Pretty much everyone found something to like with these eight songs, and we may have even picked up two new heavyweight contenders in Santana‘s “Black Magic Woman” and Joe Cocker‘s “With a Little Help From My Friends.”
Despite an early lead, Cake could not hold on, and Like a Rollin’ Stone (Rolling Stones) took out War Pigs, 112.3-101.4 . The consensus was that the Rolling Stones didn’t live up to the hype, and kind of phoned this one in, but they still pick up the W.
Black Magic Woman (Santana) def. Little Wing (Stevie Ray Vaughan), 136.6-112.8. There was respect for Stevie, but it couldn’t topple one of Santana’s classic works, which makes the Wall of 10s thanks to tournament power couple, Progenitor and Eileen. Black Magic Woman is also the third highest scoring song to date.
Magnificent Sanctuary Band (Jerry Garcia Band) def. Let Down (Easy Star All Stars), 112.9-103.7. No question Jerry was buoyed by 10s from ASF and Dane, making the Wall, but most voters gave both of these songs dependable mid-level scores.
Joe Cocker was picked by Mike Corbett to go all the way before the tournament, and he didn’t even nominate “With a Little Help From My Friends” (Mark O did). That may or may not bear out, but Cocker cruised over Josh Hogge‘s “Ain’t No Sunshine,” 131.6-103.3. Cocker currently holds the fifth highest average of the tournament.
