Living the Dream Music Tournament: Day 22 Results

Maybe not overrated? “Like a Rollin’ Stone” (Bob Dylan) posted the highest score of the day, taking down “Crossroads” (Cream), 89-71.

An Astrid favorite, Personality Crisis (New York Dolls) def. Live and Let Die (Paul McCartney), 62-56.

Louie Louie (Kingsmen) def. Rave On (Buddy Holly), 72-64.  I believe Buddy Holly has another song left.

Sympathy for the Devil (Rolling Stones) def. Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard (Paul Simon), 83-62.  Sympathy looking sharp.

Sunday Bloody Sunday (U2) def. White Wedding (Billy Idol), 74-59.  See ya, Billy.

Living the Dream Music Tournament: Day 21 Results

Division B wrapped up with four head to heads that went down to the wire.  It seems that we may indeed have a little sleeper in the Kinks’ second single, All Day and All of the Night.

I’m actually more flabbergasted by what just happened with Time. Like Adrock, I believed that Time had serious legs to win the whole damn thing.  I was actually tempted to “tip the scales” for the first time this tournament, but not only would that be wrong, but it would set a terribly difficult precedent to follow.  So rest assured, democracy survived a challenge tonight.

All Day and All of the Night (Kinks) def. Crazy Train (Ozzy Osbourne): 54-50.

Staying Alive (Bee Gees) def. The Twist (Chubby Checker) 49-48.

Hotel Yorba (White Stripes) def. Wildwood Flower (June Carter) 47-45.

Creep (Radiohead) def. Time (Pink Floyd),  55-54.5.

Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix)  def.  The Gang’s All Here (Dropkick Murphys), 52-46.

Self Esteem (Offspring) def. Save Your Generation (Jawbreaker), 48.5-39.

For Chubby Checker, the Dropkick Murphys, Jawbreaker and June Carter, the tournament wishes you a happy holiday season.

Oh, and tell people to vote. We’ve lost more than half our crew to Jesus and Santa.

Living the Dream Music Tournament: Day 23 (Round of 512)

This epic snow storm is perfect for listening to music.   Ladies and gentlemen, I’m proud to welcome Arcade Fire to the tournament.  One person on another blog questioned how I could have 5 of their songs in the tourney, and while “Sprawl II” is something of a personal favorite, the other four are pretty epic.  That includes “Tunnels”, which kicks things off tonight.  Check ’em out on Grooveshark and vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com.

Tunnels (Arcade Fire) vs. Holland 1945 (Neutral Milk Hotel)

Hey Ya (Outkast) vs. Welcome to Jamrock (Damian Marley)

Truckin’ (Grateful Dead) vs. Lookin’ Out My Back Door (CCR)

Jolene (Dolly Parton) vs. Hallelujah (Jeff Buckley)

Livin’ On a Prayer (Bon Jovi) vs. Friday I’m in Love (Cure)

Living the Dream Music Tournament: Day 22 (Round of 512)

Division C gets off to a strong start today, with Sympathy for the Devil and Like a Rollin’ Stone making their first appearances.  ‘Rollin Stone was named the #1 song of all-time by Rolling Stone Magazine, which partly inspired this tournament.

Listen at Grooveshark, and vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com. Oddly, Grooveshark doesn’t have Like a Rollin’ Stone or Live and Let Die.

Like a Rollin’ Stone (Bob Dylan) vs. Crossroads (Cream)

Sunday Bloody Sunday (U2) vs. White Wedding (Billy Idol)

Louie Louie (Kingsmen) vs. Rave On (Buddy Holly).  Old school battle.

Personality Crisis (New York Dolls) vs. Live and Let Die (Paul McCartney).  Paul (solo) has two songs in the tournament, as do the Dolls.

Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard (Paul Simon) vs. Sympathy for the Devil (Rolling Stones).  Somebody had to go against Sympathy- why not a joyous tune that whistles its bridge.

Merry Christmas eve to all.   Here’s a rock n roll Christmas carol for you.

Living the Dream Music Tournament: Day 20 (Round of 512)

The champion from Biloxi’s legendary 64-song, 100-voter tournament is back in action tonight against Substitute.  Shouldn’t be close, but keep an eye on the Pickett/Harley match-up, as the winner will take on Superstition (or Substitute) in the Round of 256.

All tunes at Grooveshark.

Substitute (Who) vs. Superstition (Stevie Wonder)

Caravan (Van Morrison) vs. LA Woman (Doors)

Guilty Conscience (Eminem) vs. Gravel Pit (Wutang Clan)

In the Midnight Hour (Wilson Picket)  vs. Make Me Smile (Steve Harley)

Wild World (Cat Stevens) vs. Car (Built to Spill).

Many of these songs are well-known, but I want to highlight “Car”, which has some fantastic lyrics.   You can vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com before 8pm Christmas Day.

Living the Dream Music Tournament: Day 18 Results

After his disastrous performance on Day 18, I should put in a word about Jay-Z.  He has 11 straight number one albums.  I wouldn’t call myself a big fan, but when I saw him live I knew all his songs, and liked many of them.  He is considered the best rapper of all-time, with the possible exceptions of the long-dead Tupac and Biggie.  Rolling Stone even let him pen the intro for the Top 500 article, though one reader pointed out that their distinguished list didn’t include any of his songs in the top 170.   So it’s fine with me if all of Jay Z’s songs go down in flames, but I’m gonna give the man his due- at least by seeing if “Encore” and “Empire State of Mind” can get anywhere in our tournament.  As for Forever Young, Juicy (Notorious B.I.G) crushed it, 88-47.

The other hot topic was Africa (Toto), which got either very high or very low songs from most of you.  In the end, it went down to Changes (David Bowie), 91-93.5.  Guillermo’s video was hilarious, though.

You Can’t Always Get What You Want (Rolling Stones) def. Whipping Post (Allman Brothers), 101-93.  This was closer than I expected, and I tip my hat to the Allman Brothers, who will be back later with Ramblin’ Man.

Don’t Worry Baby (Beach Boys) def. House of the Rising Sun (Animals), 92-84. Ho-hum numbers, sure, but Don’t Worry Baby becomes the third song to win two matches.

Don’ t Think Twice It’s Alright (Bob Dylan) def. Feelin’ Alright (Traffic), 98-88.

Rednecks v. inner city rappers, heck yeah.  But some of you gave no props at all to Sweet Home Alabama, which I found surprising.  A “1” or “2”?  Really?  I guess you’ve never had to sing it on stage in a Berlin punk rock karaoke bar.  The Furious Five take this one, 98-75.

Living the Dream Music Tournament: Day 19 (Round of 512)

We move on to a new division tonight, possibly the most competitive group in the entire tournament.  You may not see it in this week’s match-ups, as I view the group as top-heavy.  But within Division B, I see Time (Pink Floyd), LA Woman and Superstition all as championship contenders.   Here’s tonight’s lineup, available on Grooveshark, except Hey Jude.

My Name is Jonas (Weezer) vs. When I Come Around (Green Day).  Good evening, 1994.

When the Levee Breaks (Led Zeppelin) v. Devil Went Down to Georgia (Charlie Daniels Band)

Man on the Moon (REM) vs. Hand in Glove (Smiths)

Hey Jude (Beatles) vs. End of the Road (Boyz II Men).  Yeah, I went there.

Walk Like An Egyptian (Bangles) vs. Boys of Summer (Don Henley)
