I’m posting a bit early today, to help cure those “I’m so tired of being

We all know that you've already checked out. So before you punch out, spend a little time listening to some great tunes!
at work on a Friday afternoon and really want to blow this joint and go have a weekend already” blues. This is a pretty fun looking group of songs, and should be just the thing we need to roll on into the weekend. Votes are due by 8 pm EST on Sunday, July 24. And when you vote, try to bring a friend or two along. New voters are the bomb. Songs are here, if you like it old fashioned.
#1 Seed, The Darkness was highly renowned for their live shows. In fact, if you’re interested, they are doing a reunion tour this year.
#8 Seed, Iron Horse, is also renowned – for their bluegrass covers of heavy metal songs. Will their version of a Modest Mouse favorite, Dramamine, be enough to topple I Believe in a Thing Called Love?
Blind Melon’s #4 seed, Change is facing #5 Life on Mars, by everyone’s favorite slender extraterrestrial being, David Bowie.
#2 seed, Crabbuckit by K-os, holds the high honor of being the 37th greatest Canadian song of all time. #7, Traffic’s The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys, was a top-10 hit in the US in 1971.
And finally, #3 seed, Bittersweet Symphony, a song that will forever remind me of high school, faces #6 Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man. The Verve is most notable for their apparent hatred of each other – this band has broken up three times to date,
and one of the band members was once quoted as saying that it would be more likely to see The Beatles on stage again than to see this band reunite. Although Conway and Loretta seem to have enjoyed working together, since Mr. Twitty passed away in 1993, it is also highly unlikely that this duo will ever grace any more earthly stages with their reunion.
The Handy-Dandy Pasteable:
#1 I Believe In A Thing Called Love (The Darkness) v. #8 Dramamine (Iron Horse)
#4 Change (Blind Melon) v. #5 Life On Mars (David Bowie)
#2 Crabbuckit (K-os) v. #7 The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys (Traffic)
#3 Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve) v. #6 Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man (Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn)
#1 I Believe In A Thing Called Love (The Darkness) 5.8
#8 Dramamine (Iron Horse) 4
I blame still being at work on a Friday night.
#4 Change (Blind Melon) 5.5 – whiny bastards.
#5 Life On Mars (David Bowie) – 9 ahhhhh that was awesome. Sometimes Bowie can literally change the course of an evening.
#2 Crabbuckit (K-os) 8
#7 The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys (Traffic) 5.8
Still feeling K-os, but the end meanders a bit, knocking it down a notch. If it survives Traffic, I wonder if it’s running short on steam. Traffic was good, but ran too damn long. Was otherwise a 7.

#1 I Believe In A Thing Called Love (The Darkness) – 10!
v. #8 Dramamine (Iron Horse) – 8.5
I will be awarding I Believe in A Thing Called Love a 10 for as long as it remains in this tournament. I am a little worried about its current scores so I am really hoping more voters turn up in the next 6 hours to help bring it back up! Also, what’s a bummer is I really am enjoying Dramamine right now so I can’t even use what may or may not be called the Danno Hammer to give it the extra push it needs. It’s basically the perfect Sunday song. May the best song prevail!

Twitty and Lynn were just cute as buttons. Way catchier than I expected.
Probably my highest scores of the tournament all-round. A strong division.

My voting on weekends is inconsistent, but I literally just drove to the library near my house (which is closed) and pulled out my laptop in my car in the parking lot to steal their internet, listen, and get these numbers in. But that said, I checked out the entire Twin Peaks series from said library yesterday, and that has been a key factor in a simply delightful “it is hotter than Frenchman Street in August so I am going to sit inside and be conditioned” sort of few days in the nation’s capital region.
#1 I Believe In A Thing Called Love (The Darkness) 6.5
#8 Dramamine (Iron Horse) 4.5
#4 Change (Blind Melon) 8.8
#5 Life On Mars (David Bowie) 8.5
Giving it to the song more associated with actual past memories, but Bowie is Bowie.
#2 Crabbuckit (K-os) 8
#7 The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys (Traffic) 5.9
No time to get down cause I’m moving up! Next tournament I hope Steve Winwood gives me a higher love instead of this.
#3 Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve) 4
#6 Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man (Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn) 9.5
I took a GIS class last fall (did I already tell this story?) taught by this guy Professor Tomlin, who basically invented GIS. It was ridiculously hard, and I came really close to not passing, which is so silly because I just took it because I wanted to learn the basics of GIS to inform future convos with techs in the field. Anyways, the only time I impressed him was with this assignment we had where we had to film a “fly-through” video of an eagle soaring through a topographical 3D landscape and accompany it with music of our choice. And it was LWMM, which is just always so nice and pleasant. Reading that through, that’s not that great a story, but screw it, Twitty and Lynn have heart and the music sounds like that, this song makes me happy and pleasant, its so great and I’m happy it’s in here.
Bittersweet Symphony, on the other hand, is just another annoying song from the late 90s a la “Closing Time,” when everyone was struggling to figure out what to evolve to in the ashes of the Grunge golden age, and I dread having to hear it one more time. I didn’t mention this last round and it’s only sort of related, but if there was a song from a moment of Cruel Intentions, it wasn’t Bittersweet Symphony, and it wasn’t Colorblind- it was “Every Me Every You” by Placebo in that opening shot of the cemetery. That shit was golden.
#1 I Believe In A Thing Called Love (The Darkness) 8.5
#8 Dramamine (Iron Horse) 4
Love The Darkness and Justin Hawkins…even though he got too fat for the animal print catsuits that defined him. Let’s hope he hit the treadmill for that reunion tour.
#4 Change (Blind Melon) 5
#5 Life On Mars (David Bowie) – 9
One of Bowie’s greatest.
#2 Crabbuckit (K-os) 5
#7 The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys (Traffic) 5.5
#3 Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve) 7.5
#6 Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man (Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn) 1
I barely made it through LWMM…I really do not like it and it makes me cringe.
