Placebo
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the second half of the Round of 128. We sincerely hope you’ve enjoyed the 64 nominated songs that have competed so far, of all genres, from the playlists of all corners of our audience. I’m pretty pumped about these match-ups to kick us off, and think our random selection lent us some pretty even pairings for Day 9. Playlist is here, and votes are due by Tuesday, September 11th at 8:00 PM. Eastern Standard Time (hey Aiko.) Best of luck to all songs.
Viva La Vida (Coldplay) vs. #41 (Dave Matthews Band)
Every You Every Me (Placebo) vs. 1901 (Phoenix)
Throwing Your Voice (Damien Jurado) vs. September (Earth, Wind, & Fire)
2nd Childhood (Nas) vs. For Reverend Green (Animal Collective)
Viva La Vida (Coldplay) vs. #41 (Dave Matthews Band)-7.5/6
Every You Every Me (Placebo) vs. 1901 (Phoenix)-7/6
Throwing Your Voice (Damien Jurado) vs. September (Earth, Wind, & Fire)-6/6.67
Not one song I’d turn off the radio in the first 3 matchups.
2nd Childhood (Nas) vs. For Reverend Green (Animal Collective)-1/3
What a terrible matchup. I can’t believe Nas is still alive.
Viva La Vida (Coldplay) vs. #41 (Dave Matthews Band) 9.5 – 6 …. I love coldplay, and this song is one of my favorites. I heard them live in Hershey Park, of all places, a couple of years ago, and the crowd lost it when they played this song. I figured this would have been nixed by the “too popular” rule – didn’t it win the grammy for best song of the year just a couple of years ago?
Every You Every Me (Placebo) vs. 1901 (Phoenix) 5.5 – 6.5
Throwing Your Voice (Damien Jurado) vs. September (Earth, Wind, & Fire) 5 – 7
2nd Childhood (Nas) vs. For Reverend Green (Animal Collective) 2 – 3.5 Nas? I think I have next on varsity.
Admittedly I’ve never heard this song before but I’m not the best with popular music/Coldplay. I think we’ll be ok on this.
Vida La Vida (Coldplay) 2
41 (Dave Matthew’s Band) 3
Every You Every Me (Placebo) 4
1901 (Phoenix) 5.5
Throwing Your Voice (Damien Jurado) 7
September (Earth, Wind, & Fire) 5
I’m feeling this Damien Jurado song this morning.
2nd Childhood (Nas) 5
Reverend Green (Animal Collective) 4
Viva La Vida (Coldplay) vs. [5]
#41 (Dave Matthews Band) [8]
– I like some anthemic pop tunes. I like some Coldplay. I don’t especially like this Coldplay song.
– Dave Matthews Band is one of those bands that I never think that I’m into and never turn on myself, but always enjoy when it’s on.
Every You Every Me (Placebo) vs. [1]
1901 (Phoenix) [8]
– Placebo made me want to turn them off. Whiny voice, repetitive lyrics. ugh!
Throwing Your Voice (Damien Jurado) vs. [5]
September (Earth, Wind, & Fire) [6.5]
– Meh! to both, but nostalgia easily kicks Mr. Jurado’s butt.
2nd Childhood (Nas) vs. [6]
For Reverend Green (Animal Collective) [4]
– Nas has great flow, fun beats, and more. I just don’t find hip hop that sort of music that allows me not to pay attention to it while reading/working, which is when I’m mostly listening. But Animal Collective is –with a few exceptions– a bit too weird for me.
Viva La Vida (Coldplay) vs. #41 (Dave Matthews Band) = 7 to 6
Every You Every Me (Placebo) vs. 1901 (Phoenix) = 5 to 9
Throwing Your Voice (Damien Jurado) vs. September (Earth, Wind, & Fire) = 6.5 to 9.5
2nd Childhood (Nas) vs. For Reverend Green (Animal Collective) = 6.5 to 3.5
Half man half amazing.
Scores are me, my friend Kara.
Vida La Vida (Coldplay) 8.9, 7
41 (Dave Matthew’s Band) 5, 9
Every You Every Me (Placebo) 3, 4 (I liked the music part, but the vocals killed it for me.)
1901 (Phoenix) 7, 6
Throwing Your Voice (Damien Jurado) 5, 2
September (Earth, Wind, & Fire) 7, 6
2nd Childhood (Nas) 3, 2
Reverend Green (Animal Collective) 4, 2
Viva La Vida (Coldplay) vs. #41 (Dave Matthews Band): 7.5 : 7.8
Interesting. I don’t like either of these artists very much, but these are both very solid songs.
Every You Every Me (Placebo) vs. 1901 (Phoenix): 6.7 : 7.3
Throwing Your Voice (Damien Jurado) vs. September (Earth, Wind, & Fire): 6.2 : 7
2nd Childhood (Nas) vs. For Reverend Green (Animal Collective): 6 : 8.5
Animal Collective is weird, but I’m digging it. Not my favorite Nas.
Viva La Vida (Coldplay): 5.5
#41 (Dave Matthews Band): 8.1
DMB by a mile. Songs that I associate with very specific moments of my life always get a bump or hit based on whether it was good or bad. I remember Crash in my CD player and turning off of the I-495-I-270 spur onto River Road as this song was blasting, on my way to the pool at Holton Arms to coach Special Olympics Swimming. Everything was nice and simple and promising back after we survived Y2K and months before 9/11- really just a great time to graduate high school. We’ll see on staying power, but this is good for today. Coldplay- can’t get into.
Every You Every Me (Placebo): 6.4
1901 (Phoenix): 7.5
These are both road trip mix songs. The not angry one more fun wins this match.
