Music Tournament Round of 256: Division G, Day 1 Results

Jimi easily paces this field, and looks to have smooth sailing until the Round of 32.  Two of the match-ups went down to the last voters.

#1 All Along the Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix) def. #16 Sulk (Radiohead), 127-96.  We knew this would happen after Sulk advanced with less than a “6” average last round.

#8 Paranoid Android (Radiohead) def. #9 Ruby Tuesday (Rolling Stones), 111.2-108.8.

#4 With or Without You (U2) def. #13 Jane Says (Jane’s Addiction), 129-112.   U2 has looked awfully flat this round, but looked good here.

#12 New Slang (Shins) def. Good Vibrations (Beach Boys), 120.7-119.  Go Garden State! Shins come back from behind to take this one.

Jane’s Addiction is out of the tournament.

Music Tournament Round of 256: Division H, Day 1

At first glance, there is no song in Division H that can take out Baba ‘O Riley (Who), but the #1 seed earned a couple of mediocre scores in the Round of 512.   Let’s see how much trouble it has with spunky #16 seed, Bat Out of Hell (Meatloaf).  This is Meatloaf’s last stand.

#8 Wonderful World (Sam Cooke) vs. #9 Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds (Beatles).  Hard to believe this is Sam Cooke’s last stand.

#4 You Can Call Me Al (Paul Simon) vs. #13 District Sleeps Alone Tonight (Postal Service).  Sure, Graceland got slaughtered last week, but this is the catchier tune than the title track.

#5  Psycho Killer (Talking Heads) vs.  #12. Basket Case (Green Day).  It’s not clear yet which Heads song will catch fire this tournament, but we do know that Basket Case won’t be going anywhere without a heavy batch of nostalgia.

Listen to all of these match-ups at Grooveshark (except for Lucy in the Sky), and vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com by 8pm on Thursday.

Welcome home, Melo!

After an agonizing several months, Carmelo Anthony is finally a New York Knick.  The blockbuster trade announced earlier tonight sends away four core Knicks- Ray Felton, Wilson Chandler, Danilo Gallinari and Timofey Mozgov.  Chandler and Gallinari, who had great moments growing up in the Knicks system, will be especially missed, but at least Chandler was likely to leave after this season anyway.

In return, the Knicks acquired Melo, the man apparently still called “Mr. Big Shot”, Chauncey Billups, and an assortment of scrubs.  But no matter.  Amare Stoudamire is a superstar, and his arrival has electrified the Garden this year.  Melo is a superstar on that level, and having them both on the floor at the same time  will lead to match-up nightmares for their opponents.

Carmelo Anthony was born in Brooklyn and raised in Baltimore.  Many New Yorkers were rooting for him in 2003, when he lead Syracuse to the national championship as a freshman.

That year I proposed that the international community name Anthony to head the nation of Belarus’s interim government after we removed corrupt Dictator/President Lukashenka from power.

Here’s to many good days ahead draining shots and firing up the crowd at the World’s Most Famous Arena.

Music Tournament Round of 256: Division G, Day 2

The second half of Division G features a wide open bracket, including Guillermo’s pet choice, Night Moves. If you look at Seger’s pic on the left, you can pretty much see Guillermo in 30 years.

We have five artists facing elimination today:  No Doubt, Bob Seger, Ice Cube, the Supremes and Mumford & Sons.

Music Tournament Round of 256: Division F, Day 2 Results

Votes were especially low on the swing day of the holiday weekend, but these match-ups were pretty straightforward.

We are two wins away from Cash v. Cash, the first intra-artist showdown of the music tournament.  That means you can put good money down that Cash is the first artist with a guaranteed ride to the Round of 32.

#2 Hurt (Johnny Cash) def. #15 I Held Her In My Arms (Violent Femmes), 97-73.

#7 Where the Streets Have No Name (U2) def. #10 Voodoo Chile (Jimi Hendrix) , 83-75.

#3 Folsom Prison Blues (Johnny Cash) def. I’m A Believer (Monkees), 89-76.

#11 Jack and Diane (John Cougar Mellancamp) def.  #6 Alive (Pearl Jam), 89-66.  Pearl Jam has two songs left.

Violent Femmes are out of the tournament.  The Monkees are out of the tournament. So far 158 artists have been eliminated since the tournament officially began.

Round of 256: Division F, Day 1 Results

(Note from Guillermo: I could have sworn I published this last night, but that’s clearly not the case. My bad.) Division F, Day 1 put on one of the more impressive shows we’ve seen so far.  Every song posted a very respectable score, as three legends bit the dust.  The Weight made the Wall of Tens, getting the top nod from Aiko and G.

