LTD Music Tournament: Division N, Day 1

Folks, I am looking forward to Division N. It’s got sluggers like Instant Karma, Paint It Black, Sweet Child of Mine and Smells Like Teen Spirit, as well as some of my personal favorites, Bad, Young Americans and Annie Waits.  In fact, I’d wager that this is the strongest division of the tournament yet. Here’s how we’re kicking off Day 1:

Sweet Child of Mine (Guns n Roses) vs. Zombie (Cranberries)

Land Down Under (Men at Work) vs. Under the Bridge (Red Hot Chilli Peppers)

Bad (U2) vs. Badlands (Bruce Springsteen)

Annie Waits (Ben Folds) vs. Don’t Be Cruel (Elvis Presley)

Refugee (Tom Petty) vs. Straight to Hell (Clash)

Listen at Grooveshark, and vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com.  You have until Saturday night at 10pm to cast your votes.

LTD Music Tournament: Division M, Day 2 Results

“It’s the terror of knowing what this world is about… ” Under Pressure (Queen/David Bowie) exceeded its high expectations, dismantling Smooth Criminal (Michael Jackson) 111.8-78, while earning a preposterous 8.60 average, the second-highest in the tournament so far.

Other match-ups provided routine fare.

Go Your Own Way (Fleetwood Mac) def. Date with Ikea (Pavement), 93-73 .

Mannish Boy (Muddy Waters) def.  Down in Mexico (Coasters), 87-80  .   This was a fun battle of the classics.

Superfreak (Rick James) def. I’ve Gotta Feeling (Black Eyed Peas), 84-63 .  No love for the Peas from most of you guys, but this is the most downloaded song in the history of music.  So you can run and tell THAT, homeboy.

Call him Ray “Houdini” Charles.   The man behind the piano has won all three of his first round match-ups by a combined total of eight points, defeating Little Richard, Ritchie Valens and the Who in the process.  What I’d Say knocked off A Quick One While He’s Away (Who), 89-84.   The Who finish up the first round with two wins and two losses.

LTD Music Tournament: Division M, Day 1 Results

M1 was pretty ho-hum, other than the blizzard.  The higher seeded song won every match-up, with only one really close battle.  That said, there were some pretty high averages, so be on the look out for Let It Be, and Tiny Dancer next round.

Welcome to the Jungle (Guns n Roses) def. I Fought the Law (Clash), 77.5-74.

Is This Love (Bob Marley) def. Dr. John (Such a Night),77-47 .  Yeah, it was the wrong version of the song, but I’m sure Marley would have won anyway. Dr. John is out of the tournament.

Tiny Dancer (Elton John) def. Kashmir (Led Zeppelin), 91-68.  Zepp drops to 4-4 to finish their first round.  Elton closes at 2-1.

My Girl (Temptations) def. Rock and Roll Music (Chuck Berry), 76-67 .

Let It Be (Beatles) def. Sloop John B (Beach Boys), 93-81.  This was a worthy effort from the Beach Boys, but the Fab Four (plus Billy Preston) were too much.  The Beach Boys drop to a still impressive 4-2 with one song left.  The Beatles, who have the most songs in the tournament (13), improve to 8-4 with one song left.

LTD Music Tournament: Division M, Day 2

Pretty dope to be back at the while for tonight- we’ve got literally seven decades of music ahead of us.  As one of our competitor’s say, “tonight’s gonna be a good night.”  Listen to the songs at Grooveshark, and vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com before 9pm on Thursday.

Smooth Criminal (Michael Jackson) vs.  Under Pressure (Queen/David Bowie).  Can Michael out pop Freddie Mercury AND David Bowie?

A Quick One While He’s Away (Who) v. What I’d Say (Ray Charles).  A Quick One is a match-up nightmare for any song facing it.

I’ve Gotta Feeling (Black Eyed Peas) vs. Super Freak (Rick James).  Kinda gotta listen to these songs when you’re about to rage.  Wednesday night party it is.

Go Your Own Way (Fleetwood Mac) vs. Date with Ikea (Pavement).   Pavement’s only song in the Round of 512, and it’s got fun lyrics if you’ve got Google.

Mannish Boy (Muddy Waters) vs. Down in Mexcio (Coasters).  Call this ‘the battle of the ancients.’  Waters is the grandfather of the rock and blues guitar, and the Coasters were the original cool cats.

LTD Music Tournament: Division L, Day 3 Results

Start spreading the news- Dusty Springfield just became a contender.  The sleeper play-in round song cruised to the Round of 256, crushing Elvis 117-83.5 and posting one of the highest averages yet (8.32!).   The key to Preacherman’s success is that not a single person gave it lower than a 6, while a couple ravers bestowed 9s and 10s.  That formula never stops working.

This round featured two intense battles. The Boxer (Simon and Garfunkel) edged out Touch Me (Doors), 121-119.5.  My hat’s off to both.

In an equally close nailbiter,  Jump (Van Halen) and Another One Bites the Dust (Queen) found themselves tied at 107.5.   StephenK broke the tie, giving Queen a 117.5-115.5 victory. This was a fun one to watch unfold because the standard deviation (we’ll get Guillermo on this) for votes on this match-up were very low.  People respected that this was a toss-up.

Ms. Apple defeated Ms. Winehouse in the battle of sultry troublemakers, 97.5-87.

The Wind Cries Mary (Jimi Hendrix) def. Drain You (Nirvana), 116-101.

North American Scum (LCD Soundsystem)  def. 100,000 Fireflies (Superchunk), 92-63. LCD’s dreadful winning score is a little misleading- plenty of people gave the song high marks, while some also gave it atrocious ones.  Hopefully it’ll grow on those peeps in time for the Round of 256.

Needless to say Superchunk, and by extension of their cover, Magnetic Fields, are out of the tournament.  Amy Winehouse is out.

Van Halen drops to 0-1, with Right Now still left.  Nirvana drops to 1-1, with three songs still left.   Even in devastating defeat, the Doors still have LA Woman lasting into the next round, going 1-2 in the Round of 512.

LTDMT: Division M, Day 1

Division M starts tonight, which means we are 75% of the way through the Round of 512. And 37.5% of the way through the whole tournament. Votes are due by Wednesday at 10 pm. Janos is taking back over for M and N, but I’ll see y’all for O and P. Grooveshark link is here, except for Let It Be. I had a tough time finding a decent version of LIB on youtube, so if you have your own I’d say use that.

**** (Folks, Janos here.  I see I’m late for at least 8 voters, so it’s a lost cause, but for all folks who were staggered by the album version of Such a Night, take a look at this, and maybe you’ll feel better about it)

Oh yeah, and don’t forget to check Bracketology for updates on the Road to the Sweet Sixteen. All the brackets thru Division K are up and live.

I Fought The Law (Clash) vs. Welcome To The Jungle (Guns N Roses)

Is This Love (Bob Marley) vs. Such A Night (Dr. John)

Kashmir (Led Zeppelin) vs. Tiny Dancer (Elton John)

Rock & Roll Music (Chuck Berry) vs. My Girl (Temptations)

Sloop John B (Beach Boys) vs. Let It Be (Beatles)
