Round of 256: Division H, Right Side

I am quite pleased to have posting duties for this bracket, as I dig pretty much all of these songs.  We have a good mix of energy and emotion on the eight tracks below, which you can listen to here. Vote by commenting below before 8pm (EST) on Thursday.

#2 Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) vs. #15 Teenage FBI (Guided By Voices).  This is Dr. J’s top seed, and a good choice.   Clapton was a bit of a band slut in these days- fitting in this Blind Faith album  between dominating stints with Cream and Derek and the Dominoes (plus a cameo on While My Guitar Gently Weeps).

#7 Mr. Bongo Bong (Manu Chao) vs. #10 I’d Rather Go Blind (Etta James).  Two great artists who were stunted by the “Best Rock Song of All-Time” format from last tournament get a hearing here.

#3 Temptation (New Order) vs. #14 Let Down (Radiohead).  I’m picking this as the fierce battle of the day. Of course, I’m usually wrong.

#6 I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding) vs. #11 Ever Make You Mine (These United States).   During and after last tournament there was definitely a clamor for “more Otis!” from Astrid and others.  Let’s see what happens when he steps to the plate tonight.

#2 Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) 6.5
vs. #15 Teenage FBI (Guided By Voices) 5.5 [Is it ironic that the thing that lost me was he voice?]

#7 Mr. Bongo Bong (Manu Chao) 5.5 [enjoyable.]
vs. #10 I’d Rather Go Blind (Etta James) 8.5

    #3 Temptation (New Order) 8.1
vs. #14 Let Down (Radiohead) 8.5 [Either of these should win.]

#6 I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding) 8
vs. #11 Ever Make You Mine (These United States) 8
[I think Otis will clinch this easily, but I really enjoyed the musicianship in TUS]

  3. aiko says:

Voting context today: It was the last day of school in my first year of teaching, it is the first day of summer, it is motherfucking like 75 degrees here in Seattle FINALLY, and I’ve had a beer and a nap and I’m in a pretty stinkin’ good mood.

Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) – 6.5
Teenage FBI (Guided By Voices) – 5
I thought Blind Faith was 90s music, so it gets a bump for being ahead of its time.

Mr. Bongo Bong (Manu Chao) – 8. This is stupid but I like it.
I’d Rather Go Blind (Etta James) – 7

    Temptation (New Order) – 10
    Let Down (Radiohead) – 8.4
It doesn’t matter how old I am, what time of day it is, what time of year it is, where I am, or what my mood is. And it doesn’t matter what song it is. New Order is always perfect. New Order was perfect when I was 16 smoking cloves in my friend’s 80s Volvo cruising around the boring streets of Sacramento, and New Order was perfect at 7:00 this morning driving in to work on the last day of the school year. This track may suffer a fate similar to LCD Soundsystem where people think it’s too long and repetitive and electronic, but if you think that you’re not paying attention. Listen to how the guitars change and build. Listen to how the vocals change and build and interact with the instruments. Listen to how that repetitive riff serves as a foundation to the song, but also acts like a trellis for the other instruments to weave in and out of. Just listen. Then go get some more New Order, it doesn’t even matter what, and listen to that.

All this being said, I really, really like this Radiohead song, and this is truly a tough match-up. And it’s a match-up where the greater context of the bands impacts my vote. I LOVED Radiohead in my early teens. However, contemporaneous to my discovery of New Order, OK Computer came out. While the first half is great, the title of this song is prescient, because everything Radiohead did after that was a Let Down. They went in a direction that completely alienated me. So I dinged them a little for letting me down, while New Order never lets me down.

I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding) – 7.4
Ever Make You Mine (These United States) – 6.8

Listening party wooooo!!!!! This is for Danno/Sarita/JLee

Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) – 6/6.5/6
Teenage FBI (Guided By Voices) – 6.7/5/5

Mr. Bongo Bong (Manu Chao) – 2.5/5.5/5
I’d Rather Go Blind (Etta James) – 6.5/5.5/8

    Temptation (New Order) – 5/4/7
    Let Down (Radiohead) – 5.8/8/7

I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding) – 6.3/5.5/7
Ever Make You Mine (These United States) – 7/6/3

  5. Wiggs says:

Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith): 9. One of my all-time favorites. If you like this, you’ll probably like Alana Davis’ cover of it for a little more of a modern take.
Teenage FBI (Guided By Voices): 3.

