Round of 256: Division L, Right Side

oo-ee-oo he looks just like buddy holly

I’m feeling good about this set of tunes.  We’ve been seeing some rather mediocre scores lately, but I think (hope) these have potential to draw some more 9s and 10s from voters.  At least most of these songs won’t put you to sleep.

You can hear them all by following this magical link.  Share your scores and thoughts below.  Votes are due Friday, July 1st at 8 pm Eastern.  (I’m not sure what happened to June either.)

Our highest seeded song in this set is more than 50 years old.  A pioneer of rock ‘n’ roll, Buddy Holly had a substantial influence on a slew of later rockers.  “Not Fade Away” has been covered by the Rolling Stones and the Grateful Dead, and is in fact the 7th most performed song by the Dead.  Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours” was his first top 10 single and gained him international attention.  If the music thing doesn’t pan out for Mraz (whose last name is Czech for “frost”), look out for him serving guacamole… he owns an avocado farm in California.  #2 Not Fade Away (Buddy Holly) vs. #15 I’m Yours (Jason Mraz)

King of Soul (not to be confused with Godfather of Soul) Otis Redding tests the strength of your love for soul against a poppy selection from early alternative rockers the Pixies. #7 That’s How Strong My Love Is (Otis Redding) vs. #10 Here Comes Your Man (Pixies, The)

3EB

Next up is the frat basement match-up.  Both of these songs seem to be perfect cheap-beer sing-a-longs, perhaps with some jumping around and air guitar as well.  “Semi-Charmed Life” is the first hit single from Third Eye Blind, and supposedly written as a response to Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side”.  The Darkness’s “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” was named the 94th best hard rock song of all time by VH1.  #3 Semi-Charmed Life (Third Eye Blind) vs. #14 I Believe In A Thing Called Love (Darkness, The)

Last but not least, cast your votes for a selection off Aerosmith’s debut self-titled album versus a hit from fictional band the Venus in Furs from the movie Velvet Goldmine.  Have fun, kiddos!  #6 Walkin’ The Dog (Aerosmith) vs. #11 2HB (Venus In Furs)

By popular demand, the copy/paste section:

#2 Not Fade Away (Buddy Holly) vs. #15 I’m Yours (Jason Mraz)

#7 That’s How Strong My Love Is (Otis Redding) vs. #10 Here Comes Your Man (Pixies, The)

#3 Semi-Charmed Life (Third Eye Blind) vs. #14 I Believe In A Thing Called Love (Darkness, The)

#6 Walkin’ The Dog (Aerosmith) vs. #11 2HB (Venus In Furs)

Not Fade Away (Buddy Holly) 5.0 [love Buddy but I feel this is merely average even within his own discography]
I’m Yours (Jason Mraz) 5.5 [started up at an 8 and then kept creeping down as the cheesy elements undermined the relaxed summery groove–the scatting section cleared off 1 point]

That’s How Strong My Love Is (Otis Redding) 7 [nice]
Here Comes Your Man (Pixies, The) 8.5

Semi-Charmed Life (Third Eye Blind) 4.0 [hate this song. but. It get’s 3 points for simply being catchy]
I Believe In A Thing Called Love (Darkness, The) 7.5

    Walkin’ The Dog (Aerosmith) 2.0
2HB (Venus In Furs) 6.5 [at points, this was a 2, but at the end, it really came up– want to hear this again.]

That’s How Strong My Love Is (Otis Redding) 6.75
Here Comes Your Man (Pixies, The) 8

Here Comes Your Man reminds me of 500 Days of Summer 🙂

Semi-Charmed Life (Third Eye Blind) 8
I Believe In A Thing Called Love (Darkness, The) 8.75

    Walkin’ The Dog (Aerosmith) 6
    2HB (Venus In Furs) 4

Not Fade Away (Buddy Holly): 4
    I’m Yours (Jason Mraz): 2
I loathe I’m Yours with every ounce of my being…I think it is HORRIBLE. 2 and not a 1 only because that might be because it was inescapable for such a long time (and therefore irritating) which isn’t its fault. Maybe.

That’s How Strong My Love Is (Otis Redding): 6.5
Here Comes Your Man (Pixies, The): 8
500 Days of Summer – YES! Great tune, Pixies. JG-L did you proud.

