Music Tournament Round of 128: Division I Results

The uber-upset of the day goes to #11 Free Fallin’ (Tom Petty), which just thrashed #3 Layla (Derek and the Dominoes), 123.5-108.5. Perhaps Guillermo shouldn’t have gotten people fixated on that long piano finish.  It seems we have seen the last of the one-time guitar god, Eric Clapton, to say nothing of the Dominoes. (Artist #213)

Another routine win for #1 Tangled Up In Blue (Bob Dylan), which defeated #8 Another Brick in the Wall (Pink Floyd), 114.5-105.  Earlier when I announced Pink Floyd’s demise Guillermo had to correct me, but now I can say with some assurance that they have been eliminated. (Artist #214)

#4 A Day in the Life (Beatles) def. #5 Thriller (Michael Jackson), 129-111.5.  A Day in the Life makes the Wall of 10s courtesy of Jacob and Mike, and takes the high score for the round.  Will face Tangled Up In Blue next.   Jackson seems to be sagging a little bit.  This result does not bode well for the upcoming Billie Jean.

#2 I Heard It Through The Grapevine (Marvin Gaye) def. #10 Born in the USA (Bruce Springsteen), 110.8-107.45.  Unimpressive win for Marvin. For Bruce, may have been good to cut this song loose and reduce Bruce fatigue for Born to Run and Thunder Road.

Music Tournament Round of 128: Division K

According to Guillermo’s number crunching, this is the least-liked Division of the tournament.  It certainly raises the most eyebrows. The Fugees? Manu Chao? Jefferson Starship? It’s hard to believe all these cats will be around for the Salty 64.

Listen at Grooveshark and vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com by 8pm Sunday night.

#1 Stand By Me (Ben E. King) vs. #8 Wouldn’t It Be Nice (Beach Boys).  Is it surf’s up for the Beach Boys?

#4 Billie Jean (Michael Jackson) vs. #5 Killing Me Softly (Fugees).  Kind of a downer matchup. Good thing Jefferson Starship is coming up.  Estimated value of that glove, for all you recession-busters, is $40,000-60,000.

#15 Man In Black (Johnny Cash) vs. #10 Me Gustas Tu (Manu Chao). As you can see, both pulled off upsets to get here.

#3 Johnny Appleseed (Joe Strummer) vs. #6 We Built This City (Jefferson Starship)

Music Tournament Round of 128: Division H Results

Lose Yourself carries the day again, making the Wall of 10s thanks to Adrock, Grant and Guillermo.

Meanwhile, there’s some serious mohawk-pulling going on at Camp Armstrong.  Green Day somewhat surprisingly pushed three songs into the Round of 128, but now two are gone, and the third, Holiday, will be up against Nirvana.   Other than Basket Case’s narrow loss to You Can Call Me Al, none of Division H’s matches were all that close.

#1 Baba O’Riley (Who) def. #16 Wonderful World (Sam Cooke), 141-123.   An easy win for Baba, even after taking a hit from Lindsay (2-10).

#4 You Can Call Me Al (Paul Simon) def. #12 Basket Case (Green Day), 117.9-115.7.  People started souring on this Simon song, even in a win.  Sad lyrics/happy tune man, what’s not to like?

#2 American Girl (Tom Petty) def. #7 Just What I Needed (Cars),  135-126. Thank you, Cars, it’s been a pleasure.  As for American Girl, how much further it goes depends on the last minute of the song- the first 2.5 minutes are absolutely perfect.

#11 Lose Yourself (Eminem) def. #3 We Can Work It Out (Beatles), 146-130. Of all the Beatles songs left, this was probably the weakest. That said, another impressive win for Mr. Shady.  Of all the sleepers and underdogs left in the tournament, I’d venture Lose Yourself is one song people did not think would make it to the Round of 64.  It’ll be a 10-point favorite against American Girl, though that song has demonstrated decades of staying power on classic rock radio.

The Cars and Sam Cooke are out of the tournament.  Sorry, Astrid, we knew this day would come. You could even say, it’s been a long, long time comin’…

Music Tournament Round of 128: Division J

Glad to be back, though, as Guillermo said, I’ve been pummelled by work the last few days.

A friend of mine recently said that “hard times require furious dancing.”  It’s time to get out of your seat and moving for #3 Buddy Holly (Weezer) vs. #6 Twist and Shout (Beatles).   Interestingly, the Beatles referred to Buddy Holly as perhaps their greatest influence, even naming themselves in part after his backup band, The Crickets.

#4 Rock the Casbah (Clash) vs. #12 Rocket Man (Elton John).  These songs could not be more different, so I guess it comes down to what mood you’re in.  David Bowie thought Rocket Man was a total ripoff of Space Oddity.  The “Casbah” in question has long been considered the most dangerous part of Algiers (capital of Algeria), resisting intruders both foreign and domestic.

#2 America (Kathy’s Song)(Simon & Garfunkel) vs. #7 One Headlight (Wallflowers).   Surprised young Jacob has made it this far.  America has looked very strong through the first two rounds.

#1 Let’s Get It On (Marvin Gaye) vs. #9 Train in Vain (Clash).  The Clash put up their last two contenders.