Mr. Bongo Bong (Manu Chao): 7.5. I’m pretty sure this is the song my dog hears in his head when he’s prancing down the street and showing off for the ladies.
I’d Rather Go Blind (Etta James): 4, and yes I do feel like a bad person for not liking Etta James.

Temptation (New Order): 5.5. I can appreciate aiko’s description of Temptation, but I’m a bit of a selfish a-hole about listening to music in that I don’t want to force myself to pay attention. A truly good song should grab and hold my attention, and unfortch, Temptation didn’t. But I re-listened and I do see how intricate the song gets.
    Let Down (Radiohead): 5.

I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding): 8.5!
Ever Make You Mine (These United States): 8. This song sounds like it should be on the Scrubs soundtrack, which automatically puts it in the awesome column.

  6. Grade Inflationist says:

Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) – 8 This whole album is lovely. Glad someone nominated this.
Teenage FBI (Guided By Voices) – 6

Mr. Bongo Bong (Manu Chao) – 6
I’d Rather Go Blind (Etta James) –7

    Temptation (New Order) – 7
    Let Down (Radiohead) – 7

I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding) – 8
Ever Make You Mine (These United States) – 6

Man, I must be in a good mood because my scores are way up today.

  7. brian orce says:

my way home: 7. Powerful… don’t LOVE listening to it, but it gets you. Hard to explain.
teenage fbi: 3. What are you doing? I would love to heckle these goons.

bongo bong: 7. I objectively think Manu Chao are precious, self-satisfied in a goofy way, but I like listening to their music. Can’t fight it.
go blind: 3. Is this song over yet?!?!?!

    temptation: 5. Eh. Ok.
let down: 2. Ugh. I respect Radiohead, but some of their shit is just god awful. I’m sure I’ll get a lot of “it’s just over your head” bullshit for this opinion, but whatevs.

loving you too long:6. Powerful, I like it, but it wasn’t easy to finish.
ever make you mine: 2. Again, please shut up.

  8. Chris Roomba says:

#2 Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) vs. #15 Teenage FBI (Guided By Voices): 4/5
Can’t Find My Way Home was somebody’s top seed? Really? Really? Really?! It was whiny, and a bit like a bad impression of the Marshall Tucker Band (Can’t You See). Both of these were weak.

#7 Mr. Bongo Bong (Manu Chao) vs. #10 I’d Rather Go Blind (Etta James): 2/5

#3 Temptation (New Order) vs. #14 Let Down (Radiohead): 5/6

#6 I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding) vs. #11 Ever Make You Mine (These United States).: 7/5

  9. Matt B says:

Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) – 6.5
Teenage FBI (Guided By Voices) – 4.5

I liked the emotion of the Blind Faith song. Meh to GBV

Mr. Bongo Bong (Manu Chao) – 9
I’d Rather Go Blind (Etta James) – 6

Sadly, Manu Chao is not playing this summer in Prospect Park like he has for the last several years. Mr. Bongo Bong always makes me think of summertime parties, which is a beautiful thing.

Etta suffers a bit following directly after Manu Chao. Their styles are just too distinct. Similar problem suffered by the recent Megadeath-Buena Vista Social Club match-up.

    Temptation (New Order) – 7
    Let Down (Radiohead) – 2

In the past (and likely the future), I’ve been a complainer about long songs but I didn’t have any issue with this New Order song. Fun tune. Caught and kept my attention.

I have never gotten into Radiohead. Heretical? Drown me in a well and call me a witch, but they just don’t do it for me. The lead singer has the kind of slurred vocals used by Alec Ounsworth (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!) but with a less interesting voice. The sound is complex and layered, but I really prefer a more minimalist sound. In particular, although I’m not a “lyrics guy,” I do prefer to hear a singer’s voice more clearly.