Semi-Charmed Life (Third Eye Blind): 6.5
I Believe In A Thing Called Love (Darkness, The): 9
This ain’t my favourite 3EB – it was criminally overplayed. Actually and shamelessly like that album a lot though. Oh Justin Hawkins – what might have been if you hadn’t got all drug-riddled and fat. This was your peak. I went to many Darkness shows and man, that was a good time.

    Walkin’ The Dog (Aerosmith): 3
    2HB (Venus In Furs): 4.5

One of my favorite people in the world is finally back in NYC after 6 months of singing on a cruise. So she’s scoring tonight as well. First me, then Sarah.

Not fade away (Buddy Holly): 4.5/ 3 *Sarah: Why is this so blah? It doesn’t even feel produced.
I’m Yours (Jason Mraz): 7.5/ 8 *We both want to dislike this song but secretly (or not so secretly) we can’t.

That’s How Strong My Love Is (Otis Redding): 6/ 6
Here comes your man (Pixies): 6/ 6.5
We thought both these were average.

    Semi-Charmed Life (Third Eye Blind): 3/ 6
I Believe in a Thing Called Love (The Darkness): 10!!!!/ 10 *Sarah: I’ll give it a 9. No. No. Let’s make it a 9.5. What the hell, let’s give it a 10. (Related: This is my nomination, hence the 10 plus exclamation points. The story behind it is that I heard it 20 odd times on a 20 hour road trip to TN…. and since then it has never ceased to make me happy or bring me out of even the grumpiest of moods. Plus… there’s this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIkPosDvh7Y)

Walking the dog (Aerosmith): 1 /1 *We are skeptical that this is really Aerosmith. But what do we know? Nothing.
2HB (Venus in Furs): 1/ 1 *Sarah: this sounds like David Bowie… on downers. The first song gets a 1, this one gets a negative.

  5. Danno's avatar Danno says:

Not Fade Away (Buddy Holly) 5
    I’m Yours (Jason Mraz) 8
I’m yours is so overplayed I think it’ll get murdered in this matchup, but as much as I want to say I’m sick of it, and that I think Mraz is kind of a douche, I can’t deny this song and must maintain the integrity of this tournament 🙂 During my epic summer in California last year someone said something along the lines of “you don’t have a soul if some small part of you doesn’t like this song”.

That’s How Strong My Love Is (Otis Redding) 5
Here Comes Your Man (Pixies, The) 5.5

Semi-Charmed Life (Third Eye Blind) 9
I Believe In A Thing Called Love (Darkness, The) 8.5
SCL has a whole boatload of nostalgia for me (and is my go to karaoke song!). Love IBIATCL too though. Wish these two weren’t pitted against each other.

    Walkin’ The Dog (Aerosmith) 6.5
    2HB (Venus In Furs) 4
Interesting Aerosmith choice. I like it.

  6. The Funky Penguin's avatar The Funky Penguin says:

#2 Not Fade Away (Buddy Holly) 7
vs. #15 I’m Yours (Jason Mraz) 3 blech

#7 That’s How Strong My Love Is (Otis Redding) 6
vs. #10 Here Comes Your Man (Pixies, The) 8 But this isn’t the right version off of Doolittle. It’s some live version or outtake. Actually, this version is kind of crappy.

#3 Semi-Charmed Life (Third Eye Blind) 1 Seriously? This is so bad. So bad. Thanks for polluting my ears. It took me six months to get this song out of my head after working in a diner that played it incessantly. Now I’m back to where I started.
vs. #14 I Believe In A Thing Called Love (Darkness, The) 4 This sounds like a bad mashup of the Cars and Boston. Why would someone do this?

#6 Walkin’ The Dog (Aerosmith) 5 This is a cover of the Rufus Thomas original, which is far superior. Rufus Thomas was a character: comedian, MC, author of many animal themed dances, including the Dog, the Funky Chicken, the Funky Penguin and the Funky Robot (he was ahead of his time). Check out his performance of the Breakdown at Wattstax below. If you didn’t like Steven Tyler’s Walking the Dog, imagine Rufus performing it in his pink cape.

