I’ll be taking us through Division C, which looks to be a fun one- B.o.B., Sumner, Armstrong, Cash, Nicks, Bono, Bjork, Clapton…Grooveshark link is here, vote by commenting here or e-mailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com. Best of luck to all songs, especially yours.

New Order

#1 Ceremony (New Order) vs. #16 Closing Time (Semisonic) New Order was comprised of the three remaining members of Joy Division following the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis. The last song Curtis wrote for JD was Ceremony, and the first single that NO released was a re-recording of “Ceremony.” It matches off against “Closing Time,” high scorer of all 14 play-in songs, 1998 Grammy Nominee, and X:45 AM anthem of bars worldwide.

#8 That Was A Crazy Game Of Poker (O.A.R.) vs. #9 Way Of Light (Gift Of Gab) On the heels of Midnight Spin’s entry, another independent rock band with roots in Montgomery County, Maryland. Of A Revolution goes toe to toe with Gift of Gab, one-half of the San Francisco hip-hop group Blackalicious.

#4 Airplanes (B.o.B. featuring Haylee Williams) vs. #13 A Kiss To Build A Dream On (Louis Armstrong) B.o.B. and Williams recorded their sections in separate studios, and met for the first time in person at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards- a full 59 years after Armstrong recorded AKTBADO.

#5 Crabbuckit (K-os) vs. #12 Cut Your Hair (Pavement) After the success enjoyed by fellow Canadian rapper K’naan in the last tournament, K-os has got quite the shoes to fill.   Pavement joins a growing list of one and done’s from LTDMT looking to prove themselves this time around.

About g-mo

The day I was born, Michael Jackson's Thriller album was at the top of the Billboard 200. I've been trying my best to live up to that expectation ever since.

    #1 Ceremony (New Order) 4/4
    #16 Closing Time (Semisonic) 8/8

Ceremony faded into white noise for us both.

#8 That Was A Crazy Game Of Poker (O.A.R.) 5.3/8
#9 Way Of Light (Gift Of Gab) 3.5/5..5

A: Loved the beat on Way of Light, but something about the chime (or whatever it was) bugged the heck out of me and I never got into the lyrics. M: Lots of nostalgia helped a bit, but I love to sing along to Crazy Game of Poker.

    #4 Airplanes (B.o.B. featuring Haylee Williams) 6/4
#13 A Kiss To Build A Dream On (Louis Armstrong) 8.5/9

Louis is perfect for dancing… and every night is good for dancing

    #5 Crabbuckit (K-os) 8.5/7
#12 Cut Your Hair (Pavement) 5.3/5

A: Wow, Crabbuckit is terrific. Love that base line (was that a stand up bass?) and all kinds of fun and funky. Thank you whoever dropped that one in.

I apologize for the length: I adore New Order. I nominated another song of theirs (Temptation), but I’m glad to see them getting multiple nods. Ceremony, I think, provides the perfect bridge between Joy Division and New Order. The vocals are still Joy Division–a little raw, a little strained, a lot human (heartbreakingly, I think they are trying to sound like Ian Curtis–whether in tribute or because they haven’t found their own voice yet, I don’t know. Maybe both). The guitar work represents the prototype that New Order would perfect in later years: a simple guitar riff that hooks you in before the other instruments start calling back and poignantly intertwining with it as it builds throughout the song. The song sounds far more synthetic than it actually is if you pay attention to its parts (are there any synthesizer in there? I don’t think so. New Order will master the synthesizer like no other 80s band in later years).

    #8 That Was A Crazy Game Of Poker (O.A.R.) – 8.3
#9 Way Of Light (Gift Of Gab) – 6
I give props to a song that can sustain 8 minutes, mix in ska beats, skirt the line of sounding like Sublime, and still come out ahead. Way of Light was very pleasant. It seems like good afterparty music.

    #4 Airplanes (B.o.B. featuring Haylee Williams) – 4.5
    #13 A Kiss To Build A Dream On (Louis Armstrong) – 6.5
Airplanes… It’s completely adequate, but I find it kind of bland. AKTBADO is cute and sweet. I could see it putting me in a relaxed good mood if I were more wound up. It makes me picture the father of the bride dancing with the flower girl on his feet. Just kinda precious, you know?

