Best Covers of All-Time: Round of 32

stripesWelcome to the Round of 32! From here things will move pretty quickly.  The whole round will take about a week, and then we’ll be in the Sweet 16.  Listen to today’s match-ups at the bottom of this playlist, see the brackets here, and vote by commenting below before 11:59pm on Wednesday.  Enjoy!

#3 We Can Work It Out (Stevie Wonder) vs. #6 Jolene (White Stripes)

#2 Mr. Tamburine Man (Byrds) vs. #7 Everlasting Love (U2).  The winner of these first two match-ups will play each other in the Sweet 16.  All did well last round, but the Byrds looked the sharpest.   Their version is the only one of these four that was a bigger hit than the original song.  Continue reading

Best Covers of All-Time: Round of 64, Day 10

Strummer mural on 7th and A.

Strummer mural on 7th and A.

The Round of 64 ends in style tonight with a tournament titans like Jeff Buckley.  We didn’t allow Hallelujah in last time because the song was too closely associated with him. It turns out he didn’t even discover Leonard Cohen’s original, but a John Cale cover.  Cale, the Scottie Pippen of the Velvet Underground, for his part, saw Cohen perform it live and ask for the lyrics.  Cohen sent him innumerable pages of poetry that Cale condensed to the version we’ll be hearing today. Listen to all of Day 10’s songs here (at bottom of playlist) and vote by commenting below before 11:59pm on Thursday.    You can check out the evolving tournament bracket and our results so far.

#1 Hallelujah (Jeff Buckley) vs. #16 I Want You Back (Lake Street Dive)

#4 Killing Me Softly (Fugees) vs. #13 Don’t Do It (The Band).  The Fugees cover Roberta Flack’s hit from the 70s, and The Band covers Marvin Gaye’s hit from the 60s.

#5 Redemption Song (Johnny Cash and Joe Strummer) vs. #12 Police and Thieves (Clash). Two Joe Strummer songs against each other? That’s my bracketing mistake, although Joe’s fans could take satisfaction in one guaranteed advance to the Round of 32.

#3 With a Little Help From My Friends (Joe Cocker) vs. #14 Johnny B. Goode/Roadrunner (Sex Pistols).  Our defending cover champion fends off a truly ridiculous Pistols cover of Chuck Berry and the Modern Lovers.

Best Covers of All-Time: Round of 64, Day 9

By Sebastian Wahl...

By Sebastian Wahl

A couple serious contenders in the mix today.  You can listen to them at the bottom of this playlist and vote by commenting below by Wednesday at 11:59pm.

#1 All Along the Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix) vs. #16 It’s All Over Now Baby Blue (Van Morrison).  All Along the Watchtower was the posterchild for our rule a few years ago that no covers were allowed if they were better known than the original.  Dylan himself changed the way he played this song live after hearing Jimi’s version (which came out the same year, btw.) Let’s see if Van the Man can put up any resistance in HIS Bob Dylan cover. Continue reading

Best Covers of All-Time: Round of 64, Day 4

janis_joplin_by_ed_lloyd-d5wo6cpWelcome to Ladies Night.  This tournament has more gender diversity than past ones, but it’s still not close to parity.  That said, I’d venture that nearly half of the favorites to actually win the tournament are female vocalists, and a few of them are leading the Day 4 brigade.  Listen at the bottom of the playlist here except America and vote by commenting below before 11:59pm  on Sunday night.  See you later, I’m out to protest the NYPD.

#1 Me and Bobby McGee (Janis Joplin) vs. Don’t You Want Me (Bahamas).  While everyone associates this song with Janis, it’s actually a Kris Kristofferson cover.

#2 Tide is High (Blondie) vs. #15  I Found a Reason (Cat Power).  Blondie’s catchy tune is pretty damn ambitious when you hear the Paragons reggae classic.  (From an album called “On the Beach”!)   Cat Power got love last round, let’s see if she can keep up the momentum. Continue reading

Best Covers of All-Time: Round of 64, Day 3

eric_garnerI’m posting right after the Eric Garner decision came down.  It’s a somber mood here in New York.  Music is appropriate for all occasions, but I’ll limit comments on these fine songs tonight.   You can listen to the bottom of the playlist here (except Twist and Shout) and vote by commenting below before 11:59pm on Friday.

#1 Hurt (Johnny Cash) vs. #16 You’ll Be a Woman Soon (Urge Overkill).  We didn’t include Johnny last time because even Reznor calls this “a Johnny Cash song now.”

#4 Mack the Knife (Bobby Darin) vs. #13 I Fought the Law (Clash).  Says it all.

#2 Twist and Shout (Beatles) vs. #15 Blitzkrieg Bop (Yo La Tengo).  The Beatles were a great cover band, and this one made is onto their first album.

#8 Slippery People (Staple Singers) vs. #9 Like a Rollin’ Stone (Rolling Stones).  Slippery People is a Talking Heads classic, while the Stones have fun with Dylan. Both of them got the name from Muddy Waters.

#7  Walk This Way (Run-DMC) vs. #10 Higher Ground (Red Hot Chili Peppers).  A nice pair of cross-racial covers.

Best Covers of All-Time: Round of 64, Day 2

Queen had three semi-final appearances, two finals and one championship from 2010-2012.

Queen had three semi-final appearances, two finals and one championship from 2010-2012.

