Covers Tournament: Round of 128, Day 11 Results

Wow. We had some serious high flyers in this round and a couple of contests that could have gone either way. Five of our contestants had scores above 6.85 and three had scores above seven, putting them in the top six for the tournament so far. Unfortunately, two of those three songs went up against one another, which meant that one of them had to go home.

In any battle, only one can survive...

I thought the marquee match-up would have been Ike & Tina vs CCR, and while that didn’t disappoint, the real battle proved to be between Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton. Both songs in the clash of the country legends were extremely popular, and I know many of you expressed frustration that you had to choose between two of these so early in the tournament. Hopefully you’ll find some consolation knowing that both songs left it all on the floor, going back and forth for the better part of the last forty-eight hours. And now, the results:

Covers Tournament: Round of 128, Day 13

Votes due Thursday, October 20th at 11 PM EST: Alright friends- as usual, I’m going a little country on my day. However, that said we have seen some pretty low voter turnouts in recent days, so hopefully having some familiar radio hits mixed in with some guitar picking gems will get people back on board. Grooveshark link is here, best of luck to all songs.

Jeffrey Foucault and Rodney Parker match guitars on classic rock tracks fifteen years removed to kick us off. Go to it- here’s some Continue reading

Covers Tournament: Round of 128, Day 12

Today’s songs are brought to you by a slow work day and a desire to not think about politics for a hot second.   After today’s battles we’ll be three quarters of the way done with the first round.  Listen to the songs here and vote by 11pm EST on Wednesday.

In 1950, Muddy Waters recorded “Rollin’ Stone”, one of several of his songs to use the phrase.   The Rolling Stones‘ original lead guitarist, Brian Jones (he of death-by-swimming pool fame) lobbied for the new British crew to adapt that as their band name in 1962, and Dylan’s classic, “Like a Rollin’ Stone“, followed three years later.   Jagger, Richards and co. cover Dylan, and go head to head with Cake, who are covering Black Sabboth’s “War Pigs.”  As one of the people who hated on Cake’s cover of “I Will Survive”, I should note that this cover is much tighter. Covers Tournament: Round of 128, Day 11

Hopefully everyone enjoyed a lovely fall weekend (for those of you not on the east coast, you missed a beaut’). Mondays after lovely weekends tend to suck, which is why I thought it was particularly important to pick out tunes capable of lifting you up on what might otherwise be a rude return to the working week.

Today's set is the cure for your case of the you-know-whats.

Without further ado, here are your matchups for the Round of 128, part the eleventh. Songs are here, except for Natural Woman, which is here, and You Shook Me All Night Long, which is here. Votes are due by Tuesday at 9pm EST.

Covers Tournament: Round of 128, Day 10 Results

Not a huge turnout for this round, but we have got some winners that are ready to move on to the next round.  We had a pretty close call in almost every match up – a good reminder to get your friends to vote along with you!

So ready to take it to the next round!

First up, Beyonce’s Sex on Fire defeated Mr. Little Jeans’ version of The Suburbs – averaging 5.43 and 5.35, respectively.   Sooo close.

Covers Tournament: Round of 128, Day 9 Results

Paging Brian Orce (see bangs)

Healthy, but not startling averages for today’s winners, all of whom averaged in the 6s.  Voter turn out was pretty weak, to say the least.

Congrats to Metallica, who have not caught on in previous tournaments.  Their cover of “Turn the Page” toppled Bad Plus’s “Tom Sawyer,” 69.9-57.5.

Not the most exciting looking band in the world.

Poor Eddie Vedder lost for the second day in a row, and has been eliminated from the tournament.  This time,  Mercy Mercy Me was vanquished by Cake, who Will Survive, 68.3-53.3.

Jenny Lewis pleased the crowd with her delightful cover of “Handle with Care” (though no one is quite sure who was backing her up), taking out Yo La Tengo’s “You Can Have It All,”   74.3-52.3, earning the high score of the day.   Yo La Tengo makes great albums, but they have simply not broken through in this tournament setting.

Venus in Furs’ ballad, “Tumbling Down”, looked smooth taking out Linkin Park’s “Rollin in the Deep,” 73.2-57.3.  It even made the Wall of 10s, thanks to Aiko and Astrid.

Let’s shake the dust off this weekend and end the first round with a bang.

Covers Tournament: R128, Day 8 Results

This is me relaxing and not worrying about anyone taking my 1 seed. Don't even try, Days 9 through 16 winners.

We have a new contender smoking the competition, the likes of which haven’t been seen since the glory days of Somebody To Love. The highlight of the results here is Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s “Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World” pulling a blistering 8.068 average and dropping Billie Holiday’s “Blue Moon” 201.7-164.2. That’s good for first in the seeding by over half a point in average, with 32 songs left to post on the board. I created a page with seeds so far in case you are curious, by the way. Covers Tournament Round of 128 Day 7: Results

Sahara Hotnights is too punk for music tournaments anyway

Since I read some science somewhere that screens can throw off your sleep schedule, I’m trying to step away from electronics at least an hour before I got to bed.  And since high school starts stupidly early (there’s also science about that), I’m trying to unplug earlier these days.  Therefore, here’s just the results:

Covers Tournament: Round of 128, Day 9

Another eclectic mix as we move into the second half of the first round.   Listen to the songs here; vote by commenting below before 11pm EST, Friday.

When Danno nominated Metallica’s “Turn the Page,” he lamented its certain defeat.  What he didn’t know is that the song grew on yours truly quite a bit freshman year.  Stuck with an otherwise excellent roommate who blasted metal until the wee hours of the morning, Turn the Page was part of a “compromise” playlist I struck with Adrock. Finding an opponent was tough- this is the only metal cover in the tournament.  That’s why it’ll face a jazz cover, the Bad Plus’s cover of early metal anthem, “Tom Sawyer.” Continue reading