#2 Not Fade Away (Buddy Holly) – 4
    vs. #15 I’m Yours (Jason Mraz)- 5.5

Trailbreaking gets you no extra points in my book. Holly’s sparse sound gets no love from me. Mraz lost points (quickly) as his song progressed, which is never good but, unfortunately, all too common.

#7 That’s How Strong My Love Is (Otis Redding)- 6.7
vs. #10 Here Comes Your Man (Pixies, The)- 6.5

Love you Otis, but this isn’t your strongest song.

    #3 Semi-Charmed Life (Third Eye Blind) – 6
vs. #14 I Believe In A Thing Called Love (Darkness, The)-2

I can’t believe that this was the 94th best hard rock song of all time. I wanted to turn it off.

#6 Walkin’ The Dog (Aerosmith) > vs. #11 2HB (Venus In Furs)

40 years, and lots of heroin and screeching surely does give a band a different sound. Still good enough to defeat V.I.F.

  8. Adrock's avatar Adrock says:

#2 Not Fade Away (Buddy Holly) 3
    #15 I’m Yours (Jason Mraz) 6.5

Can’t believe I’m doing this, but the clipped phrasing of Not Fade Away drove me nuts… just wanted it to end, and Jason Mraz was… reasonably enjoyable… uggh, I feel unwholesome…

#7 That’s How Strong My Love Is (Otis Redding) 7
#10 Here Comes Your Man (Pixies, The) 8

Really good Pixies track – makes me thing of pong games in the Blue Room – always a great memory.

    #3 Semi-Charmed Life (Third Eye Blind) 7.5
#14 I Believe In A Thing Called Love (Darkness, The) 6.3

Forgot how much I liked Semi-Charmed Life. Continues and overall enjoyable set.

#6 Walkin’ The Dog (Aerosmith) 8
    #11 2HB (Venus In Furs) 3.5

    Ahhhh old bluesy Aerosmith… fantastic.

    Me/Tessa. My comments.

#2 Not Fade Away (Buddy Holly):5/5
    #15 I’m Yours (Jason Mraz): 3/3
Buddy Holly would have been awesome if I had never heard any music from post 1950. Booooo Jason Mraz.

#7 That’s How Strong My Love Is (Otis Redding):7/8
#10 Here Comes Your Man (Pixies, The): 8.5/8.5
Otis is an institution. But Pixies are the best. Even though this is their popiest, most over-played song.

    #3 Semi-Charmed Life (Third Eye Blind): 6/4
#14 I Believe In A Thing Called Love (Darkness, The): 5.2/5

Third Eye Blind gets a 6 for catchiness, nostalgia and passing dirty, debauched sex and drug references onto an unsuspecting public. Where the hell did the Darkness go? Its a fine song
but I’m not sure about the vocals. The track doesn’t really have a time period, either.

#6 Walkin’ The Dog (Aerosmith): 6/6
    #11 2HB (Venus In Furs): 7.5/8
Would be higher but Yorke trying to do Ferry really freaked us out. He doesn’t seem at all comfortable with this vocal sound. We’d like to hear Yorke do this with his own vocal style. The instrumentation is better than the original though.

  10. NatalieG's avatar NatalieG says:

Not Fade Away (Buddy Holly) – 5.5
    I’m Yours (Jason Mraz) – 7.5
The summer this song came out, I had it on my ipod on repeat for about a week. In fact, I was walking home from work in Boston’s South End, kicking my steps, bopping my head, and (unknowingly) singing out loud to this song when I looked at the steps of the brownstone across street and saw 3 people laughing hysterically at me. Still like the song, though. 🙂

That’s How Strong My Love Is (Otis Redding) – 8
Here Comes Your Man (Pixies, The) – 7.5
Otis Redding makes me want to pour a glass of wine in the middle of the day. So smooth.

    Semi-Charmed Life (Third Eye Blind) – 8.5
I Believe In A Thing Called Love (Darkness, The) – 8
Semi-Charmed Life was THE song of the summer before my senior year of high school (along with a Mighty Might Boss Tones song and in full denial of MmmmBob’s catchiness). I’ll never be able to listen to this song without thinking of the young freedom of that summer. IBIATCL is awesome too – good matchup!!

