PCT II: Round of 64, Day 3 Results

Young Johnny channeling some PCT confidence

One upset and three comfortable wins. After looking very strong in the initial survey of competitors, Coldplay takes an early exit as “Sequestered In Memphis” by Hold Steady knocks off “Til Kingdom Come,” 85.3-83.95.

“Pulling On A Line” wins comfortably over “Make It Better,” 92.7-82.

The old school takes the last two pretty easily- Solomon Burke’s “Cry To Me” pulls away in late votes and knocks off Rakim’s “When I B On Tha Mic,” 94.4-85.

High score goes to “Get Rhythm”– the Man In Black doesn’t lose a step in eliminating Deep Dark Woods’ “All The Money I Had Is Gone” 100.3-94.15. Tough pull for DDW, who would have beat any of the first four songs- then again, we do score in juxtaposition so who knows.

PCT II: Round of 64, Day 2 Results

It was difficult to find a google image that wasn’t a gross teeth whitening ad.

Day 2 featured some great battles, and may be the first day of the tournament where every song averaged a “6” or higher.  But the story in this division continues to be “Killer Queen”, which posted the day’s high average of 7.7.   All of the other match-ups were down to the wire, so congrats to all nominators.

Pink Moon (Nick Drake) def. Backstreets (Bruce Springsteen), 82-81.5.   This one flipped on the second to last vote.  Bruce is down to his last song (41 Shots).

Stubborn Love (Lumineers) def. Anna Sun (Walk the Moon),  85-74.7.    Is it wrong to lump the Lumineers with Edward Sharpe and Monsters & Men?  There’s a specific sound permeating from these bands that is thriving in this tournament.

Killer Queen (Queen) def.   Never Go Back (Grace Potter and the Nocturnals), 85.4-70.7.

All These Things I’ve Done (Killers) def. The Last Living Rose (PJ Harvey), 75-68.2.    Killer Queen vs. the Killers next round.  Sounds rambunctious.

PCT II: Round of 64, Day 4

Two Door Cinema Club: likable-looking nerds with a weird name.

This is going to be a fun one for me, because I was in a foggy Democratic Convention haze when I voted on most of the songs below.   Whether it’s your first or second time hearing these songs this tournament, you can listen here (except for Man on Fire) and vote by commenting below before Midnight EST Friday.   I’m giving the bonus hours because I’m not tallying scores til Saturday anyway, and maybe some of you can have listening parties Friday night.

Man on Fire (Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes) vs. Go Tell the Congregation (Black Crowes)

Harvest Moon (Neil Young) vs. Tickle Me Pink (Johnny Flynn)

What You Know (Two Door Cinema Club) vs. Long Monday (John Prine)

Heaven (Walkmen) vs. Champagne Supernova (Oasis)

PCT II: Round of 64, Day 1 Results

Of Monsters And Men charge forth into the great unknown- aka The Round of 32

The results are in, and our first 4 songs progressing to the Round of 32 have been set. Numbers on voters were a bit low (no thanks to me, crazy week this week. Trying my best to work in voting time. Didn’t help that I left my headphones in my car accidentally on Monday AND Tuesday.) Let’s review.

Blistering ahead as the top score of the group was “Little Talks,” which handily defeats “Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City” 104.85-90.95. It averages a 7.49, about a 0.5 jump from the first round.

“Sunday” by Les Friction gained some traction the second time around, but not enough to overcome “Tightrope”- Janelle Monae takes it, 94.45-80.9.

At the top of the group, “Head Full Of Doubt/Road Full Of Promise” defeats “Salvador,” 98.1-83.05. And “New Direction” gains a bit from last round, defeating “Jump Blues” 100.8-88.2. The Round of 32 match between these two should be a good one.

And Then There Were…PCT II Round of 64: Day 1

Bobby Bland- not worried.

Whereas the first round of the music tournament tests our openness to the nominations, the second begins to test the staying power of the survivors. We’ll listen to the survivors advancing through the tournament- some may still score high, some may wear on us. Only time will tell, but it is certainly an exciting time in the PCTII. Playlist is here and votes are due by Tuesday, September 25 at 8:00 PM. As always, vote with your hearts and best of luck to all songs.

Salvador (Jamie T) vs. Head Full Of Doubt/Road Full of Promise (Avett Brothers)

New Direction (Black Lips) vs. Jump Blues (Frontier Brothers)

Sunday (Les Friction) vs. Tightrope (Janelle Monae)

Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City (Bobby Bland) vs. Little Talks (Of Monsters And Men)

Awards!

As you regulars know, the breaks between rounds offer me a nice opportunity to run numbers and do voter appreciation awards over the years. Without further ado…

Yeahhhhhh

Golden Marathon Voters: This list has been significantly culled since the last time around, and rightly so- it is a hard task in the hustle and bustle to make sure to always get your scores in. Congratulations to Salem, Amanda, Daddy-O, CJ Roomba, Dem Adam, and Natalie for having a perfect attendance record on voting- you are the ones driving the scores and for that we hope that some of your favorites are still in! Honorable mention to those that have scored higher than 50 match-ups: AnnaZ, Eileen, Janos, Joe, and MarkB.

I call Bright Heart Raccoon, that guy was the shit

Care Bear Award: This goes to the voter who gives

PCT II: Round of 128, Day 16 Results

Heyyyy life’s good.

“Magic Carpet Ride” sets a real contender looking standard with an average of 7.75 and a win over Chairlift, 93.3-68.55.

“Just Like Heaven” eases past “We OK,” 82-72.75.

Upset City #1 (I think): “Shine Blockas” over “Holland, 1945” 77.4-74.65.

Upset City #2 (I know): “Foundations” takes advantage of the fact that we are collectively tired of that Gotye song and overcomes, 74.81-73.

And with that, we are 50% done. Check out the next round at the bracket here.

PCT II: Round of 128, Day 15 Results

You’ve come a long way, boys

Haha- never thought I’d see the day, but it’s today. Hanson for the win! “Thinkin’ Bout Something” defeats “Four Night Rider” 92.55-84.8. And the band rightly shocked us all with a new and pretty solid song. Two thumbs up to these guys.

David Grey takes match-up #2, “Babylon” over “Sleeping Sickness” 92.85-85.15.

Match #3 was our closest of the round, but the Lumineers hold strong and overcome the Strokes- “Classy Girls” defeats “Macchu Picchu” 99.55-97.3. The Lumineers also sweep the Round of 128 of bands with multiple songs, going to 2-0.

Last but not least, the ode to smorgasbords grabs high score of the day. “Little Bit Of Everything” over “Fleeting Like The Days” 99.3-91.54.
