All future nominations are closed, so we are down to 6 very unique acts still alive in our Last Band Standing match. This will be the last one-on-one battle of this tournament, as our Final will be a Three-way Royal Rumble among the three survivors (more on that later.) For now, votes are due by Saturday, May 5th at Midnight EST. Get your friends to vote, as this 6 song set shouldn’t be too taxing for anyone’s schedule and there are some great tunes below. Let’s do this.
Penultimate Round- Game 1
The Jack (AC/DC) vs. Bring It On Home (Led Zeppelin)
I Can Hear Music (The Beach Boys) vs. The Last To Say (Atmosphere)
Just Ain’t Easy (Allman Brothers Band) vs. Vertigo (U2)
The Jack (AC/DC) 6
Bring It On Home (Led Zeppelin)5.5
Close, but ACDC edges it simply because the intro of bring it on home is too long.
I Can Hear Music (The Beach Boys) 5
The Last To Say (Atmosphere) 4.5
Another close one, but I have to give to to BB
Just Ain’t Easy (Allman Brothers Band) Lots of naked dudes on the youtube video…
Vertigo (U2) UNO! DOS! TRES! CATORCE!! Wait…What? Bono no habla espanol…
The Jack (AC/DC) vs. Bring It On Home (Led Zeppelin) 6 – 6
I Can Hear Music (The Beach Boys) vs. The Last To Say (Atmosphere) 5 – 6
Just Ain’t Easy (Allman Brothers Band) vs. Vertigo (U2) 4 – 8
The Jack 8
Bring It On Home 6
“Prevention
Not having sexual intercourse (abstinence) is the only absolute method of preventing gonorrhea. A monogamous sexual relationship with an individual known to be free of any STD can reduce risk. Monogamous means you and your partner do not have sex with any other persons.”
I Can Hear Music 7
The Last To Say 7.6
If you use the LTD search function you can go back and look at my terrible scores for I Can Hear Music (and Wouldn’t It Be Nice) from January of 2011. The thing about music tournaments is that it is completely dependent on your current mood. At that point in time I was unemployed and had just been blown off by this yogi girl I’d made out with. I’d bought all this food to cook her dinner and ended up eating it by myself with my dog. These days, I am satisfactorily employed and comfortable with my perennial bachelorhood as it lends itself to continual noteworthy misadventures. All of that said, this Atmosphere song is awesome.
Just Ain’t Easy: 6.7
Vertigo: 6.9
U2 is pretty deep. This wasn’t as much my cup of tea as earlier stuff, but still above Allman.
The Jack (AC/DC): 6
Bring It On Home (Led Zeppelin): 8
I like the blues rock coming out of AC/DC here, a lot more mellow than most of their other music. Plus, who sings songs about STD’s? Bring It On Home is another solid Led Zeppelin jam, their catalog is just absolutely massive and so many good songs are left to be used. This song does start a bit slow, but once Jimmy Page kicks it into first gear Bring It On Home just puts The Jack to shame.
I Can Hear Music (The Beach Boys): X
The Last To Say (Atmosphere): X
Just Ain’t Easy (Allman Brothers Band): 5
Vertigo (U2): 3.5
Not really all that impressed with either track. Vertigo seems as though U2 is trying a bit to hard to remain relevant to the masses. It’s very lackluster and is missing that pop that made them so popular from the eighties through to the mid-nineties. Just Ain’t Easy is also missing that Allman rawness. I realize this is well after Duane’s death, but something is definitely missing here. It gets the edge over U2 here.
The Jack (AC/DC) *
Bring It On Home (Led Zeppelin) *
I’m glad I can’t vote for this – The Jack is in my top 5 AC/DC songs, and its incredible live (even with Brian Johnson clearly inferiorly dirty to Bon Scott).
I Can Hear Music (The Beach Boys) 6
The Last To Say (Atmosphere) 7
I continue to be really pleased with Atmosphere despite not knowing anything they do
Just Ain’t Easy (Allman Brothers Band) 5.5
Vertigo (U2) 3
I apologize for the U2 score, but frankly I’ve knocked it up a notch or two. I DESPISE Vertigo. That Apple commercial made we want to massacre Bono in ways that weren’t even allowed a millennia ago. And my hatred has not abated. I can’t listen without being angry.
I’m curious what forms of massacre have been liberalized since the middle ages. Did you mean “weren’t possible”?
Really meant the other way around – massacres in ways so heinous that not only are they outlawed now, but weren’t even allowed back then
Can I tell you that since I nominated “Just Ain’t Easy,” I’ve heard the song ad nauseum? On my ipod when shuffling on “Play All.” On Slacker radio. On REGULAR radio. I didn’t even know this friggin song before the competition. What the balls?
The Jack (AC/DC) XX
Bring It On Home (Led Zeppelin) XX
Adrock, I say this with love, but damn you for choosing one of my favorite Zeppelin songs.
A few years ago I saw this band called the Sword finish their show with one of their bigger songs, and they threw “Bring It On Home” in the middle of the song, now I do admit I was pretty intoxicated at the time, but killed.
If you’re not familiar with the Sword think of them as Black Sabbath 2.0: lots of guitar play, and they sing about wizards, vikings, and that kind of crap. So consider yourselves warned.
I Can Hear Music (The Beach Boys) 6
The Last To Say (Atmosphere) 7.5
Their harmonies, and melodies are always strong, but I’m not the strongest Beach Boys fan. Maybe someday I’ll change, but currently no. This Atmosphere song just hits a chord with me. I like it a lot.
Just Ain’t Easy (The Allman Brothers) 5.5
Vertigo (U2) 4
When I hear this Allmans song all I can think is they must have been knee deep in coke and heroin at this point in their careers. It’s not a strong song. When it comes to Vertigo, I’m with Adrock, and Greg. This is a terrible U2 song.
Freya is a great track – for those thinking of it, The Sword are ultimate stoner rock (always been a big fan of Lament for the Aurochs myself)… the less in your right mind you are with them the better – and if you dig them, check out their slightly funkier, vastly easier to understand cousins, Clutch
Adrock I live outside DC. I know me some Clutch. Great stuff.
dude I’ve been looking for this on youtube for the past 3 years. Wizards and vikings happen to be my favorite lyrical subject matter.
