Adrock and I are both Triple H fans, so you’ll have to excuse the atrocious attempt to open our podcast with Motorhead’s “Time to Play the Game.” Rest assured, it will not be in the Peoples’ Choice Tournament. Other than that, an absolutely fine New York-Beantown connection. Listen here (Podcast with Adrock) as Adrock and I cover all the modern day essentials, including:
1. Are NBA players sentimental fools like the rest of us, and is that the reason for the demise of the Lakers and the Celtics? Or are they just getting old, like the rest of us?
2. Marathon Day, friend or foe? Adrock is one of ten people to have successfully completed the feat.
3. Peoples’ Choice Tournament nominations- I reveal my list for the first time.

Happy Monday! To kick off the week, we’ve got a Music Monday podcast conversation among Guillermo and regular Gold Tier LTD voters Jacob (went by Cochese/Marconi/Blind Boy Grunt/Fanny), Aiko (went by Aiko) and Grant (went by G/sweetems.) Listen as for the first time we hear the voices of other regular members of our musical democracy and let them take the conversation where they please. We discuss, among other things, our potential (and Guillermo’s actual) People’s Choice Tournament nominations, Jacob’s 8th birthday present from his grandmother, the merits of Dusty In Memphis, the Trainspotting soundtrack, how a Churchill Downs crowd reacted to one Violent Femmes concert, the difference between a .wav and an .mp3 file, and the fickleness of Russian classical music criticism to Tchaikovsky in the late 1800s. You know we always keep it interesting at Living The Dream. Podcast 3: With Aiko, Jacob and Grant.
Michelle Young, founder of UnTapped Cities, has built a dynamic set of sites exploring the lesser-known gems of some of the world’s great cities, including New York. Michelle and I did a fun interview last week about the past, present and future of Marathon Day- check it out. As you’ll see, Michelle’s site has killer photography and all kinds of behind the scenes looks at New York- definitely a blog to add to your rotation.
Kittens Ablaze, one of our favorite bands here at Living the Dream, has followed up their critically acclaimed debut album, The Monstrous Vanguard, with a new EP, Branches. You can listen to and download the five new tracks here. I’m partial to the title track, myself.
The band played a record release show at their go-to venue, Mercury Lounge in Manhattan. I reprised my role as MC and led the crowd in a chant against Prince William and the restoration of the British monarchy.
Marathon Day, an event truly like any other, is a mere nine days away. Now in its fourth year, Marathon Day is a 26.2 drink trip through New York City’s five boroughs. It’s an opportunity to explore some of the city’s finest neighborhoods with an all-star hang-out crew. This post will be the first of four posts taking you through the epic day. Continue reading

Exciting announcement! We have tabulated the total songs to which voters gave scores and are ready to announce the tiers of the Gold, Silver, and Bronze voters!!! So to clarify- based on the total number of songs through the Living the Dream Music Tournament for which you cast a vote, you will get a certain number of nominations for the PCT!
Remember, submit your nominations to LTDdotorg@gmail.com by May 25th. We will post songs that are nominated as we receive them in the forthcoming People’s Choice Tournament section of the page. However, we can say that we have already received our very first nomination- Neil Young’s “After The Gold Rush” is in. And now, the tiers… Continue reading
Living the Dream favorite Midnight Spin will be rocking out Brooklyn Bowl this Saturday, playing Who’s Next in its entirety for album night.
In this podcast with Mike and Danny, we catch up on what the last year’s been like for one of Brooklyn’s hottest bands, and find time to chat about the music industry, hipsters, the Peoples’ Choice Tournament and of course, the NBA Playoffs.
For the last three years, Fordham Law students have been traveling out to Rikers Island to work with incarcerated juveniles.
These boys are 16-18 years old, and many are charged with serious crimes. They are also smart, witty, and in some cases, ready to be intellectually engaged.
The program theoretically involves the law students conducting legal workshops, but I’ve always told participants that it’s a two-way street: we tell the juveniles how the law is supposed to work, and they tell us how it really operates on the street. The five-week programs, which run twice a year, culminate in an exciting mock trial where the juveniles play the prosecution, defense and jury.
This year’s Fordham group, a particularly committed bunch, has put together a video to secure funding from the ABA (American Bar Association) Good Works Project. The goal is to secure funding for the juvenile’s law library. Check it out to hear what student volunteers have to say about the program.
I wish we had pictures to post here, but cameras are obviously not permitted on Rikers.
If you want to get involved in the program, we’ll be revamping the program over the summer, and looking for ways to incorporate people of all professional backgrounds. If you are interested in volunteering this fall, or would simply like to learn more about what we’re doing, email LTDdotorg@gmail.com.
