PCT II: Round of 128, Day 15

City and Colour makes a People’s Choice appearance two years in a row

Penultimate is one of those words that I think you should use at every possible opportunity. That said, may I present the penultimate day of match-ups in the Round of 128. Playlist is here except for “Fleeting Like The Days” (will link below as well) and votes due by Thursday, September 20th at 8:00 PM EST.

Thinkin’ Bout Something (Hanson) vs. Four Night Rider (Rural Alberta Advantage)

Sleeping Sickness (City and Colour) vs. Babylon (David Grey)

Machu Picchu (The Strokes) vs. Classy Girls (The Lumineers)

Little Bit of Everything (Dawes) vs. Fleeting Like The Days (Cahalen Morrision and Eli West)

About g-mo

The day I was born, Michael Jackson's Thriller album was at the top of the Billboard 200. I've been trying my best to live up to that expectation ever since.

sad. pretty. long. meh. not my favorite dawes.
Fleeting Like The Days (Cahalen Morrision and Eli West) – 10
these guys, to me, are musical perfection. they are making some of the best music i’ve heard, well, ever. the song-writing is spot on. the harmonies are perfect. the picking is full and intricate, without being unncessarily showy or losing structure. the sound is rich and layered while remaining simple and accessible. it is rooted in old-time/bluegrass tradition and sounds completely fresh. i’m obsessed. i rarely go a day without listening to this album or their second album they just released, and this is one of my favorite songs. i have no idea how this will fare in the tournament. they’ve got rave reviews all over the internet, so i’m assuming that anyone that likes acoustic music will appreciate this at some level. and if you like it, go listen to more of their stuff. you will not be disappointed.

Thinkin’ Bout Something (Hanson) vs. Four Night Rider (Rural Alberta Advantage) = 7 to 4
Hanson write’s good pop songs, no question about that. Way more fun and better than 90% of the crap on the radio.

Sleeping Sickness (City and Colour) vs. Babylon (David Grey) = 2.5 to 3

Machu Picchu (The Strokes) vs. Classy Girls (The Lumineers) = 5 to 5.5

Little Bit of Everything (Dawes) vs. Fleeting Like The Days (Cahalen Morrision and Eli West) = 7 to 4.5
This Dawes song kind of freaked me out.

I wanted to hate this Dawes song, but it’s got a hold on me today. You win this round (with me at least) SoCal.

  8. Mark B says:

    Thinkin’ Bout Something (Hanson) 5
Four Night Rider (Rural Alberta Advantage) 6
Whoah. People on here really dig Hanson, huh? I’m a sucker for pop hooks but I don’t think this is a particularly good one. The other song is much more memorable for me.

Sleeping Sickness (City and Colour) 10
    Babylon (David Grey) 7
I absolutely adore Sleeping Sickness in all its shiny melancholy. Babylon is solid though, and so much more well known, so I worry that’ll mean that Sleeping Sickness won’t make it through the first round which is a massive shame.

    Machu Picchu (The Strokes) 5.5
    Classy Girls (The Lumineers) 7

Little Bit of Everything (Dawes) 9
Fleeting Like The Days (Cahalen Morrision and Eli West) 5
I really loved Little Bit of Everything (except maybe the lyric about the mashed potatoes…?) and had never heard it before. Thanks, nominator.

  9. Eileen says:

Little Bit of Everything (Dawes) vs. Fleeting Like The Days (Cahalen Morrision and Eli West) 6.5 vs 5.0

  10. Daddy-O says:

Thinkin’ Bout Something (Hanson) vs. Four Night Rider (Rural Alberta Advantage) 6.0 vs 4.0 May not be great pop but surpasses the tweet thru the woods.

Sleeping Sickness (City and Colour) vs. Babylon (David Grey) 4.5 vs 7.0 Snore along with me!

Machu Picchu (The Strokes) vs. Classy Girls (The Lumineers) 5.5 vs 5.0

Little Bit of Everything (Dawes) vs. Fleeting Like The Days (Cahalen Morrision and Eli West) 5.5 vs 4.5

There are some songs I love in this round.
Thinkin’ Bout Something (Hanson) vs. Four Night Rider (Rural Alberta Advantage): 8.25/6

Sleeping Sickness (City and Colour) vs. Babylon (David Grey): 6.5/5.5

Machu Picchu (The Strokes) vs. Classy Girls (The Lumineers): 7/5.75

Little Bit of Everything (Dawes) vs. Fleeting Like The Days (Cahalen Morrision and Eli West): 5.5/5.5
I’m not really sure what I think of either of these yet.

  13. Greg says:

    Thinkin’ Bout Something (Hanson): 7.5
Four Night Rider (Rural Alberta Advantage): 5.5

I never would have thought that I would like a Hanson song. When those horns kicked in I was sold. Let’s hear it for a pretty solid pop song.

Sleeping Sickness (City and Colour): 7
    Babylon (David Grey): 6.5

    Machu Picchu (The Strokes): 6
    Classy Girls (The Lumineers): 8

Classy Girls started a bit slow, but built nicely. The more I hear from The Lumineers the more I enjoy.

Little Bit of Everything (Dawes): 8
Fleeting Like The Days (Cahalen Morrision and Eli West): 6.5

Little Bit of Everything hit all the right notes, it touched on some good topics and put a smile on my face. What more can you ask from a song? I feel as though Fleeting Like The Days would grow on me the more I hear it, the lyrics were really good, but right now this round goes to Dawes.
