After Day 13 really took us out there, Day 14 is mostly a return to rock and roll, from indie favorites to radio songs of days past. You can listen here and vote by commenting below before 8pm EST on Wednesday.

Someone Great (LCD Soundsystem) 4
All For You (Sister Hazel) 7.5

Vomit (Girls) 7
vs. Johnny Come Lately (Steve Earle) 5
Bellbottoms (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) 6
vs. Someone Great (LCD Soundsystem) 7
All For You (Sister Hazel) 2
vs. American Skin (Bruce Springsteen) 3
Your Love (The Outfield) 6
vs. Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want (Smiths) 5
Vomit (Girls) 10
vs. Johnny Come Lately (Steve Earle) 3.5
Vomit is not my nomination but I do wish I’d thought of it – I ended up seeing Girls a few times in the last year: that sealed the deal on them for me…SO GOOD. This song live blew my mind – it’s like a mini epic. JCL is just not written for me to love.
Bellbottoms (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) 4
vs. Someone Great (LCD Soundsystem) 6.5
All For You (Sister Hazel) 8.5
vs. American Skin (Bruce Springsteen) 5
Your Love (The Outfield) 8
vs. Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want (Smiths) 7
They played Your Love at our 80s theme grad school formal (remember that, Guillermo?) and everyone went completely apeshit. It was ridiculous and amazing.
Vomit (Girls) 7.8
Johnny Come Lately (Steve Earle) 8.9
Bellbottoms (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) 8
Someone Great (LCD Soundsystem) 9
All For You (Sister Hazel) 9.2
American Skin (Bruce Springsteen) 7
Your Love (The Outfield) 7
Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want (Smiths) 8
I’m voting today in a super bummed out mood, so let’s see what resonates…
Vomit (Girls) vs. Johnny Come Lately (Steve Earle): 8 : 7
Vomit grew on me as it went along.
Bellbottoms (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) vs. Someone Great (LCD Soundsystem): 5.5 : 9.5
JSBE was one of the only 90s indie rock acts that I never took a spin with, unfortunately. I mean honestly, what’s going on in this song? Someone Great has sad, beautiful lyrics to go with atypically mellow music (for LCD).
All For You (Sister Hazel) vs. American Skin (Bruce Springsteen): 8.5 : 8
Love Bruce and the content of this song. All For You takes me back to New Town Pizza on 78th and Broadway, 1997.
Your Love (The Outfield) vs. Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want (Smiths): 6 : 7
There’s a time and place for 80s parties (though there’s always an exception for Africa). We’ve yet to see a tournament run from the Smiths/Morrissey.
Vomit (Girls) vs. Johnny Come Lately (Steve Earle) = 7.5 to 6.5
two good tunes!
Bellbottoms (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) vs. Someone Great (LCD Soundsystem) = 6.5 to 9
Bellbottoms is groovy but unfortunately this is the only LCD soundsystem song i like
All For You (Sister Hazel) vs. American Skin (Bruce Springsteen) = 2 to 7.5
Your Love (The Outfield) vs. Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want (Smiths) = 9 to 9
I can’t decide. Sorry, lame, I know.
7- Vomit (Girls) vs.
5- Johnny Come Lately (Steve Earle)
How did I forget about Girls already. I’m awake. Loved it. Just couldn’t get into Steve Earle after Girls.
10- Bellbottoms (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) vs.
6- Someone Great (LCD Soundsystem)
This song is a mix of nostalgia, sweat, and rock and roll. It’s unfortunate JSBX is up against LCD Soundsystem, fortunately, Someone Great is not my favorite song of theirs so I don’t feel nearly as bad. I’ve probably seen the Blues Explosion as many times as anyone else. Janos, if you’re ever interested in a spin. I’ve got your hookup.
8- All For You (Sister Hazel) vs.
8- American Skin (Bruce Springsteen)
The first Bruce song of the tournament that really got me going but couldn’t resist the 90’s-rific Sister Hazel. It’s no Run Around by Blues Traveler, but as James Cromwell would say “that’ll do pig. that’ll do.”
