medal: Jim Rock (7.262)
Bronze Medal: Astrid (7.127)

Award 2: Keeping Us Honest Award

In the same sense, there is certainly appreciation for those voters who truly scrutinize all match-ups and don’t dole out 8s and 9s like candy. These multi-day voters gave songs the lowest scores on average:

Gold Medal: Carrie (5.850)
Silver Medal: Danno (5.932)
Bronze Medal: Mark B (6.111)

Award 3: Marathon Award

This award goes to the voters that have voted in the most match-ups. You guys have been the backbone- thank you.

Gold Medal: Mark O (133 matchups)
Silver Medal: Lindsay (129 matchups)
Bronze Medal: Astrid (126 matchups)

Award 4: The Equality Award

The unweighted average difference between voter scores on two songs is 1.914. Voters who on average give two songs in a match-up the lowest differential get this award. We know- choosing songs is constantly tough,  makes us pull our hair out at times, and there’s no shame in the heartfelt tie or +0.5.

Gold Medal: Sweetems (+1.405)
Silver Medal: Margot (+1.527)
Bronze Medal: Carrie (+1.643)

Award 5: Gamechanger Award

This award goes to the voters who on average vote with the highest differential between the two songs. These voters are the most decisively in a given camp on a given day. (Yes, that is a picture of Gheorge Muresan.)

Gold Medal: Danno (+3.46)
Silver Medal: Mark B (+2.59)
Bronze Medal: Matt (+2.55)

Honorable Mention: The Almighty 10s

Last, I wanted to recognize the songs to which voters gave 10s- an act not to be taken lightly, and as sure a sign of true love for a song as any. So it’s like if you were one of those two people and your song you gave a 10 to was the other person. I’ve never seen this movie but I think this makes pop culture sense.