    #5 Crabbuckit (K-os) – 9.5
    #12 Cut Your Hair (Pavement) – 7.7
Crabbuckit is another of my nominations, so I hope you guys enjoy it, glad to see some folks already are. It gets me going no matter what else is going on. I’ve listened to this song a lot over the years, and tonight was the first time I noticed how relatively little is going on instrumentally at any given time, because it’s got such a rich sound. Songs that do a lot with a little are usually a big hit with me. As for Pavement, I never really got into them, but I always enjoy it when I hear them. They make me feel warm and fuzzy. I just want to hug the guy’s voice, somehow.

O.A.R.: 5 Was really enjoying this song and then it got too long. Like the sound though, I will have to check them out.
Way of Light: 8 Def. adding this song to my playlist. Thanks to whoever plopped this in.

Airplanes:8 This score does not make sense to me, but there it is…In some ways overdone, in other ways something wistful about using airplanes as shooting stars….Arnie, you better get in here!
Kiss to Build a Dream On: 10 Found it interesting that this matchup was all about wishing and hoping. Though I will place my bet on a person over an airplane anyday…

Crabbuckit- Thoroughly enjoyed this song- thanks Aiko! 9

I like the Joy Division version better, but this is one of the great getting sober/starting over/driving into the dawn soundtracks ever created.
    #16 Closing Time (Semisonic) – 5

    #8 That Was A Crazy Game Of Poker (O.A.R.) – 4
#9 Way Of Light (Gift Of Gab) – 6

    #4 Airplanes (B.o.B. featuring Haylee Williams) – 4
    #13 A Kiss To Build A Dream On (Louis Armstrong) – 7

    #5 Crabbuckit (K-os) – 5
    #12 Cut Your Hair (Pavement) – 9

  8. #1 Ceremony (New Order) 7.3
    #16 Closing Time (Semisonic) 4.4

Ceremony makes me want to run really fast under transformer towers in the rain, nice pick. Closing Time makes me feel like I’m 21 and frantically trying to figure out if I am going to find a girl to make out with in the next t-minus 5 minutes before the bar closes, which is honestly an unnecessary anxiety I’m very comfortable leaving in 2004.

#8 That Was A Crazy Game Of Poker (O.A.R.) 6.7
#9 Way Of Light (Gift Of Gab) 6.4

The O.A.R. kids went to Wootton and I went to Richard Montgomery- this fact was summer banter for my friends and I in the late 90’s. You know, this song is really long, but I like the way the verses stay original around the Johnny choruses; it’s like an indie alt interpretation of a Dylan narrative a bit. You stay engaged if you listen to the whole song. That said, it’s also a little nonsensical and the actual guitar work is nothing original. WOL is nice and I dig the beat, but it’s not much more than that unless I’m missing something. These are close.

    #4 Airplanes (B.o.B. featuring Haylee Williams) 4.2
#13 A Kiss To Build A Dream On (Louis Armstrong) 8.6

You know, if there was going to be a song in this from the B.o.B. album I wish it would have been the Rivers Cuomo “Magic” song. And even that song is silly. This song is sillier. The largest margin of victory to date was Toots over Maclachlan at 67.6+…I have a feeling Louis Armstrong is going to make that seem paltry, this is just a lovely, lovely song. Maybe the new “Stand By Me”…?

    #5 Crabbuckit (K-os) 8.1
#12 Cut Your Hair (Pavement) 6.0
Crabbuckit is killing it. That bass line makes me think of the Roaring 20s and lots of moving feet and big skirts, awesome, awesome. Sorry Pavement lovers, I’m going with the Canuck.

    Airplanes: 7.5
    Kiss to Build: 2

    Crabbuckit:7

    Ceremony = 6
    Closing Time = 7

    Poker = 5
Way of the Light = 5
—Poker’s lyrics are so bad that I’m actually both angry and embarassed. It has positive associations (freshman college hallways and the beginning of college, but the smarmy, college-radio shittiness wins out).

    Airplanes = 6
    Kiss Dream On = 7.5

    Crabbuckit = 7.5
    Cut Your Hair = 8
    — Starting off really not liking “Crabbuckit,’ but it’s well put-together and it won me over with it’s sort of new/old vibe. Upbeat always helps although it’s tough to have a saxophone w/o being cheesy. Cut Your Hair is my favorite Pavement song.

