Round of 64 Kickoff (Day 1 of 8)
“Somewhere Over The Rainbow” by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole: Somewhere over the rainbow sums up our aspirations to create and visit fantastic locales. It was the song played for my first dance at my wedding, and set a beautiful tone for our life together. Plus, a 300 lb guy with a ukelele? Awesome.

Covers Tournament Bracket Now Set
Yeah, I made the bracket. What up. No seriously, check out where your song landed. Aiko and I are working on a sweet way to make the coming round voter interactive. In that vein, eight of you can expect an e-mail from me shortly. Round of 64 starts tomorrow night.
Last Results: Round of 128, Day 16
In the workplace whenever I have application deadlines and not too many numbers in, I always pray that I’ll get a slew in the closing moments. I hoped the same tonight, and the voters did not disappoint- in a crazy, crazy way. Some sure wins got the tables turned last second, one back and forth bout went to the last punch of the 15th. I can already predict the angry comments in response to what I’m about to report, so let’s just get to it. Continue reading

Results: Round of 128 Day 15

Voters showed no love for Jonathan Richman, so I show him some in this post.
Did anyone else have a really brutal week? Our nominations this round sure did. And it was such a brutal week personally that I didn’t even manage to vote on my own post or for my own nominee. Not that my vote could have secured a victory for “The Origin of Love,” by Jonathan Richman. I’m not surprised at its loss; in this tournament I only nominated songs that I truly love, without regard for their potential mass appeal, and if you’ve never heard Richman his appeal is not necessarily immediate. But the thing is, when you love him, you love him. You feel about him the way people feel about Mr. Rogers, and for much the same reasons. And when you have posting privileges, you can write swan songs, so let me tell you about Jonathan Richman.

Results! Round of 128, Day 14
I have a few friends staying with me this weekend, so I am a little behind schedule in getting the results post up. Sorry! Votes came in from 21 people for Day 14 and we had some close matches, some blow outs, and a few super low averages. We’re almost to the end of Round of 128 – so let’s see the scores!
David Gray is feeling good about his win! (or would if he knew about it...)
First, up David Gray’s “In the Morning” defeats “When You Say Nothing at All” by Ronan Keating,106 to 71.2, with a 5.05 average . People were not very impressed with Ronan.
Covers Tournament: Round of 128, Day 16 (LAST DAY)

Like this.
Votes due by Monday, October 24th at 8:00 PM (3 days to vote!): Grooveshark link here, except for “All Tomorrow’s Parties.” You’ve heard some grumbling the last three posts or so on how it was becoming increasingly hard to figure out match-ups based on logic. You ain’t seen nothing until you see the following puzzles, i.e., the last 4 matches of the tournament.
Puzzle 1: If I were doing a “New Speedway Boogie”, what sort of wheel would be the opposite of allowing maximum speed down such a speedway? Continue reading

Results! Round of 128, Day 13

Our high scorers showing some respect for cover king Hendrix
Day 13 may have cast some unluckiness on our competitors- while I can safely say that all four of these matches went back and forth to the bitter end, none of them rose to the heights seen in recent days by Cash, Cocker, and Santana. But no disrespect to our winners, as we are back to the 20s in voters and all opinions together matter- let’s get to it. Surprise high score of the day goes to the Texan lady trio of the Dixie Chicks- “Travelin’ Soldier” defeats “Jolene” 124.4-115.6 with a 6.22. I only discovered tonight that it was their spoken intro to a performance of “Travelin’ Soldier” when they famously expressed shame over Dubya’s Texas roots and were disowned and ostracized by both Lipton Iced Tea and the American South in the consequent months. The Wiki article also mentions two of my personal music heroes coming to the defense of the Dixie Chicks- when Bruce Springsteen and Merle Haggard both have your back, you gotta be doing something right. Covers Tournament Round of 128: Day 15
Well, lovelies, we’re almost through the Round of 128, and none too soon. There’s been some angst about the mediocrity of this round, but that’s been true of the first round of every music tournament: there’s a lot of chafe. Things generally start getting compelling in the round of 64, which awaits us in just a few more days. We’ll see half of these nominees there.

Covers Tournament: Round of 128, Day 12 Results
Pretty much everyone found something to like with these eight songs, and we may have even picked up two new heavyweight contenders in Santana‘s “Black Magic Woman” and Joe Cocker‘s “With a Little Help From My Friends.”
Despite an early lead, Cake could not hold on, and Like a Rollin’ Stone (Rolling Stones) took out War Pigs, 112.3-101.4 . The consensus was that the Rolling Stones didn’t live up to the hype, and kind of phoned this one in, but they still pick up the W.
Black Magic Woman (Santana) def. Little Wing (Stevie Ray Vaughan), 136.6-112.8. There was respect for Stevie, but it couldn’t topple one of Santana’s classic works, which makes the Wall of 10s thanks to tournament power couple, Progenitor and Eileen. Black Magic Woman is also the third highest scoring song to date. Continue reading

Okay this isn't the version nominated, but who doesn't love Young Frankenstein??
Votes due Friday, October 21th at 11 PM EST:
Welp, the time for themes has come and gone. Now you just get songs that maaaaybe have something in common. Or just song match-ups that seem to make sense to me, and to my friend Flannery, who helped me make today’s playlist.
Grooveshark link is here, happy listening!
