LTD Music Tournament: Division A, Round of 256

As Guillermo noted yesterday, it’s a long road from 1-0 to 9-0, and today, our survivor songs take the next step on that path.   As most of you know by now, the scores you gave songs in the Round of 512 have dictated their seedings for the Round of 256 until the Sweet Sixteen (You can see the full bracket for Division A here). Thus, You Can’t Always Get What You Want, which had the highest first-round average in Divsion A, will play Paranoid, which had the lowest score of Division A’s first-round winners.

We’ll be doing four match-ups a day, instead of the five/six we did last round, so that each Division spans over two days.

You can listen to the match-ups at Grooveshark, and vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com.  Voting remains open until 8pm on Wednesday.

#1 You Can’t Always Get What You Want (Rolling Stones) vs. #16 Paranoid (Black Sabboth)

#8 Changes (David Bowie) vs. #9 Don’t Worry Baby (Beach Boys)  Don’t Worry Baby is a play-in round survivor (2-0).

#4 Such Great Heights (Postal Service) vs. #13 Tired of Being Alone (Al Green)

#5 The Message (Grandmaster Flash) vs. #12 Captain Jack (Billy Joel)  *Feel free to skip the 30 second non-song clip at the end of The Message- couldn’t find the right version.

You Can’t Always Get What You Want (Rolling Stones) 8
    Paranoid (Black Sabbath) 5

    Changes (David Bowie) 6.5
Don’t Worry Baby (Beach Boys) 3
Don’t Worry Baby really grated on me, and I like the Beach Boys… Changes is pretty disjointed, it grabs me, then pushes me away, then grabs me again.

Such Great Heights (Postal Service) 8
Tired of Being Alone (Al Green) 7.5
Tired of Being Alone is more soulful than good. It has some really beautiful parts, but as a whole isn’t tied together. Such Great Heights, on the other hand, doesn’t reach the depths of emotion Al Green can, but is a better all around song.

    The Message (Grandmaster Flash) 8.5
    Captain Jack (Billy Joel) 6
The Message rocks. Captain Jack… is cool I guess, just not as sweet.

  7. Marc says:

#5 The Message (Grandmaster Flash) [6.5]
#12 Captain Jack (Billy Joel) [8]

  9. Adrock says:

You Can’t Always Get What You Want (Rolling Stones) 6
    Paranoid (Black Sabbath) 7.5

Not feeling the Stones today. Weird start to a great set list. Paranoid is always good in my ears… it’s just rarely if ever great.

    Changes (David Bowie) 6
Don’t Worry Baby (Beach Boys) 5.5

Such Great Heights (Postal Service) 6
Tired of Being Alone (Al Green) 5.5

Don’t remember what I gave Postal Service the first time, but it’s growing on me.

    The Message (Grandmaster Flash) 7.5
    Captain Jack (Billy Joel) 9

Terrific finish to a sort of blah middle (no idea why it was an off day for me). I’ve always found Billy Joel very hit or miss… when he’s on, and this song in particular, its happy delirium. When he’s off… disaster ensues. He was on today.

  12. guillermo olivos says:

#1 You Can’t Always Get What You Want (Rolling Stones) 7
    #16 Paranoid (Black Sabboth) 7.5

I think Paranoid was a play-in survivor as well. Regardless, both these songs start at awesome 9’s for me, and then just don’t really end that well. YCAGWYW’s score falls a little slower, but it also falls for an extra 3 minutes.

    #8 Changes (David Bowie) 6.5
    #9 Don’t Worry Baby (Beach Boys) 7.5

Of all bands in this tournament whose success is basically tied to my day-to-day mood, the Beach Boys are the most susceptible.

#4 Such Great Heights (Postal Service) 8
#13 Tired of Being Alone (Al Green) 6.5

I also didn’t think I liked this Postal Service song, but I guess I do?

#5 The Message (Grandmaster Flash) 5.5
#12 Captain Jack (Billy Joel) 5

  13. AdamS says:

  16. adam says:

You Can’t Always Get What You Want (Rolling Stones) vs. Paranoid (Black Sabbath) = 6.5 to 6

Changes (David Bowie) vs. Don’t Worry Baby (Beach Boys) = 9.5 to 3.5

Such Great Heights (Postal Service) vs. Tired of Being Alone (Al Green) = 7.5 to 7.5
Ah jeez, two very different songs. Hard to separate memories of a song that came out in your lifetime vs. a great tune that’s stood the test of time. I can’t decide.

The Message (Grandmaster Flash) vs. Captain Jack (Billy Joel) = 5 to 6.5
Hard to know what ‘The Message” sounded like when it came out, and you had no experience of anything that came after it.

  17. aiko says:

You Can’t Always Get What You Want (Rolling Stones) 7
    Paranoid (Black Sabbath) 5
I’m usually queen of long songs losing my attention, but that Stones songs keeps me with it for a good 6.5 minutes. Paranoid barely does that for less than 3 minutes.

    Changes (David Bowie) 6.5
Don’t Worry Baby (Beach Boys) 7.5

Such Great Heights (Postal Service) 8
Tired of Being Alone (Al Green) 6
My appreciation of Al Green has grown since the years when my first college boyfriend would pretend to dump me due to my dislike of him, but he can still be hit or miss for me. I was prepared to be tired of Such Great Heights, but then it starts playing and you can’t help yourself.

    The Message (Grandmaster Flash) 7.5
    Captain Jack (Billy Joel) 5
Sorry, Billy. You were like the fourth 7 minutes song. My attention span is all used up.

  18. Astrid says:

#8 Changes (David Bowie) 8.5 vs. #9 Don’t Worry Baby (Beach Boys) 7.5

#4 Such Great Heights (Postal Service) 6 vs. #13 Tired of Being Alone (Al Green) 8

#5 The Message (Grandmaster Flash) 8.5 vs. #12 Captain Jack (Billy Joel) 5