Listen at Grooveshark (except Twist and Shout), and vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com by 8pm Saturday.

Living The Dream Music Tournament: Round of 128, Division I

Stories of Divsion I: Well, first off, story of why I’m still posting- Nos is swamped (apparently being a lawyer is a lot of work) so one more day until he’s back in the author’s seat. In the meantime, I don’t mind doing this division, some of my favorites are sandwiched here. In our featured match-up, lone surviving Pink Floyd song “Another Brick In The Wall” tries to claim the third 1 seed upset of the tourney against Blood On The Tracks lead-off tune, “Tangled Up In Blue.” Bob Dylan is sitting at 1-2; this is his last song of the Round of 128 and only post-Highway 61 Revisited track to make it this far.

Other stories: The Beatles and Michael Jackson may be forever linked to those of us annoyed by our inability last decade to download any of the former on iTunes due to the latter’s ownership of publishing rights (MJ actually left those to McCartney in his will, which is why we can buy them now.) They can duke out any bad blood here: A Day In The Life faces off against Thriller. The always polarizing Bruce Springsteen claimed the only Division I Round of 256 upset last round, and will try to continue to do so versus The Prince of Soul himself. And finally, Eric Clapton is still alive with 3 seed ode to Pattie Boyd (awwwwwkward) up against Petty’s story of driving aimlessly around Los Angeles County- I have a feeling piano patience is going to play a big part in this pairing, this deep into the tourney.

Grooveshark link is here except for Another Brick In The Wall and A Day In The Life (figuring out which version of ABITW to use is sort of a headache, but we’re using the same YouTube links we used last round) Vote by commenting on this post or by e-mailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com. Votes are due by Friday evening at 8 pm.

#1 Tangled Up In Blue (Bob Dylan) vs. #8 Another Brick In The Wall (Pink Floyd)

#4 A Day In The Life (The Beatles) vs. #5 Thriller (Michael Jackson)

#2 I Heard It Through The Grapevine (Marvin Gaye) vs. #10 Born In The USA (Bruce Springsteen)

#3 Layla (Derek & The Dominoes) vs. #6 Free Fallin’ (Tom Petty)

Round of 128: Division G Results

Still alive! After Division F’s “Streets” loss and in the face of elimination, U2 puts together a respectable “With or Without You” performance and knocks The Shins and “New Slang” out of the tournament, 136.85-112.15. Bono and the boys move onto the Round of 64. They’ll be facing off against Jimi Hendrix’s “All Along The Watchtower,” which in turn defeated Radiohead’s “Paranoid Android,” 143.8-107.9. In victory, Watchtower will join the Wall of 10’s with nods from Adrock, Astrid, Colin, Dr J, and The Catholic. In defeat, Android will as well, with nods from Danno as well as new voter Ursula.

The other side of the bracket is a little more mixed up. To start, Bruce Springsteen seems to be an extremely polarizing artist for this group. I personally fall on the “love it” side, but as we saw with Jerry Garcia in the Round of 512, artists that voters hate on principal aren’t going to take this thing. Then again, sometimes songs grow on people over the course of a tournament (Example: my S&G “America” score in the 512 was a 3, and in the 256 it was a 9.4.) This morning, “Roll Away Your Stone” had the lead but the balance shifted back to “Thunder Road” through the course of the day- The Boss eliminates Mumford & Sons from the tournament, 120.4-113.2. Springsteen goes to 2-0 this round on songs as well as on appearances on the Wall of 10’s (Nods from Mark O, Janos, and myself. In case no one knew, Mark O is from New Jersey. Just like Bruce Springsteen. They’re both very much from New Jersey.)

Last match-up: Green Day’s “Longview” is a great example of a song without tournament endurance- awesome on the first listen, and maybe not so awesome on consequent listens. It started at an 8 average in the 512…then slipped to a 6.7 in the 256…and now sits at a 6.05 here. This wasn’t enough to hold off a Seger upset- “Night Moves” takes it, 117.5-108.9.

Out: The Shins & Mumford and Sons. Post Y2K songs are dropping like flies. I find this to be completely unsurprising, but we do still have third millenium representatives “Wagon Wheel” (1 seed O) and “Wavin’ Flag” (2 seed P) in the near future.

Living The Dream Music Tournament: Round of 128, Division H

Stories of Division H: And his name was Marshall Mathers. Much like Superstition’s 8 seed in Division B, ever since we went to division seedings Lose Yourself hasn’t been acting like it knows it’s an 11 seed. After posting a ridonkulous 8.26 average in the Round of 256 (tops for Division H, 8th highest of all 256 songs) Eminem seeks continuing giant-slayer success. Paul, John, George, and Ringo will try their best to Work It Out, if “it” refers to putting a halt to the real Slim Shady.

Other stories: 1 seed “Baba O’Riley” tries to lay down a teenage wasteland of trouble to Sam Cooke’s insistant stance that love makes it ok to ignore one’s studies. Tom Petty lines up against The Cars in a battle of late 70s sound that blazed a new direction for rock. And finally, Paul Simon wants to call Green Day his bodyguard, but Billy Joe and the boys really just want someone to listen to them whine.

