Once again, we have reached the end of an exciting round. We finished the Play-In Round in mid-December, the Round of 512 in early February, and the Round of 256 a few weeks ago. Less than a month from now this will all be over, just a hazy, thrilling memory.
Without further ado, let us close out with Division P. Listen at Grooveshark and vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com before 8pm on Friday. Then we’ll begin the Salty 64 on Saturday.
#1 Piano Man (Billy Joel) vs. #8 Gimme Shelter (Rolling Stones)
#4 Where Did You Sleep Last Night (Nirvana) vs. #12 Holiday (Green Day). This is Green Day’s last stand.
#2 Wavin’ Flag (K’Naan) vs. #7 Sultans of Swing (Dire Straits). Loser goes home here. Will the upstart K’Naan take out Mark Knopfler and co.?
#3 I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor) vs. #6 No Woman No Cry (Bob Marley). Last days of disco, or end of reggae? One genre must die tonight.
#1 Piano Man (Billy Joel) 4 vs. #8 Gimme Shelter (Rolling Stones) 8 I just learned that the chorus to Gimme Shelter is “Rape and Murder.” How can I let a song like Piano Man trump that?
#4 Where Did You Sleep Last Night (Nirvana) 8 vs. #12 Holiday (Green Day) 2
#2 Wavin’ Flag (K’Naan) 1 vs. #7 Sultans of Swing (Dire Straits) 7
#3 I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor) 6 vs. #6 No Woman No Cry (Bob Marley) 9
#1 Piano Man (Billy Joel) 9.5
#8 Gimme Shelter (Rolling Stones) 6
#4 Where Did You Sleep Last Night (Nirvana) 5.5
#12 Holiday (Green Day). 9
#2 Wavin’ Flag (K’Naan) 10
#7 Sultans of Swing (Dire Straits). 7
#3 I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor) 7.5
#6 No Woman No Cry (Bob Marley) 5.5
Piano Man (Billy Joel) 7.5
Gimme Shelter (Rolling Stones) 6
Where Did You Sleep Last Night (Nirvana) 7.5
Holiday (Green Day) 6
Wavin’ Flag (K’Naan) 7
Sultans of Swing (Dire Straits) 9.5
I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor) 8
No Woman No Cry (Bob Marley) 6.5
Gloria’s sentiment is so fierce and I have no idea what Marley is talking about, so I’m voting disco tonight.
#1 Piano Man (Billy Joel) 7.5
#8 Gimme Shelter (Rolling Stones) 6.5
#4 Where Did You Sleep Last Night (Nirvana) 6.5
#12 Holiday (Green Day) 4
#2 Wavin’ Flag (K’Naan) 7 [this jumped the shark for me in the first chorus, because it sounded insincere… and then the second verse comes around and it seems current and meaningful.]
#7 Sultans of Swing (Dire Straits) 6.5
#3 I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor) 3
#6 No Woman No Cry (Bob Marley) 10 [this isn’t a comparison as such. I just felt No Woman No Cry was a 10 today and Gaynor was a 3, not that they per se needed a 7 point spread.]
Piano Man (Billy Joel) 8
Gimme Shelter (Rolling Stones) 4
Gimme Shelter didn’t have the emotional depth of Piano Man.
Where Did You Sleep Last Night (Nirvana) 2
Holiday (Green Day) 7.8
Nirvana did nothing for me. Holiday hit me right where I needed it.
Wavin’ Flag (K’Naan) 10
Sultans of Swing (Dire Straits). 3
On first listen, Sultans was at a 7 and Waving Flag was at an 8. Then later in the day I gave it another shot, and Dire Straits fell completely flat. K’Naan got a smile on my face, hope to keep them alive.
I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor) 8.5
No Woman No Cry (Bob Marley) 9.5
These are both top 50 for me easy.
first of all, goddamn April Fools Day- Grooveshark in 3D is hurting my face.
Piano Man 7
Gimme Shelter 8.5
Stones hit better to start my Friday and get geared up for the weekend.
Where Did You Sleep Last Night 7.1
Holiday 7
Nirvana by a nose. But on Holiday, I got a really good question from Sam on Wednesday night. “I don’t understand why you and Janos let Golden Slumbers Medley compete as a Medley, but don’t let Holiday compete with Boulevard of Broken Dreams as a medley. I mean, they were originally as equally an intended medley as Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End, look it up.” This has come up before, and it is what it is at this point, but we should figure that out, because now that I look into it, H/BOBD could have been competing together, link below:

Wavin’ Flag 7.4
Sultans of Swing 10
Wavin’ Flag is great, but here’s another song that got 10’s early on from me, but is slipping with the rounds. The “then it goes back” ‘s are starting to be not so captivating. Plus, I gotta defer to the song that’s been top 50 from age 18 to 28- I really, really love SoS. It always seemed like an interactive narrative to me, wherein each instrumental verse break is built into the story Knopfler is telling about a band that plays cause they want to and they love it, even when the public ain’t into it. It’s got an air of “fuck you guys, we’re on the stage, so deal with it and maybe you’ll learn something.” I dig it.
No Woman No Cry 5
I Will Survive 8
Bob Marley most definitely did not hit. Disco did.
Hm…I can see how a song would burn out on you if you play it 40 times in one road trip, bro.
Also, in response to Sam, I’m not sure Boulevard of Broken Dreams would actually help- that song annoys a lot of people, and it gets old fast. Holiday was played on the radio as a stand alone song, as was Boulevard, where as Golden Slumbers Medley is played as one. I guess that’s my own Q104.3 interpretation of things.
Ha, on K’Naan, true- I don’t know if anyone else is guilty of this, but now that I actually have the Box Set as playlists on my iPod, I think overlistening may be starting to mess with my scores.
On the Golden Slumbers Medley thing though, I dunno…I was listening to the I Am Sam soundtrack for the first time in awhile, and heard the Ben Folds cover start and he only did the first part- so it’s not necessarily consistently patched. And as for the BoBD annoying comment, I’m going to respectfully disagree- when American Idiot first came out, I thought Holiday was hella annoying but liked Boulevard. BoBD as a single went double platinum and was voted Reader’s Choice best song of the decade by the magazine that will not be named.
This discourse actually makes me even more excited for the Summer PCT.

I actually think K’Naan is getting better and better with every listen, but I haven’t neared 40 listens yet. Guillermo, any chance you have non-itunes versions of some of these tracks? I’d love to toss the box set on my ipod, just missing too many songs. SoS has just run its course on me… it was actually going to get about a 4 until the late solo which pumped me up.
#3 I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor) 5
#6 No Woman No Cry (Bob Marley) 7.3
You will not survive. You still should be afraid, you should be petrified.
Piano Man (Billy Joel) 8.3
Gimme Shelter (Rolling Stones) 8.6
Where Did You Sleep Last Night (Nirvana) 7.3

What a monster second verse. Gripping, poetic, harmonious.
Sultans of Swing (Dire Straits) 7.4
I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor) 8.5
Definitely the highest score I’ve given it. It was the perfect bubbly pop for the end of the work week.
