Round of 64: Division K and L Semi-Finals

Unlike some of our other divisions, L and K enter the Round of 64 without runaway favorites.

The most dramatic story in Division K is “Landslide”, the only song in this tournament not nominated by one of us “People.”  It actually received an automatic bye after a scoring error mistakenly eliminated it from the Living the Dream Tournament.   If you aren’t familiar with America, the band, their big hit is “A Horse with No Name,” which I thought was a Neil Young song.  “Sister Golden Hair” was also a #1 hit.

In Division L, Flo and the Machine have been looking strong, but CCR, an always dangerous tournament foe, i s lurking…around the bend.  Otis gives his second of three contenders a whirl, and Butch Walker temporarily replaces Semisonic as the Cinderella story of the tournament.  Let’s see how these Division semi-finals shake out. Round of 64: Division I and J Semi-Finals

CCCHHHAARRRRGGGEEE!!!

OK Go prepare for battle (ze goggles do nothing)

Taking a gander at the numbers, the division I and J semi-finals matchups are looking like we will have a few blowouts and a few close calls.  First off, Midnight Train to Georgia is up again.  With an average score of 8.12 in the last round, this song had the highest score of the entire round.  Similarly, You are the Best Thing had a healthy 7.56, the 6th highest of the last round.  The matchup to watch today has got to be Frankie Valli vs The Faces.  Only 0.2 points separated their average scores and with fluctuations in daily voters, this could be anybody’s game. Round of 64: Division G/H Semi-Final Results

Folks, this will have to be a  short post, because I’m under the gun at work until I leave to watch Planet of the Apes. Opening night, what!?  Seriously, I’ve always loved this concept, both the original movie and the books were always a good mix of action and introspection.

On to our results. The listening party, filled with irregular voters, had a seismic impact on a couple of matches.

Division G

#4 I’d Rather Go Blind (Etta James) def. #1 The Joker (Steve Miller Band), 185.55-172.4.   Buoyed by “10s” from Tim, Jen and Ilya, Etta James topped the top-seeded Steve Miller Band.  Will it be able to replicate the success without the support of the ‘regular’ voters, though? Continue reading

How Civically Literate Are You?

Sorry guys- missed your question

In the trivia section, a fun little quiz my sister forwarded to me- the Intercollegiate Studies Institute Civic Literacy Exam. It’s sorta like a 33 question multiple choice AP US History test, except in the end you get to see % of citizens that got each question right as well as % of politicians that got it right.

I’ll be honest with my score- I got a 29 out of 33, good for an 88%. Missed questions on:

-Electoral College
-Roosevelt’s response to the Supreme Court ruling on the New Deal
-the issue of the Lincoln-Douglas debates
-the quote “of the people, by the people, for the people.”

The lawyers among you may scoff that I missed these questions, but in my defense I did get a perfect on the macroeconomic questions. So at least I learned something in school…but seriously, take this test, it’s kinda fun.

Division E & F Semi-Final Results

Well, the votes are in, the people have spoken, and the message to take away from the Round E and F Semi-Finals is loud and clear: out with the new, in with the old. Every one of our winners was of a considerably older vintage than its respective opponent.

This is how Freddie Mercury responded when he was asked what he thought of his Division E Finals opponent, the Rolling Stones.

As expected, Queen’s live version of Somebody to Love showed Motorway to Rosswell the door. For a while it looked like Somebody to Love was going to set the record for the highest average score for a single round, with the mean vote lingering around 8.5. That was before Aiko and her Army of Player-Haters came along and brought the average back down to Earth, leaving it at 7.67. The final score was 207.2-161.4: a very healthy margin of victory, but not enough to put it at the very top of our contenders list. Somebody to Love did garner two tens, however, earning it a third trip to the Wall of 10s.

Round of 64: Division C & D Results

Well, a slow-pitch softball tournament distracted me from the ol’ music tournament for a bit, but I am now prepared to present the scores and announce the division finalists.  Ready?

Actually, the match-ups were impressively not close.  Higher & Higher destroyed People C’mon 178.3 to 140.4.  Delta Spirit never had much of a chance, but as soon as Team Maureen cast their votes, it was game over. Continue reading

Stafford Subsidy Eliminated- President and Congress Slam Living the Dream

The new debt ceiling bill is unpalatable to many, but a provision that snuck in without much fanfare is killer to graduate students all over the country.

Beginning in July of 2012, Stafford loans will begin accruing interest while students are still in schools, ending a long-time federal subsidy.   The government is expected to save a whopping $8 billion over five years by enacting this new policy.

Here are some reasons why that is a foolish and obscene idea: Continue reading

Division A & B Semi-Final Results

aka trying to avoid producing something like this

My favorite round is the Round of 64 because that’s when I have fun with Microsoft Paint and make these cool images that have the artists paired up against each other in one image. However, you guys are making this INCREDIBLY difficult to draft up because three different matches are only separated by 2.5 points with 77 minutes to vote, and I don’t want to make pictures that are wrong. So, to the Greenbelt Library tonight. Oh the burden we carry as authors- honestly though, this Round is when it gets really fun. Let’s do it. Continue reading
