Round of 256: Division L, Left Side Results

Well, no close calls here!  Every result was over 20 points except for one 12.95 win, which wasn’t all that close either.  Highest Score goes to Verve, with 194.

Round of 256: Division M, Left Side

David Bowie

Votes due by Saturday, July 2nd at 8 pm EST.  New voters, click here to understand what it is we do here.

The PCT has been plugging along for a month now and we’ve only got 4 more divisions (8 more posts) left in the Round of 256.  Some quick stats for you nerds out there.  So far 115 different people have voted and the site has had more than 13,000 views.  Not too shabby.  Now is as good a time as any to remind everyone to invite your friends so we can grow the tournament even more.  Enough with my nerdly ambitions though, on to today’s match-ups.

Tunes are here! (Except David Bowie, which you can catch on youtube)

Round of 256: Division L, Right Side

oo-ee-oo he looks just like buddy holly

I’m feeling good about this set of tunes.  We’ve been seeing some rather mediocre scores lately, but I think (hope) these have potential to draw some more 9s and 10s from voters.  At least most of these songs won’t put you to sleep.

You can hear them all by following this magical link.  Share your scores and thoughts below.  Votes are due Friday, July 1st at 8 pm Eastern.  (I’m not sure what happened to June either.)

Our highest seeded song in this set is more than 50 years old.  Continue reading

Round of 256: Division K, Right Side Results

Updated- forgot to add in the very last vote, which switched two of the winners. This is not my week at all. Much thanks to the Living The Dream Team for checking on that.

More close matches for the most part, but one tournament songstress did emerge as we closed out Division K. I want to start this post though by thanking Adrock for his behind-the-scenes help updating the brackets- less glory than being a poster, but if you don’t have someone behind the scenes then nothing gets done. Like in that movie Sneakers. And that other movie Mission Impossible. And now, onto the results… Continue reading

Round of 256: Division L, Left Side

Votes due by Thursday, June 30th at 8 pm EST:

Hey! Just trying to figure out how to post here so instead of doing a long list, I’ll just be quick and let people make their calls.  (plus I’m feeling a bit lazy…)  But looks like we’re in for an interesting set of match ups.  We’ve got Alice Cooper going up against Shannon Hoon.  There’s some interesting history here.  A big Alice Cooper backer was Groucho Marx (pictured right)

who understood that the entire facepaint thing was really just an extreme version of vaudville.

We’ve also got Axl Rose who backed Shannon Hoon (left) and the boys because they both came from the same city of Lafyette, Indiana.  If Shannon hadn’t OD’d, who know how big Blind Melon could of gotten.  Just goes to show that it’s more than just bee girls who leave a sting.  Ok, bad try at a pun, but that’s where I’m at right now, so we’ll run with it.  Now- Onward toward the music!

Update from G-mo: Playlist fixed except for Mavis Staples (6/29, 11:50 AM) Listen Here! (on grooveshark) except for Mavis you’ll have to follow the YouTube link.

Round of 256: Division K, Left Side Results

Van Morrison

This set of match-ups was pretty evenly…matched.  All four of them went back and forth between the contenders over the last two days, but in the end someone has to win. Continue reading

Round of 256: Division J, Right Side Results

No kegs for you, Electrelane!

Hope y’all haven’t been losing sleep awaiting tonight’s results….

Well, it’s been another day of “meh” scores all around but fairly close matchups.  All songs averaged in the 5-6 range, except for poor Electrelane which came out with a 4.55.  Better luck next time, ladies.

The highest score of the night belongs to (surprise) ol’ Jimmy Brown. #2 Try Me (James Brown) beat #15 Like A Rose (Lucinda Williams) 159.7 to 142.7.

Round of 256: Division K, Right Side

Votes due by Wednesday, June 29th at 8 pm EST: Voters- apologies for the recount from Saturday’s results- I missed some votes or didn’t line up the numbers right or something like that, and so additional apologies to any Cali Swag District fans who are disappointed by the new results. Anyways, moving on to the right side of Division K we have a great slew of female singer songwriters, a few oldie-but-goodies, and a little bit of the in-between. Continue reading

UPDATED Round of 256: Division I, Right Side Results

Update: Apparently I can’t add. And missed Jacob and Izzy’s scores. These are new results. There is a change. Public- I just deleted three intro sentences in a row, and couldn’t figure out which one to put down. Still in Wildwood, which has been amazing, and that has nothing to do with these results. On to them. Continue reading

Lawyers, Guns and Money: U.S. Supreme Court Threatens Campaign Finance Reform in NYC

By Janos Marton and Morgan Pehme

Cross-posted at Huffington Post

New York City’s campaign finance system, often lauded as the best in the nation, has a secret. It’s under attack.

On the heels of last year’s devastating Citizens United decision that opened the floodgates for more corporate spending in elections, the United States Supreme Court may be about to severely curtail the role of public financing in elections. The case, McComish v. Bennett, involves a challenge to Arizona’s public financing system, specifically a provision granting “trigger funding” to participating candidates facing well-funded opponents. Following oral arguments in late March of this year, it appears the Supreme Court is likely to declare “trigger funds” unconstitutional, a determination that could have wide-ranging implications and affect the way we run elections here in New York.