#1 The Weight (The Band) def. #16 Wonderwall (Oasis), 102.5-97.75 . Kudos to Oasis for really battling this one out.

#9 Come On Eileen (Dexy’s Midnight Runners) def #8 Tonight, Tonight (Smashing Pumpkins), 100.75-95.5.  Come on Eileen will be a legitimate hurdle in The Weight’s march to the Sweet Sixteen.

#4 Over The Hills and Far Away (Led Zeppelin) def. #13 Rock And Roll (Velvet Underground),  89.75-84.6 .

#5 Suspicious Minds (Elvis Presley) def. #12 Busted (Ray Charles), 99.5-88.2.   When people are feeling Elvis, he’s tough to beat.

The Velvet Underground is out of the tournament, but Lou Reed lives on through Walk on the Wild Side.  Oasis is out of the tournament.

Round of 256: Division G, Day 1

Happy bonus Sunday.  I’ll be taking us through Divisions G, H and I.  Division G is anchored by my choice for “Best Cover of All-Time”, with Jimi’s smoking version of All Along the Watchtower.    Today features two out of the remaining four Radiohead songs, and I know some people have knives out for them. Meanwhile, the Shins and Jane’s Addiction face elimination.

Listed at Grooveshark here, and vote by commenting below or emailing Ltddotorg@gmail.com by 8pm Tuesday.

#1 All Along the Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix) vs. #16 Sulk (Radiohead)

#4 With or Without You (U2) vs. #13 Jane Says (Jane’s Addiction)

#5 Good Vibrations (Beach Boys) vs. #12 New Slang (Shins)

#8 Paranoid Android (Radiohead) vs. Ruby Tuesday (Rolling Stones)

LTDMT Round of 256: Division E, Day 2 Results

Post image for Queen – Bohemian RhapsodyNo upsets for anyone here- all top seeds advance, and generally with large margins. Not too many voters for this round, but I can’t complain because I ran out of time to vote myself. On to results:

Stairway To Heaven over Ruby Soho, 87-71.5.

Seven Nation Army eliminates Tennessee and Arrested Development from the tournament, 83.5-67.5.

Bohemian Rhapsody posts the high score for the day over Graceland, 90.5-73.

Last, the Beatles continue their dominance as In My Life takes Burning Down The House 78-72.55 (the more liberties we take with the tenths and hundredths places of our scores, the less likely we have ties, so I’m always a fan of scores like that.)

LTDMT: Round of 256, Division F, Day 2

Couple different storylines here. Can Johnny Cash’s 2, 3 seed in Division F hold off the upstarts? Can U2 get their act together and pick up their first win in the 256 after starting 0-2? Which song will switch your opinion from appreciation to annoyance the quickest, Alive or Jack and Diane? At any rate, a lot going on to close out Division F. Last stands for Violent Femmes, Monkees, and John Cougar Mellancamp. Grooveshark link is here, comment to vote or e-mail LTDdotorg@gmail.com. Nos is back in the driver’s seat for G, H, and I, votes due by Monday night at 8 pm.

#2 Hurt (Johnny Cash) vs. #15 I Held Her In My Arms (Violent Femmes)

#7 Where The Streets Have No Name (U2) vs. #10 Voodoo Child (Jimi Hendrix)

#3 Folsom Prison Blues (Johnny Cash) vs. #14 I’m A Believer (Monkees)

#6 Alive (Pearl Jam) vs. #11 Jack and Diane (John Cougar Mellancamp)

LTDMT: Division E, Day 1 Results

Sitting in a Starbucks in Tysons Corner, VA (land of lovely tall, non-Metro accessible central offices) and still got 30 minutes before I have to do things…so sneaking in the results on time. Upset of the day, if you can consider it an upset, was Won’t Get Fooled Again (13 seed) taking down Break On Through (4 seed), 143.7-139.7. No more hello, I love you’s for The Doors- they take a surprising tournament exit in the 2nd round.

Beat It got the high score for the day with 145.15 points over Paper Planes’ 122.8.

We Didn’t Start The Fire talked fast, lived hard, and sent Maggie May out of the tournament, 143.85-134.65.

Finally, Here Comes The Sun beat up on Barry White, 141.95-118.7. I should note that whereas the other three match-ups had 18 voters, this one only had 17 because Danno didn’t submit votes for these guys in his comment. So really, Here Comes The Sun probably would have been the high scorer.

Annnnd all four losers are out. M.I.A. The Doors (0-2 in 256). Rod Stewart. And Barry White. Quite the quartet pushing through the exit doors at the same time, but the show goes on.