Throwing Your Voice (Damien Jurado) 7.6
September (Earth, Wind, & Fire) 7.2
LIKE this Jurado song, never heard before. Did not think I’d vote this way. Mood.
2nd Childhood (Nas) 6
For Reverend Green (Animal Collective) 6.5
Vida La Vida (Coldplay) 7.5
41 (Dave Matthew’s Band) 7
Every You Every Me (Placebo) 9
1901 (Phoenix) 8.5
Argh. Tough for me: both hugely nostalgic but from very different parts of my life.
Throwing Your Voice (Damien Jurado) 6
September (Earth, Wind, & Fire) 5
Throwing started really nicely for me but I can’t help feeling that it lacked a layer. September always feels like cheesy wedding music to me and I couldn’t shake that when listening to it.
2nd Childhood (Nas) 3
Reverend Green (Animal Collective) 5
Viva La Vida (Coldplay) vs. #41 (Dave Matthews Band) 5.0 vs 6.0
Every You Every Me (Placebo) vs. 1901 (Phoenix) 4.5 vs 3.5
Throwing Your Voice (Damien Jurado) vs. September (Earth, Wind, & Fire) 6.0 vs 6.5
2nd Childhood (Nas) vs. For Reverend Green (Animal Collective) 3.0 vs 2.0
Viva La Vida (Coldplay) vs. #41 (Dave Matthews Band) 5.0 vs 6.5 Not a big fan but DMB is definitely the better track here.
Every You Every Me (Placebo) vs. 1901 (Phoenix) 5.0 vs 4.0
Throwing Your Voice (Damien Jurado) vs. September (Earth, Wind, & Fire) 5.0 vs 6.5. Somebody I know but they were never a big fave; at least no this cut.
2nd Childhood (Nas) vs. For Reverend Green (Animal Collective) 3.0 vs 2.0 Words can not describe.
Viva La Vida (Coldplay) 5
vs. #41 (Dave Matthews Band) 4
Every You Every Me (Placebo) 4 It’s like the singer is using an autotune-like machine that makes him sound extra nasally. Is there such a thing as nasal-tune?
vs. 1901 (Phoenix) 6
Throwing Your Voice (Damien Jurado) 6 vs.
September (Earth, Wind, & Fire) 7
2nd Childhood (Nas) vs. 4
For Reverend Green (Animal Collective) 7
Viva La Vida (Coldplay) – 5.6
#41 (Dave Matthews Band) – 7.8
Every You Every Me (Placebo) – 10
1901 (Phoenix) – 6
Throwing Your Voice (Damien Jurado) – 6.5
September (Earth, Wind, & Fire) – 5.6
2nd Childhood (Nas) – 8
For Reverend Green (Animal Collective) – 5.6
Time to get back to voting!
Viva La Vida (Coldplay) 4.5
#41 (Dave Matthews Band) 3
This matchup was never going to get good scores from me. Pretty much my 2 most loathed bands of the last 15 years. Oh well.
Every You Every Me (Placebo) 4
1901 (Phoenix) 6.5
Placebo was sort of meh, but Phoenix was definitely cool. Felt a little REM-ish to me, but i might be nuts. Definitely enjoyed it.
Throwing Your Voice (Damien Jurado) 5
September (Earth, Wind, & Fire) 7
Ahh Earth, Wind & Fire… great choice, good boost for the afternoon.
2nd Childhood (Nas) 5.5
For Reverend Green (Animal Collective) 5.5
Can’t pick a winner. Not bad, just not quite doing it for me.
Vida La Vida (Coldplay) 8.5
41 (Dave Matthew’s Band) 9
Every You Every Me (Placebo) 6.8
1901 (Phoenix) 7
Throwing Your Voice (Damien Jurado) 7.5
September (Earth, Wind, & Fire) 8
2nd Childhood (Nas) 3.5
Reverend Green (Animal Collective) 3
Viva La Vida (Coldplay) – 5.5
#41 (Dave Matthews Band) – 7
i never really got this coldplay song. i can’t say i like the dmb institution, but they’ve made a lot of good music, especially the UTTAD & crash era. it got a bit too smooth-jazzy after a while though.
Every You Every Me (Placebo) – 7
1901 (Phoenix) – 8
i expected to be a stronger supporter of placebo, but phoenix made me happy.
Throwing Your Voice (Damien Jurado) – 7
September (Earth, Wind, & Fire) – 5
i know september is a classic but i never particularly cared for it
2nd Childhood (Nas) – 3
For Reverend Green (Animal Collective) – 6.5
animal collective tends not to be very accessible, but i was feeling this one.
Viva La Vida (Coldplay) — 4
#41 (Dave Matthews Band) — 9
Every You Every Me (Placebo) –9
1901 (Phoenix) — 8.5
Throwing Your Voice (Damien Jurado) — 6
September (Earth, Wind, & Fire) — 6
meh.
2nd Childhood (Nas) — 5
For Reverend Green (Animal Collective) — 3
nas is back(ish?); ac has never really been here
picks coming shortly…
Vida La Vida (Coldplay) 6
41 (Dave Matthew’s Band) 7
Every You Every Me (Placebo) 6
1901 (Phoenix) 8
Did not know Placebo was a real band. I thought they were invented for the VELVET GOLDMINE to cover T.Rex’s “20th Century Boy.”
Throwing Your Voice (Damien Jurado) 5
September (Earth, Wind, & Fire) 4.5
Unfortunately I don’t hear a song anymore when I listen to September. Its ubiquity has turned it into a jingle.
2nd Childhood (Nas) 6
Reverend Green (Animal Collective) 7.5
