Miles Davis & The Cool (Gaslight Anthem) vs. Wagon Wheel (Old Crow Medicine Show)

Higher Ground (Stevie Wonder) vs. Losing My Religion (R.E.M.)

Last Night (The Strokes) vs. Magic Carpet Ride (Steppenwolf)

Stop In The Name Of Love (Supremes) vs. Werewolves of London (Warren Zevon)

It Makes No Difference (The Band) vs. Mysterious Ways (U2)

About g-mo

The day I was born, Michael Jackson's Thriller album was at the top of the Billboard 200. I've been trying my best to live up to that expectation ever since.

Miles Davis & The Cool (Gaslight Anthem) 7.5
Wagon Wheel (Old Crow Medicine Show) 10

This Gaslight Anthem song really impressed me, never heard it before, really liked it. Unfortunately for it, Wagon Wheel has been part of my daily life for the better part of half a decade, and gladly my sixth 10 of the tournament. I almost gave it an 11, but I’m gonna pocket that for a later round

    Unchained Melody (Righteous Brothers) 8
    Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong) 7

I have not one prediction how this one will turn out.

    Higher Ground (Stevie Wonder) 6
    Losing My Religion (R.E.M.) 6.5

    Losing My Religion (R.E.M.) 6.5

      Hey Clare,
Thanks for voting! We generally ask that people score the songs on a scale from 1-10, but in the absence of that, all of your choices will receive a “7” , while the songs you did not pick will receive a “5”. If you see this comment, feel free to update your vote. We do this to seed the winning songs for round 2, and allow people to express whether they had a tough choice or a no-brainer.

  7. Adrock says:

Miles Davis & The Cool (Gaslight Anthem) – 3.5
Wagon Wheel (Old Crow Medicine Show) – 7

I’d never heard either of these songs, but Wagon Wheel was definitely a cool one. I somehow think it’ll be a force to be reckoned with.

Unchained Melody (Righteous Brothers) – 7.5
Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong) – 9

Two absolute classics – Louis’s gravelly voice is just so undeniable though, its hard to see this one ever slipping. Division O is going to be nasty.

Higher Ground (Stevie Wonder) – 9.5
    Losing My Religion (R.E.M.) – 8

This set has made me outrageously happy.

Last Night (The Strokes) – 5.5
Magic Carpet Ride (Steppenwolf) – 7

Stop In The Name Of Love (Supremes) – 7.5
Werewolves of London (Warren Zevon) – 7

It Makes No Difference (The Band) – 4
    Mysterious Ways (U2) – 8

Not one of my favorite Band songs… feels like it just meanders along aimlessly for a while. Oh well. Great hooks in Mysterious Ways were going to triumph most of the time anyway.

Miles Davis & The Cool (Gaslight Anthem) 5 vs. Wagon Wheel (Old Crow Medicine Show) 8.5
Gaslight Anthem had me on that whole “we’re in love with bruce and want to be just like him and we’re really cute on youtube videos when he shows up on stage with us by surprise” thing until I saw them live and realized all their songs are the same song. Its unclear how many wedding venues WW has almost gotten us kicked out of so there’s that.

Unchained Melody (Righteous Brothers) 8 vs. Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong) 6

Higher Ground (Stevie Wonder) 8 vs. Losing My Religion (R.E.M.) 7
Though I think I like the We Are One Inaugural Concert version of higher ground better, but thats just me. The pants on that shakira!

Last Night (The Strokes) 7 vs. Magic Carpet Ride (Steppenwolf) 7.5

Stop In The Name Of Love (Supremes) 6 vs. Werewolves of London (Warren Zevon) 7.5

I won’t bother making a last waltz comment again.

  14. natalie says:

    miles davis & the cool – 5
    wagon wheel – 10
i do like the gaslight anthem’s sound. i’d never heard this song before, and maybe if i hadn’t heard other songs by them i’d be more excited about this one, but they all sound the same. there was no chance wagon wheel was getting less than 10.

    unchained melody – 6.5
    wonderful world – 7
i’m relieved these links worked because i wasn’t too psyched to drive 173 miles to my local waffle house (but shocked to find out that waffle houses exist so far north!)

    higher ground – 8.5
    losing my religion – 9.5

    last night – 9
    magic carpet ride – 7.5

stop in the name of love – 5
    werewolves of london – 8.5

I’ll be voting in a few seconds, hope I still have time…

  18. The Catholic says:

Miles Davis & The Cool (Gaslight Anthem): 5
Wagon Wheel (Old Crow Medicine Show): 9.5
Wow, Wagon Wheel certainly kicks all kinds of ass. This one could go all the way!!! Miles Davis & The Cool just pales in comparison.

    Unchained Melody (Righteous Brothers): 8
    Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong): 9.5
While the Righteous Bros live up to their name, I danced to Wonderful World with my mom at my wedding. That song is just so sweet, Louis was such a phenomenal artist. No contest.

    Higher Ground (Stevie Wonder): 9
    Losing My Religion (R.E.M.): 7
Man, Stevie’s instrumentals… that bass guitar is legendary… as Eddie Murphy said, “He’s a musical genius!”. I LOVE his lyrics too. The only thing that keeps this from a ten are his vocals, which while great, aren’t quite 10 worthy. Losing My Religion is a good song, a little too much of a downer after Stevie… and the tinny instrumentals just sound hollow in comparison.

    Last Night (The Strokes): 5
    Magic Carpet Ride (Steppenwolf): 9
I can see why these are matched up, but Last Night sounds contrived and “forced-retro” while Magic Carpet Ride was way ahead of its time. It’d be a 10 if it weren’t for its ridiculous breakdown.

Stop In The Name Of Love (Supremes): 8
Werewolves of London (Warren Zevon): 8
I liked Warren alot more than I was expecting. Can’t call this.

It Makes No Difference (The Band): 5
    Mysterious Ways (U2): 8
Way too slow song by the band. Mysterious Ways is a solid song on all levels.