I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding) – 8.5
Ever Make You Mine (These United States) – 5.7

I’m always in the mood for Otis.

  10. #2 Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) 6.8
#15 Teenage FBI (Guided By Voices) 3.8

Don’t forget about Steve Winwood! Clapton goes to lengths in his autobiography to describe not only how hard it was trying to get Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker to settle down and just make some f-ing music, but what a steal it was getting Winwood on board for Blind Faith as well. On the subject of that book, I actually took that in via audiobook. It’s narrated by Bill Nighy, who plays the old rock star in Love Actually, and that somehow makes an awesome thing even better. Get it for a road trip. TFBI doesn’t do much for me.

#7 Mr. Bongo Bong (Manu Chao) 5
#10 I’d Rather Go Blind (Etta James) 4

Je ne t’aime plus, mon amour? Do all the Clandestino songs have the same melody? Just like four of the Radio Esperanza tracks also have the “Me Gustas Tu” melody? To this day I still can’t decide if that’s innovative or lazy. Either way, it’s enjoyable but nothing special. I thought I was going to like Etta more than I did, I felt like that song never got started.

    #3 Temptation (New Order) 8.2
    #14 Let Down (Radiohead) 4

Trainspotting bonus points, as Aiko, Grant, Jacob and I discussed on a May pre-tournament-about-the-coming-tournament Podcast. Plus it’s exciting in a When In Rome way. Let Down, yeah, I’m in Orce’s camp- maybe I’m more of a Yorke traditionalist, but “High and Dry” and especially, especially “Talk Show Host” are my bags of Radiohead tea.

#6 I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding) 8
#11 Ever Make You Mine (These United States) 6.5

The King Of Soul is going to be tough to beat, and this isn’t even in my top five Otis songs.

  11. Carrie says:

Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith): 6.5
Teenage FBI (Guided By Voices): 4

Mr. Bongo Bong (Manu Chao): 7
I’d Rather Go Blind (Etta James): 8.5

    Temptation (New Order): 7
    Let Down (Radiohead): 8.5

I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding): 8
Ever Make You Mine (These United States): 7

  12. asf says:

Can’t Find My Way Home – 7.25 – really good song, -.5 for distracting intermittent crash symbol

Teenage Fbi – 6 – I like the intro, I do not like this guy’s voice very much, catchy enough tune though.

    Bongo Bong – 6.3 – Fun song.

    I’d Rather Go Blind – 7.2

Temptation – 7.8 – Very relevant old band, nice job nominator.

    Let Down – 7.8 – having tou

I’ve Been Loving You Too Long – 7.1

Ever Make You Mine – 6

  13. Bday says:

Can’t find my way home: 7
    Teenage FBI: 3

Bongo Bong: 8 (I wanted to hate this song but I found myself tapping my foot).
    I’d Rather Go Blind: 3

    Temptation: 4
Let Down: 3 ( I never got the draw to Radiohead)

    I’ve been Loving You: 1
    Ever Make You Mine: 3

  14. Eileen says:

    Can’t Find My Way Home – 5.0 vs Teenage FBI – 5.5
    Bongo Bong – 4.5 vs I’d Rather Go Blind – 7.0
    Temptation – 5.0 vs Let Down – 4.5
I’ve Been Loving You – 6.5 vs Ever Make You Mine – 5.5

  15. The Progenitor says:

As a whole, this group of songs was a big bore (or snore). Not much to choose from either way as my scores will show.

Can’t Find My Way – 5.5 vs Teenage FBI – 4.5 Way was OK and nothing more while FBI was less pleasant as it lacked a voice, lyrics and a sound to appreciate.

Bongo Bong – 5.0 vs I’d Rather Go Blind – 6.5. Bongo was another mediocre effort and I’ll pass on the castrato joke. Only one per round. I like some of Etta’s work but this was not a good song for her.

Temptation – 4.5 vs Let Down – 4.0 I would prefer the “old order” in this instance but Let Down was just that. I hear only mediocrity singing out there.

