Why Triathlalons Without Training Are Not Recommended (Part 1 of 4)

Dreamers, I can’t help but feel the need to post an account, minor as it may be, of my adventurous Sunday morning finishing my first sprint triathlon. Sprint not because I sprinted the whole time, but because a regular triathlon is longer than what I did. Now, let me be perfectly clear about how little training I did for this thing. Round of 32: Divisions A, B, C and D Championships

Bono

The round of 32 is here, and it’s going to go by fast!  There are only 9 more voting posts left in the tournament.  You might be getting a little bit sick of song repetition, but this is where things stop being polite and start getting real.  If you really want a song to advance, now is the time to start justifying yourself in the comments, else the Danno Hammers might start flying. Use the widget below or click here.  Ready. Set. Go! Continue reading

The Peoples’ Choices

For many weeks we have passed judgment on eachother’s  musical tastes.  As we enter the Round of 32, aka the Division Championships, it’s time to check in and who is ruling the nominating roost.

Still Top Dog (three nominations)

Guillermo, the undisputed king of road trip music tournaments, has put all those playlists to good use, generating three potential Division champions.  Continue reading

Round of 64: Division O & P Results

On the last leg of the marathon

And with this the Round of 64 comes to a close.  I think 64 is the hump of the tournament.  It can feel like a bit of a slog: You’ve been doing this for awhile, there are still some songs you really don’t care for and don’t think should be there at this point, and you’ve had to hear them more times than you’d like.  But once you get over this round, the quality of the songs is more-or-less universally agreed upon, and rather than the agony of listening to songs you really can’t stand, you start hitting the more pleasant agony of deciding between two songs you really love and want to move on.

What I’m saying is: If you’ve been feeling a little bit of tournament fatigue, take heart, buck up, and dive in, because these last rounds will be fast and fun.

And with that, our final results.   Continue reading

Round of 64: Division M and N Results

Again, these scores are really close and I’m meeting someone at the same time that voting ends, so forgive the lateness of the results in advance. We’ll prepare this as though the people that won at 5:45 PM were the winners, and then I’ll answer the questions on how everyone that voted after Anne S changed the outcomes:

1) Did the Darkness stare the Bowie down the barrel of his 2 point lead and surge back to win this one? Continue reading

Round of 64: Division K and L Semi-Final Results

No drama here, though plenty on Wall Street.   Actually, part of the reasons we had so many blow-outs in Divisions K and L is that three of the winners posted very high averages, with Landslide leading the way with an 8.08, the highest average this round. Continue reading

Round of 64: Division O & P Semi-Finals

Actually I couldn't figure out how to make blingy gifs

Well, folks, these two divisions wrap up the Round of 64, and it’s only a few short days until the Round of 32 starts, where we determine our division champions.  In sports, I think this is the point where they start handing out pennant flags.  On the internet, probably the best these songs can hope for are blingy gifs of pennant flags.

I’d love to do all the fancy new voting forms and embedded playlists, but I’m in the middle of moving so I’m afraid I just have time for the basics today.  Votes in the comments below by 8:00PM EST Friday, August 12.  Listen to the songs here, except Uncle Tupelo.

Round of 64: Division I/J Semi-Final Results

Ray ponders tonight's big win

No surprises here.  All expected seeds won their respective match ups.  All of the scores were basically in the same range too, which was a little weird.  Onto the scores!

Ray LaMontagne remains to be the best thing.  You Are The Best Thing (Ray LaMontagne) defeats White Knuckles (OK Go) 179.05 to 159.3

Tonight wasn’t such a great night for Frankie Valli.  Ooh La La (Faces, The) defeats Oh What A Night (December 1963) (Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons) 171.6 to 153.05

Mick Jagger doesn't approve of your voting

The Rolling Stones finally got grounded.  Midnight Train To Georgia (Gladys Knight And The Pips) defeats Get Off Of My Cloud (Rolling Stones, The) 179.85 to 166.3

Smokey Robinson still has a hold on the PCT.  You’ve Really Got A Hold On Me (Smokey Robinson & The Miracles) defeats Home Sweet Home (Motley Crue) 177 to 152.9

Round of 64: Divisions M and N Semi-Finals

Votes due by Thursday, August 11th at 8 PM: Team, we have exactly 1+2+4+8+16+8=39 match-ups left to go before we crown our People’s Choice. It feels these days as though the mob at the start of the marathon has thinned into the survivors still alive with 4 miles left to go. And more elbow room makes it anyone’s game. Could our champion be someone from one of these Divisions? Only time will tell, but in the meantime let’s dive in. Continue reading