    #1 Ceremony (New Order) – 10
Glad to see Ian Curtis gives his old mates a positive mention. Love this song.
#16 Closing Time (Semisonic) – 6 Brings me back to circa 1998. I’m in the passenger seat of a friends car listening to the New Radicals thinking like cannot get better. Then Closing Time comes through the speakers and life GETS BETTER. Soft spot for this song, but not against New Order.

#8 That Was A Crazy Game Of Poker (O.A.R.) – 8 Another song that sends me back in time. This time to Paris 1921. I stumbled out of the Ritz with my pockets turned out. The doorman says something to me in French that I don’t comprehend, but know means “Don’t come back.” All I think about is how I let that drunk F. Scott drag me to a poker game with Ernest Hemingway and how I let either of them get the best of me.
#9 Way Of Light (Gift Of Gab) – 6.5 Fun song.

    #4 Airplanes (B.o.B. featuring Haylee Williams) – 4
    #13 A Kiss To Build A Dream On (Louis Armstrong) – 7

Liked the instrumentals on TWACGoP, but the lyrics and vocals upset me.
Way of the Light is one of my favorite songs. Sad that so many people can’t appreciate good hip hop, but I think it will win over some haters.

    Airplanes (B.o.B. featuring Haylee Williams) ~ 7.9
vs. A Kiss To Build A Dream On (Louis Armstrong) ~ 8.1
Really pleasantly surprised by Airplanes. Love that positive hip hop.

As suggested by others above, Ceremony fade into a bit of white noise for me. I actually gave it 3 listens to try to pay more attention and it just didn’t grab my attention. A fine song, but meh. To be somewhat fair, I gave Closing Time some extra listens as well. Not a bad song but neither is it especially exciting.

    #8 That Was A Crazy Game Of Poker (O.A.R.) – 6
#9 Way Of Light (Gift Of Gab) – 6

Never really listened closely to an O.A.R. before. At times, this good song reminded me a bit of Dispatch and of the Two Gallants. Unfortunately, it was a bit too long for my taste. I’m a huge Blackalicious fan but did not love this album. Hip-Hop also suffers in a contest like this for me when I’m listening at work. I just can’t give the lyrics the attention they deserve. So, a tie, although I suspect the win would have gone to GoG under different circumstances.

    #4 Airplanes (B.o.B. featuring Haylee Williams) – 4
    #13 A Kiss To Build A Dream On (Louis Armstrong) – 8.5

Ceremony (New Order) =7 I was relieved to hear this tune, and then listened to it again. I guess I had been expecting one of their darker songs or something. Anyways, instantly I remembered this one went and was pleased.
vs. Closing Time (Semisonic) = 5 Pretty cheesy song that I am never happy to hear at the end of the night. I guess making the association with having my drinks taken away does that.

That Was A Crazy Game Of Poker (O.A.R.) = 3 Hate it. I’m sure musically it deserves something, but not much. Silly lyrics, awful vocals and reminds me of drunk fraternity bonding.
vs. Way Of Light (Gift Of Gab) = 6.5 This had the catholic written all over it. Was it his suggestion? Upbeat and positive. Sure, I liked the energy.

Airplanes (B.o.B. featuring Haylee Williams) = 7 This is a great song. Have I heard this on the radio? Anyways I liked it and give it seven.
vs. A Kiss To Build A Dream On (Louis Armstrong) = 7.5 I’m not going to over-score just because I like Louis and New Orleans but it’s tempting. Another great song by a master.

Crabbuckit (K-os) = 6 Hahah, I have this one on my running playlist. I found it once as suggested exercise music. I don’t think it fit too well, but I didn’t dislike it enough to ever take it off
vs. Cut Your Hair (Pavement) = 8 I’ve liked this one for a long time. Classic Pavement. I heard a cover of it a years or so ago that was really good by Charlotte Gainsborgh, I think. Real good stuff.

    Ceremony – 5.0 vs Closing Time – 8.0
Poker – 7.0 vs Way of the Light – 6.0
Airplane – 3.5 vs Kiss to Build On – 8.5
    Crabbuckit – 8.0 vs Cut Your Hair – 4.0

  20. The Progenitor's avatar The Progenitor says:

Ceremony – 4.0 vs Closing Time 7.5 – Like Closing Time in the play-in and still enjoy; one of the advantages for me is that this is new to me; Ceremony was too repetitive and difficult to pick up the lyrics over the music.