I’ve Been Loving You – 6.5 vs Ever Make You Mine – 5.5 Not Otis’ best work but good enough in this test. Mine showed a little spark of life but not enough to get it out of the doldrums of this group.

  16. lindsay says:

Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith): 4
Teenage FBI (Guided By Voices): 3.5
At the beginning of Can’t Find My way, I was kind of digging it. By the end, I wanted to lend the singer my handy atlas. And Teenage FBI — blah. I don’t like teenagers. Or this song. (Someone sounds grumpy today.)

Mr. Bongo Bong (Manu Chao): 4
I’d Rather Go Blind (Etta James): 8.75
Manu Chao songs always sound kind of similar and I’m not their biggest fan. This song sounds like Manu Chao had a jam session with the Flight of the Conchord guys, although I’m not sure why I think that. I LOVE this Etta song. I think she has such a gorgeous voice. But it does seem like the song just sort of stops and I’m not sure if it does that in other versions I’ve heard. Anyway, I’m docking it .25 for that abrupt ending, because I could have enjoyed it for another few seconds.

    Temptation (New Order): 6
    Let Down (Radiohead): 7.5
I liked Temptation well enough. But for such a long song, it didn’t really stick with me once I started the next song. On the other hand, I like Radiohead very much and this song is one I always forget about but really enjoy.

I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding): 8
Ever Make You Mine (These United States): 7.5
I love the way Loving You Too Long sort of builds at the beginning, then pulls in a bit for a while and then gets all big and loud again. Love it. If this song hadn’t already been nominated, I would have put it in myself.
But I was surprised and I don’t like that this happened — I really liked Ever Make You Mine too! It was fun!
But Otis gets the edge because I really love the first little bit of the song — it might be my favorite first 45ish seconds of any song.

  17. adam says:

Oops – for what it’s worth – I meant to insist on nominating the live TV version of ‘Teenage FBI” not the wussy studio version. If ya haven’t voted yet, reference this instead: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODK0MXIXkk0

  18. adam says:

Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) vs. Teenage FBI (Guided By Voices) = 4 to 6
Meh, I wish I would’ve put in some Pantera rather this song. Guess I was in the mood at the time.

Mr. Bongo Bong (Manu Chao) vs. I’d Rather Go Blind (Etta James) = 5.5 to 9.5
I’m cool with Manu Chao, but this is sort of an unfair matchup for any song

Temptation (New Order) vs. Let Down (Radiohead) = 8 to 7
That’s a pretty great New Order song and I gotta admit I like this Radiohead song.

I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding) vs. Ever Make You Mine (These United States) = 8 to 6
Never heard ‘These Untied States’ Not bad, but again, not a fair match up. Some heavy hitters in this round.

  19. Meghan says:

Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) 5
Teenage FBI (Guided By Voices) 6

Mr. Bongo Bong (Manu Chao) 6
I’d Rather Go Blind (Etta James) 7

    Temptation (New Order) 6
    Let Down (Radiohead) 4

I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding) 7
Ever Make You Mine (These United States) 6.5

  20. Sam says:

#2 Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) 8.8
#15 Teenage FBI (Guided By Voices) 6

I try to not read other people’s comments before, but I caught the word “whiny” in reference to Blind Faith, which of course made me nervous because I tend to be pretty particular about vocals. Not so here. This song sits really well with me and blends nicely with the driving rain outside my door here in Boston. Man that falsetto is nice. I think listening to all this Bon Iver is putting me in a falsetto mood.

I like Teenage FBI, but it isn’t memorable for me. Is this Nerd rock? I do enjoy it though, just can’t imagine wanting to relisten to this song again.

#7 Mr. Bongo Bong (Manu Chao) 6
#10 I’d Rather Go Blind (Etta James) 6.5

Is Manu Chao French? Spanish? Portuguese? But he sings in English? Although a simple google would answer these questions, I prefer to leave him shrouded in mystery…or at least shrouded in the cloud of marijuana smoke at one of his concerts. I kinda wish this song had kicked in with a beat at some point though.

Etta James is getting to me tonight. But as songs I think I don’t have enough appreciation for their simplicity, although I think it’s a tad better than the Manu Chao entry.

