Last Band Standing: Trouble in the heartland for Bruce, Led Zeppelin goes for title in Game 5

Great turnout tonight, all.  Welcome, to our new voters, and great job coaches- three of these battles went down to the wire and caused me extra late night work flipping storylines.  But here’s the big question – can Led Zeppelin win the Last Band Standing championship with Fool in the Rain?  Listen here and vote by commenting before midnight on Friday.

Game 4 Results

Black Dog (Led Zeppelin) def. Badlands (live) (Bruce Springsteen), 169.2-166.2 .    Led Zeppelin surged late to take a 3-1 series lead.  Back to back nail-biters for the Boss.

Mrs. Robinson (live) (Paul Simon) def. Isn’t She Lovely (Stevie Wonder), 148.7-146.1.   This one flipped multiple times.  Simon pulls the series even at 2-2. Continue reading

Last Band Standing: Zeppelin seizes comeback Game 3 win

A lot of our coaches dumped their ho-hum stuff over the weekend, but we have some great tunes going tonight.  Listen here, and vote by commenting below before midnight on Wednesday.  Also, just wanted to note that my indoor soccer team pulled off a huge upset, toppling the #1 seed in the Lawyers League soccer play-offs.

Game 3 Results

When the Levee Breaks (Led Zeppelin) def. Born in the USA (Bruce Springsteen), 122.9-122.7.  Thanks to Gmo for catching my tabulation error- my spreadsheet is at the office, and my mental math skills have declined since their glory days of the early 90s.   Led Zeppelin now leads 2-1 in the series after a fierce Monday evening comeback.

Graceland (Paul Simon) def. Big Brother (Stevie Wonder), 110-90.5.   Stevie Wonder still leads the series 2-1.    Continue reading

HCS (I, 9): What We Found In Waveland

N8 and Andre 6500 (yes, these are all real people. The best, really.)

“In 99% of situations, people wanting credit for things gets in the way of progress. And how much sense does that make?”
-N8, November 2005

“N8” had been around camp since I’d gotten there, but had one of those personalities that is hard to nail down and even harder to approach— thus, he and I had a loose camaraderie for my first month. He always had big aviators. He was white, originally from Minnesota but most recently from Seattle, incredibly skinny, and yet always had the most energy of anyone on crew. He had been on my first job site and I remember him stalking around Candace’s home with a stout wrecking bar, pointing people around and confidently punching spots in the drywall to make it fall in one piece (a perfect drop, and much more efficient than taking it out chunk by awkward chunk.) He was always smiling at you, making jokes that he didn’t care if you got or not. He wasn’t always on interiors though. He had good communication with Dave, Dingo, and Scuba, and took days off to do who knows what.

Jane, always the wise one, relayed this story to me one day: “So Cora and I were sitting next to N8 at breakfast yesterday, and…” Continue reading

Last Band Standing: Bruce knots series at 1; slugfest set for Game 3

And don't you forget it, sheriff.

Everyone’s doing a great job nominating so far.   For games 3-5 the nominating and listening order (“home field advantage”) reverse.

Listen to Game 3 here and vote by commenting before close of business (10pm EST) on Monday.

Game 2 Results

Born to Run (Bruce Springsteen) def. Dazed and Confused (Led Zeppelin), 130-117.   The series is even at 1.  Coach Adrock declared, “Time to go for it,” nominating When the Levee Breaks. Unfazed, Gmo threw back an anthem of his own…

Sir Duke (Stevie Wonder) def. Me and Julio Down By The Schoolyard (Paul Simon), 122-107.  Stevie is in control of the series right now, up 2-0, and Ilya calls on one of the classics.

If You Want Blood (AC DC) def. Going Mobile (Who), 116-106.   AC DC ties the series at 1-1.  Game 3 looks promising.

Waiting for the Man (Velvet Underground) def. Atmosphere (Joy Division), 98-83.   Most voters aren’t warming to this match-up yet, and things are about to get weirder. Continue reading

Last Band Standing: Led Zeppelin takes 1-0 lead – Gmo turns to ace

Our long-awaited championship round is underway, with contenders lurking around the corner.   Listen to Game 2 match-ups here and vote by commenting before midnight on Friday.   And read Guillermo’s Hurricane Camp stories on the site right now- late fall of 2005 includes many of my favorite stories from that era.

Results from Game 1

Rock and Roll (Led Zeppelin) def.  Jungeland (Bruce Springsteen),  99-90 .    Gmo swung for the fences this epic, and while voters were respectful, they went with Led Zeppelin.  That left Dr. G with no choice but to turn to the Boss’s most decorated anthem, which once knocked “Don’t Stop Believin'” out of the LTD music tournament. HCS (I, 8): Team Hope

Team Hope

“Mold eats souls”
-Mark Deubert, January 2006

Soon after Tarp Crew started, I caught up with Jane and Cora.

