Cheers to Ocean City legend Brett Martin, who made a big splash yesterday at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in New York.    Brett’s been working on an app called Sonar, which allows you to identify social media attributes of strangers in your proximity. Continue reading

Ken Jennings Weekly Trivia

This is our second week bringing you Ken Jennings’ Weekly Trivia.  Last week, we though Kate M. nailed question 7 when she answered that Captain Ahab, Bilbo Baggins, Mother Courage, Huck Finn, Ethan Frome, Sherlock Holmes, Lord Jim, Philip Marlowe, Silas Marner, Napoleon the pig were all characters in banned books.  Turns out that was not correct- all of these characters were pipe smokers.  My answer, that they were all drinkers, was not far off the mark.  Below are this week’s questions.  Sign up by emailing tuesdaytrivia@ken-jennings.com. Talkin’ Trafficking with Lauren Burke

World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War (Book Review)

I’m very excited to be writing this for a number of reasons:

1) This is my first non-music-tournament post

2) Anyone that has talked to me after midnight on any given weekend of at least the last two years has indubitably heard my preliminary thoughts on Zombie Apocalypses in general. And for a lucky few, promises about my plans to fetch them along with grossly arrogant, unproven predictions on my survival abilities Continue reading

Ken Jennings Weekly Trivia

Folks should definitely sign up for Ken Jennings’ weekly trivia.  The 74-time Jeopardy! winner and author of Brainiac has a listserv that gets a list of seven questions every Tuesday. Six are easy to google, so the honor code system is in play, but question seven is meant to be a stumper.   Below I’ve pasted this week’s edition. To play, email tuesdaytrivia@ken-jennings.com.

1.  What animal is the only pinniped with tusks?

2.  Who was the mother of Christopher Wilding, Liza Todd, and Maria Burton?

3.  What TV series was adapted from a book subtitled, “A Town, a Team, and a Dream”?

4.  What can be found to the left and right of the singer of the song “Stuck in the Middle with You”?

5.  What first name is shared by both the namesake founders of Carnegie Mellon University?

6.  What was officially called the “Anti-Fascist Protective Rampart” by its 1961 builders?

7.  What unusual distinction is shared by all these literary characters?  Captain Ahab, Bilbo Baggins, Mother Courage, Huck Finn, Ethan Frome, Sherlock Holmes, Lord Jim, Philip Marlowe, Silas Marner, and Napoleon the pig?

Marathon Day IV: Victory

Marathon Day IV completely lived up to its sky high expectations.  Thank you to all who came, and congratulations to finishers Orce, Democratic Adam, Angelie, Kevin B., Andrea and Matt Oliver.  In addition, major shout out to co-adventurers Gayleem, Cristina, Guillermo, Crispus and all the other folks who put in major hours of marathoning.  For me personally, this was the toughest one yet, but now I know that sweet post-Ivan Drago fight feeling.

The Staten Island Ferry features an odd grab bag of beers available for $3 or $4, but Guillermo has especially pleased to discover Peja Beer, the pride of Kosovo.

On Staten Island we once again bonded with Karl from Karl’s Klipppers.  He drank whiskey with us and told stories about his nautically themed bar.

One of our favorite photos of the day.

The ladies got things going at Coyote Ugly. Yep, like the movie.

The subway is a wild place, especially in the throes of a marathon.

This particular platform hasn’t gotten over the loss of the W line.

Gayleem wanders in the light drizzle.  As many of you know, I have a major gripe with Big Weather, and I was thrilled that Marathon Day survived its fear-mongering predictions for most of the day and night.

Katie made the awesome sign you’ve seen in some of these photos.

Four years on, the song remains the same.
