And Then There Were…PCT II Round of 64: Day 1

Bobby Bland- not worried.

Whereas the first round of the music tournament tests our openness to the nominations, the second begins to test the staying power of the survivors. We’ll listen to the survivors advancing through the tournament- some may still score high, some may wear on us. Only time will tell, but it is certainly an exciting time in the PCTII. Playlist is here and votes are due by Tuesday, September 25 at 8:00 PM. As always, vote with your hearts and best of luck to all songs.

About g-mo

The day I was born, Michael Jackson's Thriller album was at the top of the Billboard 200. I've been trying my best to live up to that expectation ever since.

Salvador (Jamie T) vs. Head Full Of Doubt/Road Full of Promise (Avett Brothers) 6 – 6

New Direction (Black Lips) vs. Jump Blues (Frontier Brothers) 6.5 – 7.5

Sunday (Les Friction) vs. Tightrope (Janelle Monae) 7 – 6.5

Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City (Bobby Bland) vs. Little Talks (Of Monsters And Men) 5 – 9

I must have heard Little Talks about 20 times on the radio since the first round. I like everything about it except for the title. The term “little talks” sounds like something a hypothetical old girlfriend would condescendingly say to me after I tried to have a meaningful conversation about our relationship. Like “I’m glad we had this little talk. Now, when are you going take out the garbage, make me dinner, and man-up for a change?” Hypothetical, I said!

Salvador (Jamie T) vs. Head Full Of Doubt/Road Full of Promise (Avett Brothers) = 6 to 6
such different songs, i can’t decide. sorry. the avett bros song is a better crafted song, however i like the vibe of the Jaime T song more.

New Direction (Black Lips) vs. Jump Blues (Frontier Brothers) = 6.5 to 7.5

Sunday (Les Friction) vs. Tightrope (Janelle Monae) = 4.5 to 6.5
Les Friction – like the string parts, but not the vocals unfortunately.

Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City (Bobby Bland) vs. Little Talks (Of Monsters And Men) = 7.5 to 5

I had thought that the use of the sample was more obscure, but it was not. I dunno, maybe its been used other places too.

  4. Margot says:

    Salvador – 6
Head Full of Doubt – 9.5

    Salvador (Jamie T) 5.5
vs. Head Full Of Doubt/Road Full of Promise (Avett Brothers) 6

New Direction (Black Lips) : 9.3
vs. Jump Blues (Frontier Brothers): 6.2

    Sunday (Les Friction) : 5.7
vs. Tightrope (Janelle Monae) : 8 (down a notch from round 1)

Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City (Bobby Bland) 5.8 It’s got soul, but so damn repetitive.
vs. Little Talks (Of Monsters And Men) : 8.3 This one’s growing on me.

  6. Salvador (Jamie T) vs. Head Full Of Doubt/Road Full of Promise (Avett Brothers) = 6:4

New Direction (Black Lips) vs. Jump Blues (Frontier Brothers) = 10:6
    – I’m not giving this a 10 because it’s my pick. It’s my pick because I believe it to be a 10.

Sunday (Les Friction) vs. Tightrope (Janelle Monae) = 3:4
    – Using Mr. Rafter’s Methodology… I had to give these songs sub-5 scores since they literally made me angry.

Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City (Bobby Bland) vs. Little Talks (Of Monsters And Men) = 7:4

vs. Head Full Of Doubt/Road Full of Promise (Avett Brothers) 7.5

    New Direction (Black Lips) 7
vs. Jump Blues (Frontier Brothers) 7.5
Tough one for me. Both solid; neither great. I liked the unpolished sound of Jump Blues slightly more though, I think.

    Sunday (Les Friction) 7
    vs. Tightrope (Janelle Monae) 6
I think I’ve switched preference from Round 1 here. Funny how a different point of comparison changes things. Sunday was working for me right now.