“So, Will, have you heard about Team Hope?”

“I most certainly have not.”

“What do you know about…” Jane paused, and smiled. “…mold remediation?” Continue reading

Last Band Standing: Championship Round

I would like this t-shirt as a present. Research the current wars and this shirt will make sense.

In about a week, we’ll be ready to crown a champion.  Then that champ will have to turn around and face a new #1 contender.  All the while, undercards rise through the ranks.  That is Last Band Standing.  Listen to an eclectic set of match-ups here, and vote by commenting below before 10pm (EST) on Wednesday.

Last Band Standing Championship

Rock and Roll (Led Zeppelin) vs. Jungleland (Bruce Springsteen)

#1 Contender Match

Think Too Much (Paul Simon) vs. My Cherie Amour (Stevie Wonder)

Undercards

It’s a Long Way to the Top (AC DC) vs. Baba O’Riley (Who)

Bizarre Love Triangle (Joy Division/New Order)* vs. What Goes On (Velvet Underground)

* A panel of former coaches determined that New Order and Joy  Division were sufficiently linked as a band to allow either’s song for tournament purposes.

Last Band Standing: Farewells and Futures

Get ready for another Thrilla in ManilaThis weekend saw the departure of four bands and the coaches who went to battle for them.

Dancing in the Dark (Bruce Springsteen) defeated Train in Vain (Clash), 97-88.5, to take the series 4-1.  Cristina used a lot of ammo in beating the Stones last round.    Meanwhile,  Gmo had to use a few gems to win this round, but still has some go-tos left for the finals.

Stairway to Heaven (Led Zeppelin) defeated Starman (David Bowie), 121-96.    Adrock recognized that Starman is a pretty great song (though not all voters agreed), and went to  his knockout punch, taking the series 4-1.    Adrock also has some top songs left for the finals showdown with Bruce.

You Can Call Me Al (Paul Simon) defeated Silver Springs (live) (Fleetwood Mac), 113-104, taking the series 4-2.    This was a very even series.   Ilya will now have to marshal his remaining songs against Stevie Wonder.

Signed, Sealed, Delivered (Stevie Wonder) defeated Come Alive (Foo Fighters), 110.5-76.5 to close out the series, 4-2.   Jacob had to resort to some well-known Stevie fare to take out the pesky Fighters, who had won the last two games.

A big thank you to Cristina, Grant, Astrid and Mark B for their coaching.

Coming up next week we’ll have Springsteen (Gmo) vs. Led Zeppelin (Adrock) for the Last Band Standing Title.

Paul Simon (Ilya) will take on Stevie Wonder (Jacob) in a #1 contender match.

AC DC (Joe) will challenge The Who (Salem) in the first undercard, and the Velvet Underground (Peter) will battle Joy Division (Jenn) in the second undercard.

Great music ahead.

Last Band Standing: Endgame

Bonus points for identifying source of photo.

I hope everyone is fine with me using random themes for each set of match-ups, as opposed to my usual, “Round 3, Day 4” stylings.  It’s partially based on quest to re-watch The Wire.  Maybe I’ll start with a quote too.    Click here for the next set of songs, which, by the way, are amazing, and vote by commenting below before midnight on Saturday.    And now, your results:

My City in Ruin (Bruce Springsteen) def. Charlie Don’t Surf (Clash), 111-109.5. Bruce Springsteen now leads the series 3-1 after a razor tight win.

Houses of the Holy (Led Zeppelin) def. Move On (David Bowie), 109-98.   Led Zeppelin now leads the series 3-1.   Look below for a fantabulous Game 6 match-up ahead.

Landslide (Fleetwood Mac) def. Gumboots (Paul Simon), 131-90.   Paul Simon still leads the series, 3-2 after getting thumped in Game 5.

Times Like These (Foo Fighters) def. Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing (Stevie Wonder), 103-100.  The Foo Fighters have staved off elimination twice, but Press is going to one of the big dogs for Game 6.

New Set

Dancing in the Dark (Bruce Springsteen) vs. Train in Vain (Clash)

Stairway to Heaven (Led Zeppelin) vs. Starman (David Bowie)

Silver Springs (live) (Fleetwood Mac) vs. You Can Call Me Al (Paul Simon)

Come Alive (Foo Fighters) vs. Signed, Sealed, Delivered (Stevie Wonder)