Walkin’ The Dog (Aerosmith) – 2
    2HB (Venus In Furs) – 2.5

  11. #2 Not Fade Away (Buddy Holly) -6.5
    #15 I’m Yours (Jason Mraz) -7

#7 That’s How Strong My Love Is (Otis Redding) – 6.5
#10 Here Comes Your Man (Pixies, The) -8

    #3 Semi-Charmed Life (Third Eye Blind) -8
#14 I Believe In A Thing Called Love (Darkness, The) 5.5

#6 Walkin’ The Dog (Aerosmith) -6.5
    #11 2HB (Venus In Furs)-7.5

#2 Not Fade Away (Buddy Holly) vs. #15 I’m Yours (Jason Mraz): 5/9.67
Did somebody say Buddy Holly sounded un-produced? That person did realize he was dead before stereo existed, right? As for I’m Yours…Jason Mraz is a lyrical gangsta, and my daughter was singing this song last summer much better than your average 2.5 year old…Now, she sings it much better than your average 3.5 year old. And I love it. He also does some Sesame Street goodness, at times, with it… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrqF7yD10Bo

#7 That’s How Strong My Love Is (Otis Redding) vs. #10 Here Comes Your Man (Pixies, The): 5/6
Otis Redding should’ve stayed on the Dock of the Bay…Pixies are not blowing me away, but at least they’re earning my respect.

#3 Semi-Charmed Life (Third Eye Blind) vs. #14 I Believe In A Thing Called Love (Darkness, The): 1.33/9.67 (yes, another 29/3rd vote…they’re just not quite tens, but close enough to merit great status…if it comes down to that third, I’ll give them the 10 if I have to…) Let me just say, Semi-Charmed Life reminds me of the time 3EB came to my college, and were complete douches. I honestly hate them with the fire of a thousand burning suns. Their personalities and antics really turned me off. MEANWHILE-From the opening riffs, I Believe in a Thing Called Love gets me going…and it’s a little silly.

#6 Walkin’ The Dog (Aerosmith) vs. #11 2HB (Venus In Furs): 8/4
For mSiL, dj roomba-C’mon, I expect more from you 😉 Why, YES…Aerosmith did exist before the Permanent Vacation album, Angel and Dude Looks like a Lady. They weren’t so commercial in the 70s…they just kicked ass.
Venus in Furs sounds like a bad cross between U2 and David Bowie. No thanks.

  16. Not Fade Away: 7
    I’m Yours: 3

Buddy Holly and The Crickets! You know the drums sound weak because the band couldn’t afford drums yet so they used cardboard boxes? Points for grit. So there is a version of I’m Yours that doesn’t have all this “doo, doo, doobity dop, dop dop dop” mumbo jumbo that sounds so self-inflating, just Jason and a ukulele. I think it was actually the original version of the song before he rerecorded it for radio. Anyways, I love that one, but I hate this one. Sounds weird, but you know. How it is.

That’s How Strong My Love Is: 10
    Here Comes Your Man: 5

This is my nomination. I can see it’s not well received- give it another shot someday, because this song is love in the smoothest, most Otis way possible. Seriously, make out to this song. DO IT. Plus it’s not only my favorite Otis Redding song, but it’s also tied for first on Keith Richards’ list (pretty cool clip of the Stones talking about their favorite Otis songs):

Here Comes Your Man is definitely not the right version, but it looks like it’s too late to point that out- I’m docking it though, the first chord followed by the riff is the best part of the song. Dinah’s going to be pissed if she ever comes back to check on her songs.

    Semi-Charmed Life: 5.6
I Believe In A Thing Called Love: 7.2

Third Eye Blind? We should start our Stone Temple Pilots argument again. The Darkness is awesome, this song is awesome— they talk about songs being ahead of their times, but this one was like “behind their time” and still works.

    Walkin’ The Dog: 3.5
    2HB: 5.9

Steven Tyler should have left this one with Rufus Thomas. The Venus In Furs song grew on me, but not in a huge way.

