Music Tournament Round of 32: Division I, J, K and L Results

First of all, my apologies to Mr. Petty.  He was not eliminated yesterday.  In fact, he pulled off a major upset, shellacking A Day in the Life.

Second, there was not one especially close match-up today (Van had a sneaky little run at the end), which is a bit odd, given how late in the game we are.  As Guillermo has discussed before, part of what it takes to win a tournament is repeat listenability, and the bottom has simply fallen out for some of today’s losers.   Now, on to the results. Music Tournament Round of 32: Division E, F, G and H Results

Tonight we honor our second round of Division Champions.  The high score of the day goes to Baba O’Riley, but all four winners today were highly impressive, and could contend to go all the way.

Songs joining the illustrious Wall of 10s include All Along the Watchtower (Dr. J, Catholic), Bohemian Rhapsody (Dr.J, Catholic), Thunder Road (MarkO, Guillermo, Janos), Hurt (Danno, Ogden) and The Weight (Grant, Guillermo).  While some friends/couples have been known to post similar votes, I want to clarify that Dr.J and Catholic have never met, though I’m sure they’d get along. Music Tournament Round of 32: Division A, B, C and D Results

Congratulations, all of you!  With 25 voters for this set of match ups, we have set a high for the tournament.

Once upon a time there were sixteen divisions, and each division had thirty two songs.   During those cold December days, it seemed that crowning a champion was unimaginably far away.  Now spring has sprung, and champions are on the horizon.   Winning the Music Tournament will be an epic accomplishment, but no matter what happens in the rounds ahead, we salute our Division Champions. Song Averages Cheatsheet

Here are all the songs still alive in order. Remember, only 80% of their seeding fate has been determined, but this gives in the least a snapshot of what’s going on and how a song that wins its championship will land in the seeding of the Sweetest Sixteen… Continue reading

Music Trivia from Ken Jennings

Ever since reading Brainiac, I’ve subscribed to 74-time Jeopardy! winner Ken Jenning’s weekly trivia mailer.  Of the seven questions, I’ve been averaging a healthy 2.3 answers per week.  I thought I’d throw this week’s Question #7 (designed to be the hardest) to our voter base.

7. What unusual distinction is shared by these songs? Counting Crows’ “Mr. Jones,” Cream’s “White Room,” Kermit the Frog’s “It’s Not Easy Being Green,” Alanis Morrisette’s “Hand in My Pocket,” Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy,” Radiohead’s “Karma Police,” Simon and Garfunkel’s “America,” Suzanne Vega’s “Tom’s Diner.”

Five of the eight songs were in the tournament, so let’s see if we can figure this one out.
