LTDMT: Division L, Day 2

Division L continues. I’m running out of interesting things to say, but I am tearing my hair out a little because two of my absolute, go-to, do not mind my wallet chain, Mossimo and/or Stussy shirts, bedroom speaker blasting songs are up against each other. We’ll see what happens. Votes are due by Monday at 8 pm. Grooveshark link is here, except for Brown Eyed Girl and Helter Skelter (too good for Grooveshark, huh guys?)

Everlong (Foo Fighters) vs. What I Got (Sublime)

Come Sail Away (Styx) vs. Rosalita (Bruce Springsteen)

Light My Fire (Doors) vs. November Rain (Guns N Roses)

Brown Eyed Girl (Van Morrison) vs. What’s Going On (Marvin Gaye)

Helter Skelter (Beatles) vs. Walk On The Wild Side (Lou Reed)

About g-mo

The day I was born, Michael Jackson's Thriller album was at the top of the Billboard 200. I've been trying my best to live up to that expectation ever since.

  1. Guillermo says:

    Everlong 8
    What I Got 7

“I got back on the road and flew down the roads toward Prescott…laughing and telling Helicopter all about the adventure. We were done with Mississippi and onto the road, the story, the life, the life. I blasted “Everlong” by the Foo Fighters and screamed the words to the sky, to that song and every other song. The sun by now was getting close to down, and I got to Prescott around 5 pm or so.” (HCS, p.228)

    Come Sail Away 8
    Rosalita 6.5

3 numbers for you. 2:. 2. 5. Brucie, don’t get me wrong. I love you. Just not this as much as Come Sail Away.

    Light My Fire 5
    November Rain 8

As Regina Spektor so coyly says, the solo’s pretty long, but it’s a pretty song. truth.

    Brown Eyed Girl 7.5
    What’s Going On 6

Love it. But heard it a billion times. This screams senior year of high school for me though, which was a nice time, so point.

    Helter Skelter 4
Walk On The Wild Side 8.5

Helter Skelter, not so much. Walk On The Wild Side is the goddamn, straight up best low-key chilling beat-lyric thing ever.

  2. aiko says:

    Everlong – 7.5
    What I Got – 6
Generally I’ve not been able to stand the Foo Fighters but I was feeling this song today.

    Come Sail Away – 10.
    That’s right. No apologies.
    Rosalita – 4

    Light My Fire – 5.
That is not a bass line that can sustain a 7 minute song.
    November Rain – 6

    Brown Eyed Girl -8
    What’s Going On – 3

    Helter Skelter – 6
Walk On The Wild Side – 9.5

  3. sweetems says:

    Everlong 5.5
    What I Got 7

    Come Sail Away 5
    Rosalita 5

Light My Fire 5 (BAD VERSION. The album version is far too long- can we get the radio version up instead?
November Rain 7 [was a 5.5 but slash’s solo bumped it up]

    Brown Eyed Girl 6
    What’s Going On 2

Helter Skelter 8.5 [it got +1 for its back story.]
Walk On The Wild Side 8

  4. Danno says:

    Everlong 10
    What I Got 7

    Come Sail Away 8
    Rosalita 6
If it weren’t for South Park, these two might be neck and neck for me…

    Light My Fire 5.5
    November Rain 8.5

    Brown Eyed Girl 8
    What’s Going On 5

    Helter Skelter 9.5
Walk On The Wild Side 5

  5. Margot says:

    Everlong – 8
    What I Got – 7

    Come Sail Away – 7.5
    Rosalita – 6

    Light My Fire – 5
    November Rain – 8

    Brown Eyed Girl – 6.5
    What’s Going On – 7

    Helter Skelter – 6
Walk On The Wild Side – 8

  6. natalie says:

    everlong: 8
    what i got: 9

    come sail away: 7.5
    rosalita: 7

    light my fire: 8
    november rain: 9

    brown eyed girl: 8
    whats going on: 3

    helter skelter: 5
walk on the wild side: 8.5

  7. Mark B says:

    Everlong – 8
    What I Got – 5
God damn…Everlong is so good. Hadn’t heard it for ages. The rapping in What I Got irritates the heck out of me.

    Come Sail Away – 8
    Rosalita – 5
Come Sail Away sounding awesome to me right now, especially the first half and the epic face-melter at about 4:35! Definitely not The Bruce’s finest hour.

    Light My Fire – 6
    November Rain – 9.5
November Rain is what karaoke endurance contests were invented for. Brilliant. Oh so close to being a 10.

    Brown Eyed Girl – 6.5
    What’s Going On – 6

    Helter Skelter – 4
Walk On The Wild Side – 5

  8. Nick says:

    The Foofs – Everlong 8
    Sublime – What I Got 9
Both fantastic songs from 90s artists. Really enjoy the vocals on both, solid instrumentals and production. Bradley’s voice is just a bit sweeter and more nostaliga inducing…

Styx – Come Sail Away 7
    The Boss – Rosalita 5
Is Bruce really singing for 7 minutes about picking up a hooker in TJ? Come Sail Away, We Built This City, teeters between terrible and awesome, landing squarely in the ‘great’ category.

Da Doors – Light My Fire 8
    GNR – November Rain 8

Hearing Ray Manzarek (Doors’ Piano Player) on the radio recently tell the story of coming up with the sound for Light My Fire made it sound better to me, even though the instrumentals sound a bit dated now. GNR is trying a bit too hard on November Rain… are those flutes and strings? Also, why are all these songs so damned long!? You better not karaoke these if I’m up next, I don’t want to sit through you mugging through a 3 minute instrumental…

    Marvin Gaye – What’s Goin’ On 7.5
Lou Reed – Walk on the Wildside 9
Such sweet mellow grooves. You have to really be in the mood for Marvin, but Wildside is ALWAYS a good call.

Mumbly McGee – Brown Eyed Girl 8
The Liverpuddlians – Helter Skelter 8
Tough to choose, both classics and yet the opposite of each other. Brown Eyed Girl is one of the few vocal performances by Van you can understand, and is incredibly polished compared to his other work. Helter Skelter, on the other hand, is purposefully cacophanous, paving the way for heavy metal, but its by the original crooning boy band. A toss up.

    • guillermo olivos says:

Your hatred of van morrison is killing me. I wish in fact I could claim not making it to your wedding on that as opposed to just being a poor grad student. Regardless, I just think you are not giving van the man the chance he deserves…

      • Nick says:

I’m not hating on Van G-mo. I gave him an 8 didn’t I? Thats a great song, and I’ve liked most of his other ones, you gotta admit he does mumble a bit…

I’d say I hate more on the eighties synth ‘rockers’ more than anyone.

  9. Goat Face Killer says:

Everlong (Foo Fighters) 4 vs. What I Got (Sublime) 7

Come Sail Away (Styx) 6 vs. Rosalita (Bruce Springsteen) 6

Brown Eyed Girl (Van Morrison) 7 vs. What’s Going On (Marvin Gaye) 8

Helter Skelter (Beatles) 6 vs. Walk On The Wild Side (Lou Reed) 8

  12. Janos says:

    everlong: 8
    what i got: 7.5
    Tough call.

come sail away: 7 Perhaps we should have used Cartman’s version. It’s pretty rock and roll.
    rosalita: 8.5

light my fire: 3 My lowest score in weeks. Was just waiting for the fucking keyboard solo to end. And The Poet rhymes “light my fire” with “set the night on fire”.
    november rain: 9.5

    brown eyed girl:7.5
    whats going on: 8

    helter skelter: 7
walk on the wild side: 9 All of these people are characters from Andy Warhol’s Factory.