Freddie Mercury is back!  Music tournament veterans know that from 2010-2012, no artist dominated our music tournament landscape like Queen.  One of Freddie’s solo numbers headlines a list that includes the Stevie Wonder and Radiohead.  You can listen at the bottom of this playlist and vote by commenting below before 11:59pm on Thursday.

#4 The Great Pretender (Freddie Mercury) vs. #13 Mary Don’t You Weep (Bruce Springsteen and Seeger Session Band).   Continue reading

Police and Thieves (Clash) def. Go Tell It On the Mountain (Wailers), 43.4-39.6. The Clash follow the Boss and the Beach Boys in delivering two songs to the Round of 64.

Johnny B. Goode/Roadrunner (Sex Pistols) def. Pink Houses (Avail), 39.8-30.5.

The Orchids (Califone) def. Darling Nikki (Foo Fighters), 29.4-24.4.  Definitely the most obscure song in the Round of 64, Dem Adam’s nomination topples the Foo Fighters as Prince smiles.

Best Cover Song of All-Time: Round of 64

No caption needed.

No caption needed.

Welcome to the Round of 64!  I like pretty much every song left in the tournament, and I hope you do too.  Listen to Day 6 matchups at the bottom of this playlist (except for R. Kelly), and vote in the comment section below by 11:59pm on Wednesday.

#7 A Change Gonna Come (R. Kelly) vs. #10 Just My Imagination (Rolling Stones).  I have a 2000-word story about how this song was the climax of my Bonnaroo 2013 experience that I’ll post here sometime.  R. Kelly mesmerizes in this cover, a song that he obviously has an affinity for- it was the last song before his performance earlier in the evening.  Meanwhile, the Stones rock this Temptations cover on their last truly great album, Some Girls.

#8  Lady is a Tramp (Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett) vs. #9 I Know You Rider (Grateful Dead).  The Gaga/Tony collaborative album won stellar reviews when it was released last year, and this Frank Sinatra cover seemed like an appropriate representative.  The Dead had literally dozens of covers in their repertoire.  I asked LTD voter and Grateful Dead expert Adam Sofe for a nominee, and he offered this traditional folk song, which has been recorded since at least the 1930s, most famously by Joan Baez. Best Cover of All-Time, Day 5: The End of the Play-in Round

yesterdayThank you to all participants for your nominations and votes, especially during this pre-lim round.  It ends today on a mellow note; you might call it the “Saturday Hangover Edition.”  As always, listen to the tunes here and vote by commenting before 11:59pm on Monday.

Play-in:  You Can Have It All (Yo La Tengo) vs. Stay Awhile (She and Him). Yo La Tengo takes a funky George McCrae song and tenderizes it, while Zooey Deschanel takes a stab at an old Dusty Springfield standard.

Play-in:  I Want You Back (Lake Street Dive) vs. Baby I Need Your Lovin’ (Johnny Rivers).  The battle of Motown covers! Both artists slow things down a bit here, all the better to let the famous music factory’s songwriting shine through. Also, I learned the lyric is “now that I see you in his arms,” not “now that I see you anytime.”

Play-in: Yesterday (Ray Charles) vs. Pursuit of Happiness (Lissie). Yesterday is by some metrics the most covered song of all-time, so it felt appropriate to have a representative, and who better than Ray?  Lissie’s cover of Kid Cudi and MGMT has been loved by all who heard it, according to former music tournament co-chair Guillermo, who should be getting his voters into listening shape soon!

Play-in: Don’t You Want Me (Bahamas) vs. Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go (Soft Cell).  Don’t take covers too seriously if you can’t even take the originals too seriously!  This match-up gets weird, and it’s really a contest to see who will get taken down by Janis Joplin next round.

Play-in: It’s All Over Now Baby Blue (Them) vs. Satisfaction (Devo).  Them features a young Van Morrison against what my roommate Jake calls a properly angsty version of Satisfaction. (It was never believable that Mick Jagger was having trouble on this front.)

YOU MADE IT!  By Monday we’ll be down to 64 songs.

Best Cover of All-Time: Day 1, 2 and 3 Results

grapevineLet the eliminations begin!  Most of these matches were pretty close, but a few standouts bear mentioning. You can also look at the full, updated results at the bracket manager.

I Heard It Through the Grapevine (CCR) averaged nearly 8 points a voter en route to victory.  I originally had it seeded higher, but figured people might sour on such a long song. I was totally mistaken- it became the first song to make the Wall of 10s, with 10s from Tim, Dr. J and Cristina.

Honorable mention to Don’t Do It (Band) and I Fought the Law (Clash), which also averaged over 8 points/voter, and Across the Universe (Fiona Apple) for averaging more than 7 points/voter, which is usually enough to make a deep run.   We’ll see!

Day 1

Where Did You Sleep Last Night (Nirvana) def. I Believe in Miracles (Eddie Vedder), 40.4-34.2.

Head On (Pixies) def. Mr. Grieves (TV on the Radio), 45.2-38.8.

Mary Don’t You Weep (Bruce Springsteen) def. The Boxer (Mumford and Sons), 45-42.5.

Across the Universe (Fiona Apple) def. Grow Old With Me (Postal Service), 51.9-40.5.

Atlantic City (The Band) def. Fist City (Little Willies), 46.9-43.9. Continue reading