    #3 Temptation (New Order) 4
    #14 Let Down (Radiohead) 9

I love Blue Monday. And this song is too long for me and not nearly as catchy as Blue Monday.

Like I said earlier, the rain is falling beautifully outside and I just got home from a 11 hour day. This song was perfect. That opening lick from Johnny Greenwood is so pretty.

#6 I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding) 5
#11 Ever Make You Mine (These United States) 9

Like Guillerrmo, this song isn’t even close to a top Otis entry for me. But I think I’m punishing it because my favorites are just. that. good.

I like the Harmony in this song that’s an octave up. It also makes me want to listen to them more because it’s accessible, but also doing some different things (especially melodically). I really like when it picks up around 1:30 and then later at 2:00. Plus the sing along outro would be sweet live. Thank you to whoever nominated this!

  21. jenny says:

    can’t find my way home – 6
    teenage FBI – 3

bongo bong – 3. goofy! but janos, manu chao looks kinda like you in that picture.
i’d rather go blind – 8. oh man. no contest.

temptation – 8. sorry, i have a huge soft spot for new wave that i just can’t ignore.
let down – 7. love this album, but not one of my favorite songs.

i’ve been loving you too long – 7.5
ever make you mine – 5

Teenage FBI (Guided By Voices) – 5

Mr. Bongo Bong (Manu Chao) – 7
I’d Rather Go Blind (Etta James) – 6
I just like Manu Chao. I’m not entirely sure why – but it just makes me happy to listen to it. Tough match going up against Etta, but this song just didn’t do it for me this morning.

    Temptation (New Order) – 5
    Let Down (Radiohead) – 5
Neither of these guys really brought anything to the table today. I like a lot of Radiohead, but this one felt kind of flat.

I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding) – 8.5
Ever Make You Mine (These United States) – 4.5

#2 Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) vs. #15 Teenage FBI (Guided By Voices). 6/ 6.5

#7 Mr. Bongo Bong (Manu Chao) vs. #10 I’d Rather Go Blind (Etta James). 8/8.5. Love Manu, but I have to give it to Ms. James on this one.

#3 Temptation (New Order) vs. #14 Let Down (Radiohead). 8/10+++++++++++. Let Down is my favorite song of all time by my favorite band of all time. So damn beautiful. Perfect every single time.

#6 I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding) vs. #11 Ever Make You Mine (These United States). 8.3/ 8

can’t find my way home – 9.5 (this song is beautiful. i’m really glad to see it in the tournament, it had fallen off my radar for a while.)
teenage fbi – 5 (not terrible but it just sounds like noise & whines after blind faith)

mr bongo bong – 8 (i could use more of this in my life)
    i’d rather go blind – 5

    temptation – 6
let down – 6.5 (i expected this to do more for me)

i’ve been loving you too long – 4 (i guess i just never caught that otis bug that all the other voters have. i’m not juuuust trying to increase the spread here. frankly, i just found this a bit boring.)
ever make you mine – 9.5 (this was my nomination, and although it’s likely heading for defeat, i’m thrilled that it was received so well by most voters. it was my nomination in the band-i-recently-discovered-and-song-i-totally-dig-at-the-moment-but-don’t-know-how-long-that-will-last category. i love the energy, the harmonies, the instrumentation, the structure, the dynamics. short & sweet. always puts me in a good mood! you can stream the whole album on their website – defintely recommend it. a lot of it is more mellow. “the great rivers” is another fun one.)

Can’t find my way home: 5
    Teenage FBI: 6.5
Can’t find my way home made me too sleepy. Maybe because I haven’t really slept since yesterday night. I listened to both versions of Teenage FBI, I liked it.

    Bongo Bong: 8
    I’d Rather go blind: 6
Bongo Bong showed up in a music swap I was part of about 5 years ago. I’ve loved it since. To the underdog!

    Temptation: 5
    Let Down: 5.5
There are parts of the Radiohead song I really like, but overall it’s not my fave of theirs so I can’t rank it higher. I just wasn’t in the mood for New Order this afternoon. Sorrrry.