#2 Not Fade Away (Buddy Holly) [7]
    vs.
#15 I’m Yours (Jason Mraz) [6] this round was close to tied then I remembered how much jason mraz sounds like a lounge singer live…

#7 That’s How Strong My Love Is (Otis Redding) [10] I do hate when a high score seems a bit loaded but I must say I stand by this score AND I think this is quite possibly the best love song out there
    vs.
#10 Here Comes Your Man (Pixies, The) [5.5]

    #3 Semi-Charmed Life (Third Eye Blind) [6]
    vs. #
14 I Believe In A Thing Called Love (Darkness, The)[7] as far as quality this song is more like a 5.5 but if there is a chance to karaoke this number…well you will see how it moves on up to a 7 (don’t forget the air guitar)

#6 Walkin’ The Dog (Aerosmith) [5]
    vs.
#11 2HB (Venus In Furs)[5] mostly indifferent to both

  20. The Progenitor's avatar The Progenitor says:

Not Fade Away – 5.0 vs I’m Yours – 7.0 Buddy has much better work out there even without real drums. Mraz track was very upbeat and a good listen. If you think a ukelele is cool try and find some recordings by Arthur Godfrey (’50’s); not cool.

That’s How Strong My Love Is – 6.5 vs Here Comes Your Man – 4.0 Still can’t get behind these lesser works of Otis but I do like him. This was a better track for the Pixies than the other tunes (if that’s what you choose to call them) in the PCT but he still can’t sing.

Semi-Charmed Life – 5.5 vs I Believe in a Thing Called Love – 2.0 Found Semi-Charmed pretty mediocre and repetitive but The Darkness…..reminded me of Tiny Tim on an off night. As a novelty track it might have rated a 5.0 but I don’t believe it was intended as such.

Walking the Dog – 7.0 vs 2HB – 2.5 Aerosmith is good stuff though I prefer other cuts (love Janie’s Got a Gun); lesson here is that if you’re going to rock-out and scream, talent is a necessity and these guys have it, in spades. Venus was just another yecccch!

    #7 That’s How Strong My Love Is (Otis Redding) – 5 –
vs. #10 Here Comes Your Man (Pixies, The) – 3.5 –

#3 Semi-Charmed Life (Third Eye Blind) – 8.5 – can’t remember the last time I heard this sung by Third Eye Blind rather than by Danno at karaoke.
vs. #14 I Believe In A Thing Called Love (Darkness, The) – 7.5 – the kind of song that is absolutely amazing when it comes on in a bar, but — unlike Semi Charmed Life — I could not listen to over and over and never get sick of.

    #6 Walkin’ The Dog (Aerosmith) – 3 –
vs. #11 2HB (Venus In Furs) – 4 – what happened to this song? identity crisis. almost redeeming.

Not Fade Away (Buddy Holly) 4
    I’m Yours (Jason Mraz) 7.5
This Jason Mraz song is like a Saint Bernard if you’re not a dog person.  It’s totally not your style and a little gross and you don’t really want it anywhere near you, but GOSH DARN IT it’s charming and it sure seems to like you so you like it anyway. (Also, I had never heard this song before this tournament. This must have been during my stint living under a rock, judging by the other commments here.)

That’s how strong my love is (Otis Redding) 5
Here Comes Your Man (The Pixies) 8.5

Semi-Charmed Life (Third Eye Blind) 6.5
I Believe in a Thing Called Love (The Darkness) 8.9
I listened to The Darkness’s “One Way Ticket to Hell and Back” as I was driving across the Eastern Washington deserts and it rocked.  The Darkness rocks.  And they don’t just rock, they glam rock, which is basically one of my favorite things ever (see the next match-up for more on that).  Even though they have songs I like even better, this song is fun and catchy and heartfelt and a little ridiculous, which is probably how you’d describe my taste in music. Semi-charmed Life is a great Karaoke jam. Infectious but a little embarrassing. Still, its catchiness can’t be denied.

