LTD Music Tournament: Division M, Day 2

Pretty dope to be back at the while for tonight- we’ve got literally seven decades of music ahead of us.  As one of our competitor’s say, “tonight’s gonna be a good night.”  Listen to the songs at Grooveshark, and vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com before 9pm on Thursday.

Smooth Criminal (Michael Jackson) vs.  Under Pressure (Queen/David Bowie).  Can Michael out pop Freddie Mercury AND David Bowie?

A Quick One While He’s Away (Who) v. What I’d Say (Ray Charles).  A Quick One is a match-up nightmare for any song facing it.

I’ve Gotta Feeling (Black Eyed Peas) vs. Super Freak (Rick James).  Kinda gotta listen to these songs when you’re about to rage.  Wednesday night party it is.

Go Your Own Way (Fleetwood Mac) vs. Date with Ikea (Pavement).   Pavement’s only song in the Round of 512, and it’s got fun lyrics if you’ve got Google.

Mannish Boy (Muddy Waters) vs. Down in Mexcio (Coasters).  Call this ‘the battle of the ancients.’  Waters is the grandfather of the rock and blues guitar, and the Coasters were the original cool cats.

  1. Ivor the Engine Drivor says:

Smooth Criminal (Michael Jackson) 4 vs. Under Pressure (Queen/David Bowie) 8

A Quick One While He’s Away (Who) 8 v. What I’d Say (Ray Charles). 6

I’ve Gotta Feeling (Black Eyed Peas) 3 vs. Super Freak (Rick James). 6

Go Your Own Way (Fleetwood Mac) 1 vs. Date with Ikea (Pavement) 8 Good song, but you should have chosen Gold Sounds if you wanted Pavement to stand a chance.

  2. aiko says:

    Smooth Criminal (Michael Jackson) 7
Under Pressure (Queen/David Bowie) 9 [God this song is such a wet dream for me]

A Quick One While He’s Away (Who) 5
What I’d Say (Ray Charles) 7
[My head is too disjointed for that Who song tonight, but Ray Charles was hitting the spot.]

I’ve Gotta Feeling (Black Eyed Peas) 4
    Super Freak (Rick James) 5

Go Your Own Way (Fleetwood Mac) 7.5
    Date with Ikea (Pavement) 5

    Mannish Boy (Muddy Waters) 3
    Down in Mexcio (Coasters) 8

  3. guillermo says:

    Smooth Criminal 6.5
    Under Pressure 9.75

“Love dares you to change our way of caring about ourselves.
This is our last dance, this is ourselves- under pressure.”

I’m trying to hold off on being gun-happy with the 10s, it has been really hard in these last couple days of match-ups. Division M is blowing my mind. 9.75 it is.

    A Quick One While He’s Away 6
    What’d I Say 7

Rock operas are cool, but so freaking long. This would have gotten a better score if it was just the You Are Forgiven section. Or maybe just Pete Townshend singing Let My Love Open The Door (blasphemy for some of y’all to read, I’m sure.) What’d I Say is also long, but a little cooler and a little less cacophonous.

    I Gotta Feeling 5.5
    Super Freak 7.5

A song making it onto my Run Faster playlist doesn’t equate a song getting a good score here. Super Freak does.

    Go Your Own Way 9
    Date With IKEA 6

Lindsay Buckingham guitar solo kills it. Sorry things didn’t work out with Stevie, except not really because then you never would have written this song. Never heard Date With IKEA before, enjoyed it ok.

    Mannish Boy 7.5
    Down In Mexico 7.5

Listened to both twice. Can not decide. On one hand, this is arguably the most famous riff in the history of blues, although it goes back earlier to Bo Diddley, etc. On the other hand, the Coasters kill it at 1:31. Someone else make this call.

  4. G says:

    Smooth Criminal (Michael Jackson) 7
    Under Pressure (Queen/David Bowie) 7.5

A Quick One While He’s Away (Who) 7
What I’d Say (Ray Charles) 6.5

I’ve Gotta Feeling (Black Eyed Peas) 1.5 …. this is absolute shit. [however, I do understand how it’s in the tourney.]
    Super Freak (Rick James) 6.5

Go Your Own Way (Fleetwood Mac) 8.5
    Date with Ikea (Pavement) 7

    Mannish Boy (Muddy Waters) 4
    Down in Mexcio (Coasters) 7

  5. mike says:

    Smooth Criminal (Michael Jackson) 6
    Under Pressure (Queen/David Bowie) 9

A Quick One While He’s Away (Who) 9
What I’d Say (Ray Charles) 7
    Long live the windmill

I’ve Gotta Feeling (Black Eyed Peas) 3
    Super Freak (Rick James) 7

Go Your Own Way (Fleetwood Mac) 7
    Date with Ikea (Pavement) 5

    Mannish Boy (Muddy Waters) 9
    Down in Mexcio (Coasters) 6

  6. adam says:

Smooth Criminal (Michael Jackson) vs. Under Pressure (Queen/David Bowie) = 5 to 9

    A Quick One While He’s Away (Who) v. What I’d Say (Ray Charles) = 4 to 6
“What I’d Say” – great drums.

