PCT II: Round of 128, Day 10 Results

Taking out Rod Stewart? Just another day at the office for the Shins.

Thank you, voters, for voting more or less in rough alphabetical order.  Seriously, it makes tabulating scores on our spreadsheet much easier.  To Adrock, Amanda, AnnaZ, Aiko, and Adam S. (who starts work at 7am EST), the morning hours are yours.  Anyway, on to tonight’s results, which were down to the wire in three out of the four match-ups.

Interstate Love Song (Stone Temple Pilots) def. Statement of Vindication (Bikini Kill),  103.8-86.2 .  Even when the Bikini Kill entry was changed from an article about community college to an actual song, STP cruised controlled to victory, albeit without an impressive average. Continue reading

PCT II: Round of 128, Day 9 Results

Guess who’s back?

Despite early concerns that Coldplay was too strong to compete, Dave Matthews Band pulls the upset over the 2009 Grammy Best Song of the Year and proves that after 15  years of reactive dissonance, the People have come around on DMB. #41 over Viva La Vida, 125.2-116.5.

Biggest victory goes to “1901”– Placebo never got started, and falls to Phoenix 128.8-107.9.

Earth, Wind, and Fire gets the win, but bears some criticism of ubiquity in the process. Victory goes to “September,” which does good work of Damien Jurado’s “Throwing Your Voice” 122.97-110.3.

Last and least, if the early fights were prime time, this last fight was the People’s equivalent of trying to find something to watch at 1:00 AM in the days before movie channels. Someone had to win this, and it ended up being “For Reverend Green” over Nas’s “2nd Childhood,” 86.1-81.5. 4.5 average won’t cut it in the next round, so we’ll see if Animal Collective picks up some points on its next go around.

92 songs still alive!

Daily Nos: The Democratic Convention in Pictures Redux (Convention Post #9)

The photos in the last post were taken by me. These photos, as indicated, were taken by top-notch political photographer Jon Reznick.

Looking pensive. Perhaps Joe Biden was rambling.

Daily Nos: The Democratic Convention in Pictures (Convention Post #8)

With my fave GQ writer, Marin Cogan.

On Friday I had the hardest drive of my life making it from Charlotte to New York on limited sleep.   Then I spent the weekend in Boston for rock violin legend Jenny Bress’s wedding.  In the next four days I have to go back to work, write an article for City & State, prepare a job creation report, host the Peoples Choice Tournament, and finish a massive law review article.  In short, colorful recaps of the Democratic Convention, at least in literary form, will have to wait.   Nothing is holding back the photos, however, which I’m posting here.

If I ever release a hip-hop album (unlikely), this is a candidate for the cover. With Yetta Kurland.

Daily Nos: Speaker Quinn and Senator Gillibrand look ahead (Convention post #7)

A view from the New York delegation’s seats, where I enjoyed the soothing sounds of James Taylor.

Charlotte may have been a circus, a hot stew of politics, punditry and freeze booze, but some productive work did get done.  I broke two stories from the Convention for City & State, both about New York political stars looking to expand their national brands.  The first was about an afternoon event I attended featuring New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who looks to build a national profile as she runs for Mayor.  The second is about Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s splashy visit to the Iowa delegation, and important constituency to impress, depending on your ambitions.

I also made a cameo in Esquire, part of a night that was not nearly as bad as advertised.

People’s Choice Tournament: Week 2 Recap, Math Edition

Alright, we are 25% done with the tournament and 50% done with the first round! Dork alert, here comes some math: In any given tournament of 2^x rounds, where x>1, the number of matches in any given round will be equal to the number of matches remaining minus 1. For example, if it was an 8 song tournament, 8=2^3, so you’ve got 3 rounds. There are 4 matches in the first round, which is equal to the matches in the consequent rounds minus 1 (2 matches in the Final Four + 1 Championship=3. 4-3=1.) This may seem simple, but whatever.

Still in contention for the Marathon Voter award are Continue reading

PCT II: Round of 128, Day 8 Results

So that’s what Ron Weasley does these days.

Surprise here was from Two Door Cinema Club, whose “What You Know” runs circles around Kanye West’s “Lost In The World”- the Irish trio takes it 126.35- 99.

Also with a comfortable gap was old timer John Prine- “Long Monday” over the Wood Brothers’ “When I Was Young,” 118.75-110.1.

Neko Case had a slim lead this morning, but late votes went the way of The Walkmen. “Heaven” eliminates “Prison Girls” 119.4-116.45.

Last but not least, in our closest match to date yet, the Stone Roses squander a 14 point lead and fall to Oasis’s “Champagne Supernova” in late votes by (I kid you not) 122.15-122. Yes, that close- can’t complain if you didn’t vote, and that’s the way the tournament crumbles.

Tune in later this weekend for a recap of the week. We’re halfway through the Round of 128, which mathematically means 25% of the way through the total match-ups. Yeah, math!