    Walking the Dog (Aerosmith) 4
    2HB (Venus in Furs) 10
Oh man, could I write an essay about this song. And I’m gonna. Okay, so 2HB is a Roxy Music song originally, which is where Brian Eno got his start back in the 70s. This version was recorded for the soundtrack of the movie Velvet Goldmine, which is about the rise and fall of glam rock, based more-than-loosely on David Bowie and Iggy Pop. However, Bowie didn’t like the movie so none of his songs appear. Which is fortunate for me, because what resulted is a soundtrack that is one of my favorite albums of all time. I’ve listened to it regularly since high school. The Venus in Furs is a band that just existed for this project, and it’s fronted by Thom Yorke of Radiohead and (as I just learned when I looked it up) has one of the members of Roxy Music. Velvet Goldmine had a major impact on my taste in music, aesthetics, and uh, men, but we won’t get into that. I actually considered nominating a song from this soundtrack or a related artist (specifically Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel), but I thought most of it was a little too weird or esoteric to do very well. I don’t think I’ll be proven wrong with this song, but I’m really glad it’s here. I think I have Janos to thank for that.

I get sad listening to buddy holly cause i always think about what he would’ve ended up donig. What would he done in the late 6ts? Could you imagine him losing the glasses, growing his hair out, railing against the man on stage amid squalls of feedback pouring out of his marshall stacks? That would’ve been great.

That’s How Strong My Love Is (Otis Redding) vs. Here Comes Your Man (Pixies, The) = 9 to 9.5
    Damn!

THIS SOUNDS LIKE AN ALTERNATE VERSION OF HERE COMES YOUR MAN, NO??

I have to admit Semi-Charmed Life is a great great pop song, but IBIATCL is better!!! Fuck Yesss!!!!!!!!!

Not Fade Away – 8.5 – I’ve always loved this song.

I’m Yours – 5.5 – Jason Mraz is kind of like Jack Johnson for me, songs are poppy, his voice is good, I just don’t like him that much. Jason Mraz annoys me more than Jack Johnson actually though, but for no good reason.

That’s How Strong My Love Is – 8 – I think this was my favorite Otis song of the tournament so far.

Her Comes Your Man – 7.3 – I like this song, but I’m going to give this round to Otis.

Semi Charmed Life – 5 – Not crazy about this song, its not terrible, its just something that would fit too well in an American Pie II montage…

I Believe in a Thing Called Love – 7.5 – This dude’s falsetto is just so over the top, I enjoy it.

Walkin the Dog – 6 – As much as I kind of hate Aerosmith these days, some of the early stuff is decent.

2HB – 7.8 – I like this song lots (never heard it before, thanks nominator!)

I just glanced at the votes this round. Is Jason Mraz really going to beat Buddy Holly (even if the consensus is that this is not one of Buddy Holly’s better songs)? REALLY?? (No, I did not nominate NFA.)

  27. Janos scores:

    L Right Side
    Buddy Holly: 8
    Mraz: 5.8

    Otis: 6.8
    Pixies: 8.7

    Thrd Eye Blind: 5.5
    Darkness: 6.5

Aersmith: 3.5 This sounds like a cover band you’d find playing during the day at a ski lodge.
    Venus in Furs: 9.4
*Could someone mention that this Thom Yorke on vocals as a teaser? Though with this crowd that might actually hurt the song.

Here Comes Your Man (Pixies, The) – 6.5
Seriously. Otis Redding could sing me the phone book and I would find it romantic – but when the song is actually full of romantic sentiments and sounds that good, it is perfect. Gotta be a 10.

    Semi-Charmed Life (Third Eye Blind) – 4.5
I Believe In A Thing Called Love (Darkness, The) – 6.5

Walkin’ The Dog (Aerosmith) – 5
    2HB (Venus In Furs) – 6

    Duty calls:

    Buddy Holly song — 8
Jason Mraz song — love Aiko’s analogy of a St. Bernard and totally agree. 7.5

    Otis Redding: Oh man. 10
Pixies Here Comes Your Man: I’m owning my nomination after being outed (thanks Guillermo!), but I will say, this is not the particular Pixies version I had in mind. I also will say that I chose the song at the last minute with the intention of nominating a crowd-pleaser. So it looks like I succeeded, which is great, but just because I’m sharing I feel the need to say that I woke up the morning after with deep regret that I hadn’t nominated this Tom Petty rouser instead:

This is a moot point because I didn’t, and also because if I had, I’d still vote Otis to win. So anyway, Here Comes Your Man = 6.5.

Semi Charmed Kind of Life – 4
    Darkness – 10 f yeah, and I never say f yeah

    Walkin the Dog 7
    2HB 6