9- Your Love (The Outfield) vs.
9- Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want (Smiths)
I feel like this Smith’s song is one of those that has too much power to be in this tournament. That said. This is one of my favorite pairings and pair of songs in the tournament.
This may end up being my favorite branch of the first round.
Vomit (Girls) vs. Johnny Come Lately (Steve Earle) 3.5 vs 5.5
Bellbottoms (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) vs. Someone Great (LCD Soundsystem) 4.0 vs 4.5
All For You (Sister Hazel) vs. American Skin (Bruce Springsteen) 7.5 vs 6.0
Your Love (The Outfield) vs. Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want (Smiths) 5.5 vs 7.0
P.S. Our votes for Day 13 ended up with the summary comments for Days 9-12. IF they weren’t counted, no biggy as they certainly would not have made any difference.
I moved them over, you can see it if you look at the comments on Day 13. And counted ’em.
Vomit (Girls) vs. Johnny Come Lately (Steve Earle) 4.5 vs 5.5
Bellbottoms (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) vs. Someone Great (LCD Soundsystem) 4.5 vs 5.0
All For You (Sister Hazel) vs. American Skin (Bruce Springsteen) 7.0 vs 6.5
Your Love (The Outfield) vs. Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want (Smiths) 5.0 vs 6.0
Vomit (Girls) 6
Johnny Come Lately (Steve Earle) 8.8
Another of my nominations in trouble. Well for those of you with an inkling of country openness, Steve Earle is really fun live; saw him of all places at Whalley Park in New Haven (this is not a big space, it’s a random field near East Rock) in August 2008 for $10. His contribution to The Wire as Bubbles’ NA Sponsor notwithstanding, this dude has a really cool story, including running away from home to follow Townes Van Zandt around Texas when he was a pre-teen. TVZ and SE eventually became great friends- Van Zandt was a big mentor to Earle, so much so that Steve gave his son the middle name “Townes.” Oh yeah, Justin Townes Earle (“Mama’s Eyes” from last week) is Steve Earle’s son, fun fact. Anyways, this isn’t Steve’s most acclaimed song or even on any Top 10 lists, but it’s fun and about bringing women back home, dig.
Bellbottoms (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) 8
Someone Great (LCD Soundsystem) 7.3
Heard neither before, really liked JSBE. SG was a little too intergalactic for walking the dog at 7:45.
All For You (Sister Hazel) 7.9
American Skin (Bruce Springsteen) 7.6
Little Bruce-d out after last Friday (which rocked.)
Your Love (The Outfield) 10
Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want (Smiths) 6.4
Mark B- my greatest contribution to the SOM experience as it relates to my 2 years of service as a Student Government General Representative was being in charge of making the playlist for the Fall 2009 80’s Prom. That was a win for the ages, and Your Love was a win of the win.
Vomit (Girls) 6
Johnny Come Lately (Steve Earle) 7.5
Bellbottoms (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) 8
Someone Great (LCD Soundsystem) 6
All For You (Sister Hazel) 3
American Skin (Bruce Springsteen) 7
Your Love (The Outfield) 5
Please Please Let Me Get What I Want (The Smiths) 9
I love the Smiths
Vomit (Girls) – 4
Johnny Come Lately (Steve Earle) – 7
Bellbottoms (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) – 3.5
i’m feeling super ADD today, and you’d think this song would be good in that situation, but it was kind of overwhelming, i couldn’t keep up with it
Someone Great (LCD Soundsystem) – 6.5
lost 0.5 for not ending after 5 min
All For You (Sister Hazel) – 4
American Skin (Bruce Springsteen) – 3
again… the ADD thing… not working so well with these exceptionally long songs today… i wasn’t going to love this song anyway, though
Your Love (The Outfield) – 8.5
Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want (Smiths) – 5
ha, go figure, after complaining about song length, i felt this one was lacking…
