Podcast with Martin Ford

Automation is coming fast.  Are our political and economic institutions prepared for the upheaval it will bring?  For Living the Dream Podcast guest Martin Ford, the answer is a resounding “no.”   Martin’s 2009 book, The Lights in the Tunnel, is a clarion call to prepare for an automated future in which tradition free-market capitalism simply may not work.

In this podcast, Martin and I ponder what type of jobs will be lost in the coming years, whether any locale or industry is safe, and what we can do to plan ahead.

Unfortunately, the answer we agree on, expanding the social safety net, is completely out of vogue with the narrow-minded policy makers who fester in the Beltway.

Take a listen as we discuss one of the most important and intellectually provocative topics of our time.

Podcast: An Idiot’s Guide to Your Teeth with Dr. Sippy and Dr. Dana

Dr. Sippy and I at his first dental office.

Let’s be real- you probably don’t know very much about your teeth.  We get trained from a young age to brush twice a day and floss, and hopefully most of you do.

However,  access to dental care in many young professional fields and graduate schools can be erratic, and issues may arise.  What does that weird sensation when you drink something cold mean? How do you handle issues with molars?  What’s the solution to tooth pain if you don’t have dental care? And most importantly, what kind of candy is the worst for your teeth?

To address these issues and more, LivingtheDream.org is having its first Idiot’s Guide to Your Teeth.  Our special guests are Dr. Sippy Gulati and Dr. Dana Kapp.   It’s an informative and entertaining session that we’d like to do again, so if you have any questions you’d like us to ask next time, email them to LTDdotorg@gmail.com.

For those who want to more about dental care for young children, check out an interview Dana did with a local news channel.

Second Round Awards!!

Hopefully you can enjoy your award in peace.

After two intense rounds of music, it’s time to take a step back and thank you, the voters, for making all of this possible.

Traditionally, we take time between the big rounds to recognize voters for their unique voting styles. Aiko has crunched the numbers for the Round of 128, but since she has fled into nature for the weekend, I’ll be posting the results. And now….[drumroll]…. Continue reading

Round of 128: Division P Results

domination dance

Well, gosh darn, a close race to the finish!  The one time I decide to get a head start on my results post, 3 matchups are within 5 points at 7 pm.

Unsurprisingly, despite a dose of haterism, the high-score-until-Adrock’s-last-minute-vote-and-now-2nd-highest-score and biggest lead goes to the #1 seeded Thom Yorke and band with “Fake Plastic Trees” defeating “Flash Light” 118.1 to 102.21.  I would have expected FPT to have Final 4 potential, but that 6.22 average is making me have my doubts.  Continue reading

Well, whaddya know – we’re reaching the end of the Round of 128.  I’m still trying to catch up on what’s happened in this round, as I’ve spent the better part of the last couple weeks at bluegrass festivals (and recovering from/preparing for them).  But let’s end this round strong!  You’ve got until 8 pm EDT on Thursday, July 28th to make a difference.