I’ve Gotta Feeling (Black Eyed Peas) vs. Super Freak (Rick James) = 2 to 5
The Black Eyed Peas song has a lot of potential for a cool dancey radio hit, but they clearly didn’t care.

Go Your Own Way (Fleetwood Mac) vs. Date with Ikea (Pavement) = 7 to 5.5
I assume some stuff off of Crooked Rain is gonna show up and dominate?

Mannish Boy (Muddy Waters) vs. Down in Mexcio (Coasters) = 9.5 to 2.5
Had to refrain from a 10 for this one cause I’ve given out a few already.
From ‘The Last Waltz’ – Pretty great. He’s in a zone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQzZhkn0h98

  7. Danno says:

    Smooth Criminal (Michael Jackson) 6.5
    Under Pressure (Queen/David Bowie) 8

A Quick One While He’s Away (Who) 4
What I’d Say (Ray Charles) 6

I’ve Gotta Feeling (Black Eyed Peas) 6
    Super Freak (Rick James) 5
I openly admit the song is shit…but it’s too damn catchy

Go Your Own Way (Fleetwood Mac) 7.5
    Date with Ikea (Pavement) 5

    Mannish Boy (Muddy Waters) 4
    Down in Mexcio (Coasters) 2

  8. Nick says:

    Smooth Criminal (Michael Jackson) 5
    Under Pressure (Queen/David Bowie) 9

A Quick One While He’s Away (Who) 9
What I’d Say (Ray Charles) 8
Have any of you seen The Who play AQOWHA on the Rolling Stone’s Rock and Roll Circus? They totally steal the show, so much so that Mick Jagger buried the tape for 30 years… What I’d Say is great, I think Ray’ll take this one, but feeling The Who right now.

I’ve Gotta Feeling (Black Eyed Peas) 6
    Super Freak (Rick James) 7
Both sufficiently funky for clubs, driving, and working out. Nothing exemplary about either. Without the weak synth, the Peas would take this, but Super Freak edges out with far superior instrumentals.

Go Your Own Way (Fleetwood Mac) 8
    Date with Ikea (Pavement) 2
Ouch. I feel like I hit the Pavement… with my brain.

    Mannish Boy (Muddy Waters) 9
    Down in Mexico (Coasters) 8
Wow, really enjoyed both of these. Muddy’s just so classic though, gotta give it to him.

  9. Mark O says:

    Smooth Criminal (Michael Jackson) [7.5]
    Under Pressure (Queen/David Bowie) [9]

A Quick One While He’s Away (Who) [5]

I’ve Gotta Feeling (Black Eyed Peas) [7.5]
    Super Freak (Rick James) [7]

Go Your Own Way (Fleetwood Mac) [9]
    Date with Ikea (Pavement) [6]

    Mannish Boy (Muddy Waters) [6]
    Down in Mexcio (Coasters) [7]

  10. janos marton says:

What I’d Say (Ray Charles) 7

I’ve Gotta Feeling (Black Eyed Peas) 9
    Super Freak (Rick James) 7.5

Go Your Own Way (Fleetwood Mac) 7
    Date with Ikea (Pavement) 6.5

    Mannish Boy (Muddy Waters) 6
    Down in Mexcio (Coasters) 8

  11. Adrock says:

Smooth Criminal (Michael Jackson) vs. Under Pressure (Queen/David Bowie) 5.5 – 9

Gotta say – i like alien ant farm’s version better. Oh well – they weren’t winning this one anyway.

    A Quick One While He’s Away (Who) v. What I’d Say (Ray Charles) 5 – 6

I’ve Gotta Feeling (Black Eyed Peas) vs. Super Freak (Rick James) 1 – 7.5

Sorry peas fans – I hate this song. The clubs in San Juan played it a minimum of once and hour all night long, nearly killing my enjoyment of a weeklong trip there last year. It still makes me angry.

Go Your Own Way (Fleetwood Mac) vs. Date with Ikea (Pavement) 6 – 4

Mannish Boy (Muddy Waters) vs. Down in Mexico (Coasters) 6.5 – 9.5

Just love this song. Really sad Muddy Waters couldn’t catch a better matchup.

  12. Astrid says:

Smooth Criminal (Michael Jackson) 5.5 vs. Under Pressure (Queen/David Bowie). 7.5

A Quick One While He’s Away (Who) 6 v. What I’d Say (Ray Charles). 9.5

I’ve Gotta Feeling (Black Eyed Peas) 7.5 vs. Super Freak (Rick James). 7.5

Go Your Own Way (Fleetwood Mac) 6.5 vs. Date with Ikea (Pavement). 6

Mannish Boy (Muddy Waters) 9.5 vs. Down in Mexico (Coasters). 7.5