Grooveshark link is here except for We Can Work It Out– vote by commenting on this post or by e-mailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com, votes are due by Thursday evening at 8 pm. Starting tomorrow night, Janos is tagging in to take us through the rest of the Round of 128, so I’ll see y’all in a week when we start the Six Four. Keep voting and tell yo friends!

#1 Baba O’Riley (The Who) vs. #8 (What A) Wonderful World (Sam Cooke)

#4 You Can Call Me Al (Paul Simon) vs. #12 Basket Case (Green Day)

#2 American Girl (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) vs. #7 Just What I Needed (The Cars)

#3 We Can Work It Out (The Beatles) vs. #11 Lose Yourself (Eminem)

Round of 128: Division F Results

Take a load off, Fanny! Also, did you guys know that the Nazareth that they are singing about is where the C.F. Martin Guitar company is based. I just stumbled upon this ridiculously thorough interpretation of all of the lyrics of The Weight (also interesting…the “load” in the chorus is maybe a reference to the clap? Like not the clap that involves your hands? Seriously, I couldn’t make that up, read the article.) Anyways, “The Weight” continued its business-as-usual dominance, defeating Come On Eileen 127.45-109.35. Grant, Jacob, and Natalie combine forces to send it to the Wall of 10s. Tura lura, tora lora, its an Irish lulla-goodbye to Dexy’s Midnight Runners.

High score of the day goes to Johnny Cash’s “Hurt” which put an all too appopriate hurting on U2’s “Where The Streets Have No Name,” 128.95-112.8.

I really thought “Folsom Prison Blues” was going to have an easier time than “Hurt,” but that didn’t seem to be the case at all. Jack and Diane fought hard through the last 48 hours and almost pulled off the upset. In the end, Cash takes this one as well- 117.9-115.75. John Cougar Mellencamp is out of the tournament as well; the Folsom win sets up a Young Cash vs Old Cash showdown in the Round of 64.

Only upset of the day goes to Elvis- the King cannot be kept down! “Suspicious Minds” sneaks by “Over The Hills and Far Away”, 120.05-113.1. Led Zeppelin finishes the Round of 128 at 1-3.

Living The Dream Music Tournament: Round of 128, Division G

Division G stories: If this tournament was happening in some theoretical Rock & Roll Heaven concert hall that still-alive contenders got a day pass to visit, I could totally see Jimi Hendrix standing up in the Green Room as the last chords of “Jack and Diane” in Division F finish up in the distance, slinging his guitar over his shoulder, and saying to no one in particular: “Ready to see some shit?” 1 seed “All Along The Watchtower” is coming off of a division-leading 7.91 average in the last round, and lines up against Radiohead’s 8 seed “Paranoid Android.” Radiohead is 1-0 and this is their last Round of 128 song.

Other stories: Jimi will start us at a 10, and then the Shins and U2 will collectively bring us down to a 2 in a battle of softer melodies between 4 seed “With or Without You” and 12 seed “New Slang.” Green Day premiers in its first of three appearances with 2 seed hard-rocking “Longview,” but first it will have to get past Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band’s 7 seed classic “Night Moves,” the song that took the boys from local Michigan faves to the national stage. And last, the only song from the last 12 months still alive is Mumford & Sons Macbeth-inspired “Roll Away Your Stone” at an 11 seed. It faces off against Springsteen, who is coming off the biggest and most exciting upset in the tourney so far, and 3 seed “Thunder Road.”

Grooveshark link is here, except for Night Moves, and votes are due by Wednesday at 8 pm by commenting on this post or by e-mailing votes to LTDdotorg@gmail.com.

#1 All Along The Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix) vs. #8 Paranoid Android (Radiohead)

#4 With Or Without You (U2) vs. #12 New Slang (The Shins)

#3 Thunder Road (Bruce Springsteen) vs. #11 Roll Away Your Stone (Mumford and Sons)

#2 Longview (Green Day) vs. #7 Night Moves (Bob Seger)

Round of 128, Division E Results

All four of the match-ups in Division E ran very, very close- however, in the end all four top seeds held off their formidable competitors (very formidable, as no song won their match by more than 8 points.) High score went to Bohemian Rhapsody, racking up 123.1 points to 117.35 and defeating In My Life.

If there was any band that needed a win today, it was Led Zeppelin and they fortunately picked up their first of the Round of 128. Stairway to Heaven defeats Seven Nation Army, 122.9-115.55, and eliminates the White Stripes from the tournament.

The stronger seeded Here Comes The Sun did give the boys from Liverpool a win for the day, defeating The Who’s Won’t Get Fooled Again, 121.1-115.3.

The last results are not a good indication of things to come for Michael Jackson. 1 seed Beat It did defeat We Didn’t Start The Fire 108.7-103.7, but was the only winner who didn’t break a 7.0 average vote.

Eliminated: White Stripes. Both The Who and Billy Joel go to 0-1, but both have a 1 seed left to play (Baba O’Riley-H and Piano Man-P.) Beatles now 2-1.
