Round of 128: Division K

Votes due by Friday, July 22 at 8 EST.

Day 2 of experimenting commences, bringing with it another form with comments, and built in results (woo!).  No more babbling about it though, just vote and comment using the form below.  Let us know what you think about this attempt too.

After the reshuffle, Division K coincidently gives us 4 cases of young versus old.  The underdog seed in each matchup is from the last decade, while the favored seed is from the days of yore (or in TLC’s case, the 90s).  Will the newcomers run from shouts of “get off my lawn!” and cane waving or stick around for the Round of 64?  You have 48 hours to decide.

Playlist can be found here, or use our shiny new widget. Continue reading

Round of 128: Division H Results

Before we kick things off tonight, a Happy Birthday is in order:  Many Happy Returns, Janos!

For the most part, the seeding system held true for Division H, with the exception of the 3 and 6 seeds.  We had a healthy number of voters, with 29, which included some familiar faces we hadn’t seen in awhile.  Three songs made the Wall of 10s and 4 artists were eliminated.  Continue reading

Round of 128: Division J

Folks, I turn 29 today, and if you had told me even a single birthday ago that I’d be rocking out to a three-month long music tournament with dozens of people, I would have been shocked and awed.

Thank you to Lindsay for preparing today’s Grooveshark playlist, where you can find all of the songs except for “How do you like me now?”  Vote by commenting below before 8pm EST on Thursday, July 29.

(I’m hijacking Janos’s draft to give this birthday gift. Behold the future of Living The Dream Music Tournaments- the embedded playlist. Happy 29th dude. -Guillermo)

Round of 128 Division G Results

Steve Miller shakes peach trees and the competition

A lot of close match-ups but no upsets here.  The blow-out for the division proves the re-seeding is a good predictor of victory: #1 seed “The Joker” by the Steve Miller Band defeats #8 seed “Forgiven” by Alanis Morisette by 66.1 points, 184.45 to 118.30.

Round of 128: Division F Results

Louis Armstrong's dreams of the Round of 64 come true

3 out of 4 match-ups in Division F were pretty close throughout voting, but alas, there were no upsets…no upsets within the seeds anyway.  I would certainly consider Kelly Clarkson defeating Led Zeppelin as a major upset (even if I helped cause it…whoops!).  The only consolation here is that this was the closest match-up of the division.  Clarkson won by only 3.6 points.  Louis Armstrong’s A Kiss to Build a Dream On made short work of 2HB, winning by 46.2 points.  This doesn’t come as a total surprise since AKTBADO was the 7th highest average score in the last round, however it does seem to be losing some momentum.  AKTBADO averaged 7.16 this time, versus 7.74 last time… Continue reading

Round of 128: Division E Results

What a great set of match-ups- three of these went down to the final voters.  Though #1 “Somebody to Love” (Queen) started a little slow, it eventually rained a hailstorm of 9s  and 10s on #8 “Funky Kingston” (Toots and the Maytals), winning 197.2-140.8.  Toots, and all of reggae, I believe, is eliminated.  Somebody to Love has the highest score of the day by far, and is the favorite to take Division E.

There was not a ton of love for either of these songs, but #5 “Motorway to Roswell” (Pixies) reclaimed the lead late in the game, prevailing over #4 “Classic Gas” (Mason Williams), 149.2-146.7.

In an earlier draft of this post I referred to Jason Mraz’s blow-out loss, but #7 “I’m Yours” came roaring back, falling just short to #2 Jumpin’ Jack Flash (Rolling Stones), 168.6-160.1.

In another see-saw battle, #3 “39” (Queen), which we now know is sung by Brian May and about a space adventure gone awry, blew a sizable lead against #6 “Trigger Finger Itch” (Midnight Spin), a song about a bank robbery gone awry.  Midnight Spin took the narrow win, 178.9-172.1.    There will be no Queen v. Queen barn-burner in this tournament.

Jumpin’ Jack Flash and Trigger Finger Itch both make the Wall of 10s courtesy of Mike and Benji (self-call).  Somebody to Love makes the wall thanks to Progenitor, Janos and Lucky Two Thumbs.
