This should be a fascinating set- every matchup features contrasting styles and moods. Are you feeling fired up and joyful or mellow and introspective? We’ll see how the votes play out. Listen here and vote by commenting below by MIDNIGHT EST on Friday.
And with this post I sign off for an adventure in Europe. Would like nothing better than to pull together a room full of voters in Transylvania.
Big Pimpin’ (Jay Z feat. UZG) vs. Skinny Love (Bon Iver)
In the first round, Skinny Love outscored Big Pimpin’ by 9, but in the second round, Big Pimpin’ outscored Skinny Love by 8. Since this voting is going to go down largely on Thursday night and Friday during work, the result will come down to how many of you are in peacock weekend mode vs. how many of you are in warm introspective moods.
Someone Great (LCD Soundsystem) vs. Your Love (Outfield)
I love LCD, but the aggressive retro sampling dance tracks don’t make for great “headphones at your work desk” music. That’s why I’ve chosen this lovely little slow song. The lyrics are pretty moving, you can tell that something’s heavy going down, but James Murphy has left the details deliberately nebulous. – Janos
Thinkin’ Bout Something (Hanson) vs. Little Bit of Everything (Dawes)
I almost talked myself out of nominating a Hanson song, because I didn’t want to out myself as a 30 year-old teeny bopper. But I am. I loved Hanson when I was 12 and I love them now — and I’m so glad their music has grown up a bit along the way. Thinking ‘Bout Somethin’ is a fun song. Playing this joint makes me happy, and I love the little references to other great songs in the lyrics. (Listen! They’re like Google Easter Eggs!) And you should check out the video too — yay Tulsa! – Lindsay
Just Like Heaven (Cure) vs. Foundations (Kate Nash)
The Cure averaged a whopping 7.68 last round, a full 1.5 better than Kate Nash, so the British lady has her work cut out for her.
I must have listened to this song hundreds of times in the late winter/spring of 2008 and it’s still one of my most-listened to songs on my ipod. I had been out of college for a year and still in a college relationship that was crumbling so this song really resonated with me. Plus, it’s really fun to sing in an accent. – Meghan

5- Big Pimpin’ (Jay Z feat. UZG) vs.
8- Skinny Love (Bon Iver)
I finally got sick of Big Pimpin’. Maybe it was just that it kicked things off, but every once in a while I really listen to some of the rap that came out at that time and just say “nope”.
4- Someone Great (LCD Soundsystem) vs.
10- Your Love (Outfield)
I try, but I just can’t get into this LCD song. On the flip side, Your Love is to me what Journey is to most people. My unapologetic, belting it out with the top down jam. Perfection for this AM where I’m trapped indoors.
6- Thinkin’ Bout Something (Hanson) vs.
9- Little Bit of Everything (Dawes)
The shine wore off of Hanson this round as well. Not sure what. Maybe it just sounds a little too polished for my mood. Dawes on the other hand I love. Lots of contrast this round, just like Janos said.
9- Just Like Heaven (Cure) vs.
4- Foundations (Kate Nash)
Again, sorry Kate, and I’mmuna let you finish, but The Cure made on of the greatest jams of all time.
Big Pimpin’ (Jay Z feat. UZG) vs. Skinny Love (Bon Iver): 7.5 : 5
My friend was just at the Barclays show and said it was unbelievable. I still don’t get Bon Iver…
Someone Great (LCD Soundsystem) vs. Your Love (Outfield): 9.5 : 6
Your Love is a fun song, I’ll belt it with anyone at an 80s party, but it’s not a particularly interesting song. The pair provide an interesting contrast.
Thinkin’ Bout Something (Hanson) vs. Little Bit of Everything (Dawes): 5.5 : 5.5
Not feeling either of these songs, though I would be amused by a Hanson Sweet 16 appearance.
Just Like Heaven (Cure) vs. Foundations (Kate Nash): 9.4 : 7.2
Just Like Heaven might be my favorite song of the tournament that I didn’t nominate myself. Would be fine with it going all the way.
That said, Kate Nash was quite pleasant, and I look forward to hearing more of her stuff in the future.
Big Pimpin’ (Jay Z feat. UZG) vs. Skinny Love (Bon Iver) = 9 to 4
I’ll be forever mackin
Someone Great (LCD Soundsystem) vs. Your Love (Outfield) = 7 to 8
Damn, I really like the LCD track, but strangely enough, the Outfield holds up better over repeated listens
Thinkin’ Bout Something (Hanson) vs. Little Bit of Everything (Dawes) = 6 to 6.5
Just Like Heaven (Cure) vs. Foundations (Kate Nash) = 5 to 4.5

Big Pimpin’ (Jay Z feat. UZG) vs. Skinny Love (Bon Iver) 6.5/8
Big Pimpin is kinda fun, but Skinny Love makes my heart flutter a little.
Someone Great (LCD Soundsystem) vs. Your Love (Outfield) 6.5/9.5
Someone Great was at an 8, but I checked to see how much time was left around the 4.5 minute mark… I guess one thing never changes for me from one tournament to the next — I’m musically impatient. But I L O V E Your Love. I think it could be a 10 minute song and I wouldn’t dock it. 🙂
Thinkin’ Bout Something (Hanson) vs. Little Bit of Everything (Dawes) 9.8/5
I just had a desk dance party. Thanks, self, for the great song nomination! And then… buzzkill.

Thinkin’ Bout Something (Hanson) – 6
i’m getting less excited about this one, but still fun
Little Bit of Everything (Dawes) – 5
still just can’t get into this one, especially the intro which sounds like the intro to some sort of cheesy “let’s tell you a heartwarming story” radio show. it’s funny because if you just showed me these band names i’d probably score them 8-2, dawes.
Just Like Heaven (Cure) – 8
classic for a reason

Little Bit of Everything gets better and better as the song goes on.
Just Like Heaven (Cure) 7.25
Foundations (Kate Nash) 7.5
Just Like Heaven is great for sure, but not my favorite Cure (not to pull a Daddy-O) and I dunno, I’ve heard it a lot of times.

Someone Great (LCD Soundsystem) vs. Your Love (Outfield) 7.8 / 6
Thinkin’ Bout Something (Hanson) vs. Little Bit of Everything (Dawes) 4.5 / 4.6
That Dawes song is a little Ken Burnsy. And then a little country in a not so great way.