Poker – 6.0 vs Way of the Light – 5.0 – Poker kind of grows on you; funky and not too long, but chorus was the best part; Light was not unpleasant; just blah.

Airplane – 3.5 vs Kiss to Build On – 9.0 – Fact that Louis Armstrong is even in this contest speaks volumes about the quality of this music; tune-in in another 40-50 years and see if any of the competition is still being played anywhere; definitely a song to chill to. Airplane was like 2 different songs for me one ok and one bad.

Crabbuckit – 7.5 vs Cut Your Hair 4.0 – Crabbuckit was another pleasant surprise; fun, snappy rhythm. Cut Your Hair was just another bad drone.

  21. Mark B's avatar Mark B says:

    #1 Ceremony (New Order) 7
    #16 Closing Time (Semisonic) 8.5

I don’t listen to New Order enough. Ceremony is really great. Not epic but really great all the same. Every time I listen to Closing Time though, it unleashes a million memories I didn’t even know I had. For that reason, it wins here for me.

#8 That Was A Crazy Game Of Poker (O.A.R.) 3
#9 Way Of Light (Gift Of Gab) 2

Perhaps I’m your typical Generation Y’er but I was immediately put off by the length of Poker. Not sure it’s necessary for any one song to be so long but when obnoxiously long songs are good, they’re really great. I’m in no way itching to do another 8 minutes with OAR though. Way Of Light does nothing for me at all.

    #4 Airplanes (B.o.B. featuring Haylee Williams) 4.5
#13 A Kiss To Build A Dream On (Louis Armstrong) 4

Wow, Airplanes is a number 4 seed?! Crazy days. Ummm…don’t really know what to say about that. I mean, it’s fine, but…well, whatever…it’s just OK. What a weird match up! Umm…Louis is just OK too. Ugh, I can’t believe I’m giving a win to Haylee Williams. Weird, weird.

    #5 Crabbuckit (K-os) 6.5
#12 Cut Your Hair (Pavement) 5

Crabbuckit is a whole lot of fun. Haven’t heard Pavement for a long time…kind of liked it right now but Crabbuckit was just too much fun.

  22. Danno's avatar Danno says:

    #1 Ceremony (New Order) – 5
    #16 Closing Time (Semisonic) -10
Ceremony was perfectly pleasant but otherwise didn’t do much for me. I’m about 10 hours from graduating, so closing time is kind of appropriate. Not sure how well it will hold up in future rounds if it makes it out of this one.

    #8 That Was A Crazy Game Of Poker (O.A.R.) – 8
#9 Way Of Light (Gift Of Gab) – 4
Poker is sort of the quintessential song that brings me back to my college days. Also, I was starting to question my ability to listen to longer songs from the first few rounds of PCT, but I this one kept my attention nicely (though I’ve seen them live several times and I hate when they turn it into a 20 minute version!). Way of Light is one of those songs that I think could sway heavily depending on my mood. Wasn’t feeling it so much tonight.

    #4 Airplanes (B.o.B. featuring Haylee Williams) – 5.5
    #13 A Kiss To Build A Dream On (Louis Armstrong) – 8
I gave Airplanes an extra point because I have a serious crush on Haylee Williams. I decided at the last minute to throw in the Louis Armstrong song as my 8th nomination….seems to have been a good choice.

    #5 Crabbuckit (K-os) – 6
    #12 Cut Your Hair (Pavement) – 5.5
Really digging the beat in Crabbuckit.

Ceremony started great and didn’t really go anywhere. Still pleasant.
As for Closing Time, I wonder if these guys knew when they wrote the song that it would be probably millions of times at bars around the world. I share Guillermo’s memories of late night desperation, and Ryan’s frustrations with having to down the beer I just ordered at last call. These are not fond memories.

    #8 That Was A Crazy Game Of Poker (O.A.R.) – 6
#9 Way Of Light (Gift Of Gab) – 6.5
I am torn over OAR. On the one hand, there were few artists whose fans pissed me off more in college than OAR. I mean, nothing says “revolution!” like a cardigan sweater. Then again, I do love a crazy game of poker. If OAR advances I’ll tell that story. Way of Light was chill.

