Living the Dream Music Tournament: Day 6 (Play-in Round)

A couple of today’s match-ups tend to rock a little harder than we’ve been used to, including a classic Pearl Jam vs. Nirvana showdown.  But then again, the hard-rockers may not  love Bette Midler vs. Whitney Houston.  Based on the scores I’ve been seeing the last few days, I think most of you will like that.   Listen at Grooveshark.   I think all of today’s links should work.

* Please listen to the studio version of Alive– Grooveshark’s version is live.

Whipping Post (Allman Brothers) vs. Like a Stone (Audioslave)

Lookin’ Out My Back Door (CCR) vs. Wave of Mutilation (Pixies)

Alive (Pearl Jam)  vs.  Lounge Act (Nirvana)

For What It’s Worth (Buffalo Springfield) vs. Let’s Get Together (Youngbloods)

From a Distance (Bette Midler) vs. One Moment of Time (Whitney Houston)

Living the Dream Music Tournament: Day 3 Results

Day 3 results are in:

Waiting for My Man (Velvet Underground) def Sweet Avenue (Jets to Brazil), called early.  Hidden gems can be sleepers in music tournaments, but we haven’t seen any yet.

Touch Me (Doors) def. I’ll Believe In Anything (Wolf Parade), 87-66.   The Wolf Parade song was highly touted by some friends of mine, but the Doors brought them down easily.

Gravel Pit (Wu-tang Clan) def. Peruvian Cocaine (Immortal Technique), 83-72.  Can’t stop the Wu. This song could be a force in future rounds too.

Don’t Fear the Reaper (Blue Oyster Cult) def. Margaritaville (Jimmy Buffett) =85-69.  There were some Buffett fans out there, but you always need more cowbell.

Higher Ground (Stevie Wonder) def. Scarlet Begonias (Grateful Dead), called for Stevie Wonder.  Stevie should be a force throughout the tournament- scores for Higher Ground were very high.

Other than Higher Ground, you guys weren’t feeling most of these songs very much.  Keep in mind that the Play-in Round involves a lot of recommendations from people like yourselves, so next time you push for a song’s inclusion, think for a moment about how it would fare before the populace.  That said, I think you’ll like Day 5’s match-ups (just posted) a lot better.

Living the Dream Music Tournament: Day 2 Results

Day 2 featured three incredibly tight battles and two blow-outs.

Little Birds (Bob Marley) def. In the Summertime (Mongo Jerry), 100-96.  In the battle of chillaxing, these songs see-sawed till the end.

Basket Case (Green Day) def. Boys on the Docks (Dropkick Murphys), 105-102.  Nostalgia triumphed over traditional punk in this narrow contest.

Stop in the Name of Love (Supremes) def. Big Yellow Taxi (Joni Mitchell), 94-93.  People went pretty partisan on this battle of two of music’s top ladies, Diana and Joni.

Crazy (Gnarls Barkely) def. Optimistic (Radiohead), called early.  Radiohead fans complained I picked an unworthy track from the Kid A era, but they will have more chances.

Unchained Melody (Righteous Brothers) def. Catch the Wind (Donovan), called early.  I agree with many of you that Unchained Melody is a great song- but going into it I was worried that some of you would be cheesed out by it.  Not the case.

Living the Dream Music Tournament: Day 1 Results

Thank you to all who voted on the match-ups from Day 1. The winners below will advance to the round of 512. Still a long road ahead.

The most pitched battle of Day 1 was between Beck and Little Richard, who  /   At one point, this match-up was tied 94-94, before late breaking votes went for Little Richard.

Long Tall Sally (Little Richard) def. Sexx Laws (Beck), 119-116.

Call Me (Blondie) def. Man in the Mirror (Michael Jackson), 128-119. This was in some ways a referendum on MJ, and the vote was the most bitter of Day 1.  To MJ fans, fear not, he has other songs left in the tournament.

Cannonball (Breeders) def. Sliver (Nirvana), 104-97.  I should explain, for those questioning Sliver’s inclusion, that I was reluctant to put more than two songs from any album in the tournament, a rule that affects Nirvana more than most.  Nevertheless, this a punchy, early punk/grunge song, and its inclusion was merited.

Son of a Preacherman (Dusty Springfield) def. Angie (Rolling Stones), 127-117.  When Tim was over at my apartment, he refused to cast a vote on this match-up. “Preacherman should have been in the Round of 512 automatically.”  Well, Tim was right.  This song cruised with very high scores.

The Rising (Bruce Springsteen) def. Gone Away (Offspring), 96-89. Wow, you guys did not like this match-up. My apologies, even a working clock is wrong twice a day.  For those who think The Rising was Bruce overload, it’s his only song from after 1984, and his performance of it at Ground Zero in 2002 is one of the more emotional performances I’ve ever seen.

U.S Second Circuit: John Lennon Loves America

Tonight we watched an amazing PBS documentary on John Lennon in the 1970s called LennoNYC.  There are awesome studio clips, interviews, and scenes of love between him, Yoko and Sean.  But what struck me was this incredible Second Circuit opinion ending the 4-year INS crusade (started by Richard Nixon) to get him deported, and issuing him his green card:

Before closing with the traditional words of disposition, we feel it appropriate to express our faith that the result we have reached in this case not only is consistent with the language and purpose of the narrow statutory provision we construe, but also furthers the intent of the immigration laws in a far broader sense. The excludable aliens statute is but an exception, albeit necessary, to the traditional tolerance of a nation founded and built by immigrants. If, in our two hundred years of independence, we have in some measure realized our ideals, it is in large part because we have always found a place for those committed to the spirit of liberty and willing to help implement it. Lennon’s four-year battle to remain in our country is testimony to his faith in this American dream.
John Winston Ono Lennon v. INS (1975)

When people talk nobly about a past we’ve lost, they’re often being disingenuously nostalgic.  But read a passage like that, and you just think, “wow”.
