Round of 256: Division P, Right Side

Push It

Votes due by Saturday, July 9nd at 8 pm EST.  New voters, click here to understand what it is we do here.

We’re so close to the end of the Round of 256 I can taste it!  Our final 8 songs before we move on to the next round are upon us, and tonight’s match-ups are bringing out some of the heavy hitters from the last tournament: Van Morrison, Springsteen and Dylan.  These 3 alone have 30 songs across both tournaments!  Salt N Pepa, America, Muse, Meatloaf and Frankie Valli are up to the task though.

BREAKING NEWS: The Beatles are out of the tournament.  A last minute discovery found that Helter Skelter was in the previous tournament.  It has been replaced with Meat Loaf’s Paradise by the Dashboard Light…a worthy replacement in my humble opinion.

Final songs here!! (Except Moonshine Whiskey and I Don’t Believe You, which are here and here — we had some issues finding the right version of I Don’t Believe You, so if that link gives you trouble, just use this one)

Aiko’s Trek Through the West: Valier Rock City, Taxidermy, and Cowboy Art

Goblin Valley: Place of Cool Rocks

There are few things I love more than cool rocks.  Thus, when my dear friend Scott Brauer, told me about a place called Rock City in Montana that’s reminiscent of the stone structures of Goblin Valley in Southern Utah, I was all about it.  Even though I was beat from four physically exhausting days of running and hiking, I drove east from Glacier by way of Valier, a very tidy, very tiny farming town in the north of the state. Better Than The Google Home Page

Hey Living The Dreamers- this won’t be long, I just had to share this Internet Easter Egg brought to my attention through lackadaisical scrolling through the Facebook News Feed at work last night (thanks to Andi for bringing it to my attention.) Gotta tip my hat to the Black Acre Brewing Company out of Indianapolis, IN for their innovative decision to direct kids stumbling onto their site to something much more entertaining than the Google home page.

When you go to their home page, click “I Am Under 21.”

Round of 256: Division O, Left Side Results

Belleruche says, "Don't be a tool"

Well folks, we’ve got a new high scorer of the tourney.  With three 10s and a whopping 8.33 average, Dire Straits’ Romeo and Juliet left The Association’s Never My Love (who had a respectable average of  6.62) in the dust 208.2 to 165.5.

Voters were lukewarm on the Boss in this round, but he still slipped by as Streets Of Fire (Bruce Springsteen) defeats Cath Caroll (Unrest) 136.8 to 124.7. Continue reading

Round of 256: Division P, Left Side

Votes due Friday, July 8th at 8 PM EST: This is my first post-Turkey post, and let me tell you, it’s going to be good to hear some quality music again.  Turkey is a lovely country, but you can only hear Akon and “My Heart Will Go On” so many times.  Sometimes when I travel I can’t tell whether the locals like certain American trash pop, or they are just playing it because they think tourists will like it. Aiko’s Trek Through the West: Hiking in Glacier

EDIT: Now with decent pictures.

My shoulders are lousy with bug bites. When I put on my night shirt, I noticed some rust-colored stains exactly where the bites are… Gross.

Anyway! Hiking! Is what I did for three days straight.  I arrived in Glacier National Park at about 7:30 in the evening evening, and set up camp at Avalanche, on the east side of the park. I am not an early riser, so after a leisurely breakfast and visit to the visitor center, I picked a hike and headed off at about 1:00. Continue reading

Round of 256: Division N, Right Side Results

A cowboy, a gangster, and Maurice walk into a diner...

Whoa. The results of the right side of Division N looked pretty set, and then with the fury of the January chill across Lake Michigan, Chicago roommates Maureen, Chris, and Caroline laid down the law, turning things topsy-turvier than the Topsy Turvy song in Disney’s “Hunchback of Notre Dame” (why would I reference that. Why would I want anyone to know I know that.) Let’s review- Continue reading

Round of 256: Division O Right Side

The theme of this Division is something about travel and enjoying music from around the world.  We have artists from the UK, South Africa, Mali, Cape Verde, Barbados and one who was imported from Detroit.  Lots of geographic diversity here.  We also have a song about cartography (Maps kind of is, right?) and a song called “Go.”  I think this Division is here to remind us to take an exotic summer vacation!  Continue reading

Round of 256: Division O, Left Side

knopfler rocks the red white & blueHappy 4th of July!  In honor of Independence Day, I invite you to use your democratic privileges to decide which 4 of these 8 songs will progress to the Round of 128.  Three of these matchups pair an American band against a British band, but don’t let your patriotism bias you too much.  Share your votes and your opinions by commenting below by Wednesday, July 6th at 8 pm Eastern.  You can listen to the songs here.

The #1 seed of this division is believed by some to be a contender for the PCT championship.  “Romeo and Juliet” is one of the British rock band Dire Straits’ biggest hits Continue reading

Round of 256: Division N, Left Side Results

Oof- not the highest scores for the 4th of July weekend, but at least we had 20+ voters. High score goes to the Boss, who extends his Round of 256 streak to 2-0 as “Hungry Heart” reduces Pixies’ “Bone Machine” to…well, to bones. Springsteen advances, 154.6-104.
