Sorry for the late post- the snowquester was just so crazy. Fighting for survival in 2 inches in slush got me off track on prepping this. Moving on to good news- we have reached the last day of matches for the Round! We are down to 36 songs left alive in our battle, 18 on each side. Time to snip the last two fallen challengers from the left and the right brackets so we can get going to the Round of 32!
Votes are due by Friday, March 9th at 11:00 PM EST. Playlist is here, full rules and philosophy here, and the tournament bracket is here. See you in the comments!
Best Track Ones
“What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye, What’s Going On vs.
“Blue Suede Shoes” by Elvis Presley, Elvis Presley
“Come Together” by The Beatles, Abbey Road vs.
“Rehab” by Amy Winehouse, Back In Black
Best Radio Songs
“On The Radio” by Donna Summer
“Heard It On The Radio” by The Bird and the Bee
“Radio” by Rancid
“Please Play This Song On The Radio” by NOFX
Results from last round:
“Baba O’Riley” stomped all over “Tamacun,” 72.2-56. Bob Dylan-James Brown was a little closer, but “Tangled Up In Blue” comes out on top 63.4-58. Chuck Berry is looking super strong out of the gates with his “Roll Over Beethoven” win on Gaslight Anthem. With a full point higher of an average than #1 seed Rock and Roll Radio, we’ve suddenly got a compelling Ramones-Berry match for the next round.
Best Track Ones
9- “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye, What’s Going On vs.
8- “Blue Suede Shoes” by Elvis Presley, Elvis Presley
Amazing matchup. Edge to Marvin
10- “Come Together” by The Beatles, Abbey Road vs.
8- “Rehab” by Amy Winehouse, Back In Black
Amy, Imma let you finish but Come Together is one of the best side one track ones of all time.
Best Radio Songs
5.5- “On The Radio” by Donna Summer
6.5- “Heard It On The Radio” by The Bird and the Bee
Radio songs should go first in the playlist because by the time I’ve listened to the Side Ones I’m exhausted. Both nice songs, but nothing that blew me away.
6- “Radio” by Rancid
7.5- “Please Play This Song On The Radio” by NOFX
Nostalgia for my punk youth. Saw NOFX a lot. Loved this song. Love Rancid, not crazy about Radio.
Best Track Ones
“What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye, What’s Going On vs.
“Blue Suede Shoes” by Elvis Presley, Elvis Presley
7/7 I’m not going to even remotely think I can vote on this one. They’re both so good.
“Come Together” by The Beatles, Abbey Road vs.
“Rehab” by Amy Winehouse, Back In Black
10/3 – Amy Winehouse is overrated in my book. Adele has made her sound even less as special as some people claim it to be. However, I have always believed Come Together is an ironic title for a band that was falling apart, and a damn fine example of what Lennon’s vocals could be. It’s a perfect song. I don’t turn it off. Ever. Any version, but the original is the only 10.
Best Radio Songs
“On The Radio” by Donna Summer
“Heard It On The Radio” by The Bird and the Bee
5.5/5.4 These were both pretty good. Both reminded me of warmer times on this dreary day.
“Radio” by Rancid
“Please Play This Song On The Radio” by NOFX
2/4.5-Please change the station. Rancid’s vocals are atrocious. NOFX is catchy and fun…for the 90s.
Me and C, post snow-storm
“What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye, What’s Going On vs.
“Blue Suede Shoes” by Elvis Presley, Elvis Presley
Me: 9.5: 6.8
C: 6.8 : 7.3
Forgot how much I loved “What’s Goin On”. I’ve always found this generation of pop stars distasteful, perhaps because I’m because an old man, but here we’ve got one of the biggest pop singers of his time singing about war and poverty as one of his biggest radio singles.
“Come Together” by The Beatles, Abbey Road vs.
“Rehab” by Amy Winehouse, Back In Black
Me: 8.2 : 7.3
C 7 : 8.3
“On The Radio” by Donna Summer
“Heard It On The Radio” by The Bird and the Bee
Me: 7.4 : 7.1
C: 7.9 : 6
“Radio” by Rancid

Me: 7 : 7.5
C: 6.9 : 6
What’s going on – 7.5
Blue Suede Shoes – 8
I’m almost appalled at myself for putting Elvis over Marvin, but the rules dictate I vote on my mood and I’m definitely feeling Elvis’ pop over Marvin’s sultry musings this Friday morning.
Come Together – 9
Rehab – 7.2
*just paused voting to listen to the rest of Abbey Road.
On the Radio – 2
Heard it on the Radio – 1
snooze-fest.
Radio – 4.5
Please play this song on the radio – 5.6
ok, now I’m awake!
