Next set of matches include two of my absolute favorite songs that serve as solid life soundtracks to making moves in one’s life. And since I gave my two weeks notice at my job this morning and plan on headed West in a few short weeks, I’m all the more excited for them. Votes are due by Wednesday, March 6th at 11:00 PM EST. Best Track One, Side One
10- “Baba O’Riley” (The Who, Who’s Net) vs.
7- “Tamacun” (Rodrigo y Gabriela, Rodrigo y Gabriela)
Well, I know what I’ll be doing with the rest of my morning. Dear Spotify, bring me all your The Who. I now understand how Tamacun made it through the play in round. Quite good, but imagine putting Baba O’Riley on your turntable for the first time. Damn.
8- “Tangled Up In Blue” (Bob Dylan, Blood On The Tracks) vs.
10- “Sex Machine” (James Brown, Sex Machine)
I figured The Who would ruin me for the rest of the day since I loved it so much but I was singing and bouncing around in the car listening to James Brown. Another moment where I envy the anticipation and exhilaration of someone buying this record and spinning it for the first time and being blown away off the bat.
Best Song About The Radio
7- “’59 Sound” (Gaslight Anthem) vs.
9- “Roll Over Beethoven” (Chuck Berry)
I said Goddamn Chuck, that’s some good rock and roll.
4- “Guerilla Radio” (Rage Against The Machine) vs.
4- “Radio Freq” (Dead Prez)
I couldn’t get into either song this morning.
Honestly, I’ve been listening to the first six songs of today’s matchups since I got to work on repeat and haven’t stopped. So good.
“Baba O’Riley” (The Who, Who’s Net) vs. “Tamacun” (Rodrigo y Gabriela, Rodrigo y Gabriela) =
8 to 8
“Tangled Up In Blue” (Bob Dylan, Blood On The Tracks) vs. “Sex Machine” (James Brown, Sex Machine) = 10 to 8
I always liked in Tangled Up in Blue at 4:04 someone missed their chord and they kept it anyway
“’59 Sound” (Gaslight Anthem) vs. “Roll Over Beethoven” (Chuck Berry) =
“ Guerrilla Radio” (Rage Against The Machine) vs. “Radio Freq” (Dead Prez) = 6 to 3
The first RATM record meant an incredible amount to me in middle school and opened my eyes to a lot of things I would’ve never come across that early otherwise.
Like Dead Prez, however, their semi-incoherent leftist sloganeering left a lot to be desired as time went on. (What happened after Dead Prez’s “Hip-Hop”? Where’d they go?) The video with Michael Moore where they played in front of the Stock Exchange was cool, but like Michael Moore, I think a lot of it was a desire to be on camera.
oops, let’s see, gaslight anthem = 5 to 7

When you drive into the unknown, you better start that road trip anthology with a killer opening track. If I were Rodrigo o Gabriela (o on purpose) I’d just be happy to be here.
“Tangled Up In Blue” (Bob Dylan, Blood On The Tracks) 8.7
“Sex Machine” (James Brown, Sex Machine) 7.2
I’ve lost myself in Tangled Up In Blue a number of times in my life. Not today though. Still a win, but not as big a win as it once might have been. Sex Machine is fun but you can only appreciate a riff so many times.