    #4 Airplanes (B.o.B. featuring Haylee Williams) – 5
    #13 A Kiss To Build A Dream On (Louis Armstrong) – 7.5
In this eclectic field Satchmo could go deeper than last time. (Actually, just listened to Crabbuckit, so, no, it’ll probably lose next round)

    #5 Crabbuckit (K-os) – 8
    #12 Cut Your Hair (Pavement) – 9
Yeahhhhhh, Crabuckit is sweet. Cut Your Hair might be the third most infectious Pavement song, after Stereo and Date with Ikea, both of which were trounced in the first round last tournament. To the nominator- I like the way you think, but this crowd does not dig Pavement.

#1 Ceremony (New Order) 6 over #16 Closing Time (Semisonic) 4.5
New Order gets one point docked for being too long (then again, they usually tend to be), but I never got into Closing Time, so even with that penalty, Ceremony wins.

#8 That Was A Crazy Game Of Poker (O.A.R.) 5.5 over #9 Way Of Light (Gift Of Gab) 8
I listed to A LOT of Sublime my freshman year (yeah, I’m that old), so I wanted to like O.A.R. but it just went on forever. And Way of Light had clapping! I think if you have clapping in your song, there’s a high chance I’m voting for you.

#4 Airplanes (B.o.B. featuring Haylee Williams) 4 over #13 A Kiss To Build A Dream On (Louis Armstrong) 7.5
Overplayed loses to classic. Not much else to say.

    #5 Crabbuckit (K-os) 6.5 over #12 Cut Your Hair (Pavement) 6
See note about clapping above. Both songs were decent, I did like the Weezer-esque Cut Your Hair too.

Poker = 6 – another corny drinking song, but i remember where i was the first time i heard it, and i was underage drinking
Way of the Light = 5

Airplanes = 4 – chick’s voice is Ke$ha-esque. Caucasian mall dialects don’t work for me in pop songs
Kiss Dream On = 8 – this is the right way to sing

Crabbuckit = 4.133 – reminded me of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy in a way
Cut Your Hair = 8 – is this the Pardon the Interruption theme song?

So last night we had a mini listening party and were going to tabulate a bunch of voter’s votes and put down the funniest/wittiest/most intelligent comments. And then Jack got drunk on Saturday afternoon, leaving me to try and recall my votes from last night as to ensure my counting.

    #1 Ceremony (New Order) – 6
    #16 Closing Time (Semisonic) -6.5

#8 That Was A Crazy Game Of Poker (O.A.R.) -3
#9 Way Of Light (Gift Of Gab) -9

Seriously….OAR? Ew. And that is coming from a Dave Matthews fan who should know better than to support shitty frat-boy music.

    #4 Airplanes (B.o.B. featuring Haylee Williams) -4
#13 A Kiss To Build A Dream On (Louis Armstrong)- 7

    #5 Crabbuckit (K-os) 9
#12 Cut Your Hair (Pavement) 3

K-os reminds me of everything inventive that I just love love love about outkast. Awesome. And I will never, ever like Pavement….no good reason it just doesn’t sit well.

#1 Ceremony (New Order) – I have no idea what the lyrics are, even when I’m paying attention, and that kind of turns the whole thing into a song sung by the adults in any Charlie Brown/Peanuts special. Nothing too special about the rest of it. 6.
#16 Closing Time (Semisonic) – I think I’ve heard the opening chords of this song and tuned it out for too many years. 4.5.

#8 That Was A Crazy Game Of Poker (O.A.R.) – Full disclosure: my nomination. All kinds of positive associations here, from an outdoor concert on the last day of classes to an L.A. show that was a key element in a perfect night. O.A.R. as a whole, and this song as an exemplar, remind me that it’s possible to completely lose myself in music. 9.9.
#9 Way Of Light (Gift Of Gab) – I keep getting distracted during this song and can’t remember much about it once it’s done. Listening to it again…the speaking part is the most interesting line, and for me there’s too much going on between those parts. 5.

#4 Airplanes (B.o.B. featuring Haylee Williams) – Is this wistful rap? One of my favorites on the radio over the past year. 7.5.
#13 A Kiss To Build A Dream On (Louis Armstrong) – I’m a sucker for romantic comedies, and this is the quintessential song for rom-com characters to dance to (or to play over the opening credits). Clearly, it’s stood the test of time. 8.

#5 Crabbuckit (K-os) – Addition to the playlist, so my thanks to the nominator. 7.5.
#12 Cut Your Hair (Pavement) – Also an addition…with the intent to go listen to more Pavement. 8.5.
