Living the Dream Music Tournament: Day 28 (Round of 512)

So I guess this should have gone up last night too, but I don’t imagine many people would have voted yet, so here are the belated Day 28 match-ups.   Find ’em at Grooveshark, except “Here Comes the Sun and Safety Dance.”   Vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com.  Votes are due by 10pm Sunday.

Here Comes the Sun (Beatles) vs. Safety Dance (Men Without Hats).  For Safety Dance to even have a chance, you should kind of watch the video and do the dance.

Electric Avenue (Eddy Grant) vs. Tennessee (Arrested Development)

Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen) vs. Losing My Edge (LCD Soundsystem)

Birthday (Sugarcubes) vs. Beat It (Michael Jackson)

Seven Nation Army (White Stripes) vs. Hero of the Day (Metallica)

Jerry Still Has It!

Check out this money clip of Jerry Seinfeld explaining the difference between “great” and “sucks” on the Letterman show.   The man is still money.

Living the Dream Music Tournament: Day 25 Results

What an incredible series of battles!  At 5pm today, three of the match-ups were separated by a half point.   The ultimate show-down was “Shout” vs. “LSTNT”.  The two were tied for the entire 48 hours, with the Rolling Stones ultimately pulling ahead of Otis Day and the Knights, 130-129.  Not bad for a fictional band.  They probably would have had better staying power than the Stones, who might wear on people by the time they’re through with their dozen or so contestants.

Don’t Fear the Reaper (Blue Oyster Cult) def Natural Mystic (Bob Marley), 106-92.

Born to Run (Bruce Springsteen) def Take It Easy (Eagles), 121.5-110.

The Only Living Boy in New York (Simon and Garfunkel) def. Beyond the Sea (Bobby Darin) , 114.8-110.5.

Fool in the Rain (Led Zeppelin) def. Gin and Juice (Snoop Dogg), 106.5  to  106.
Let’s Spend the Night Together (Rolling Stones)  def. Shout (Otis day and the Knights) 130-129.5.

Snoop Dogg and Bobby Darin, two peas in a pod, peace out of this mother.

Living the Dream Music Tournament: Day 27 (Round of 512)

Happy New Years Eve to all! As I wrote yesterday, Guillermo and I will be pregaming and listening to tournament music at East 14th Street- so New Yorkers feel free to come on by.  Here’s the Grooveshark link today’s songs.  Vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com.

Johnny B. Goode (Chuck Berry) vs. Gimme Some Lovin’ (Spencer Davis Group). Two old school songs to start off Day 27.

Three Little Birds (Bob Marley) vs. Touch of Grey (Grateful Dead).  Two optimistic songs to close out 2010.

Sweet Jane (Velvet Underground) vs. The Rising (Bruce Springsteen).  Not expected to be close.

Immigrant Song (Led Zeppelin) vs. Do You Remember Rock ‘n Roll Radio (Ramones).  Some energy to rock out to on the 31st.

All Apologies (Nirvana) vs. I’ll Be There (Jackson 5). Honorary odd match-up of the day, after the big success of Zeppelin v. Snoop.

Same Boy You’ve Always Known (White Stripes) vs. Mrs. Robinson (Simon and Garfunkel).  A classy way to close out a classless year.

Living the Dream Music Tournament: Day 26 (Round of 512)

Another great winter day in Division D.  Aretha and Journey step up to the plate tonight. Listen on Grooveshark, except Eleanor Rigby.  Vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com.   To be clear, you can just pick the song, and it’ll be scored 8-6 in favor of the winning song.  But it’s much more fun to rank 1-10 like everyone else.

Shop Around (Smokey Robinson) vs. Respect (Aretha Franklin).  Smokey’s last stand after a devastating loss for Tracks of My Tears a few weeks ago.

Eleanor Rigby (Beatles) vs. For What It’s Worth (Buffalo Springfield)

Hotel California (Eagles) vs. Yellow (Coldplay)

American Music (Violent Femmes) vs. Cannonball (Breeders)

Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow (Fleetwood Mac) vs. Don’t Stop Believing (Journey)

Living the Dream Music Tournament: Day 23 Results

The unequivocal winner for today is Lookin Out My Back Door by CCR, which put up a monster average in crushing Truckin (Grateful Dead), 105-77.

Hallelujah (Jeff Buckley) def. Jolene (Dolly Parton), 93-82.  Three people called for the Leonard Cohen version, and I’m tempted to comply next round, but I don’t want to piss of the Buckley-ites, if those exist.

Tunnels (Arcade Fire) def. Holland 1945 (Neutral Milk Hotel), 101-79.  We’ll see how many Arcade songs advance.  I’d handicap it at 2.

A close one.  Livin’ On a Prayer (Bon Jovi) def. Friday I’m in Love (Cure) , 90-85.

Hey Ya (Outkast) def. Welcome to Jamrock (Damien Marley), 103-81.  Certainly one of the top songs of the decade.

Tonight Damien Marley, the Cure, Dolly Parton and Neutral Milk Hotel were all bounced from the tournament.
