Last Band Standing: Game 3 (Order Switch)

Ponyboy discusses this nailbiting loss with fellow Outsiders

Three out of three of our Royal Rumble potential finalists are undefeated, which means Game 3 strategies are out and about. Let’s review.

Coach Dan seems to be comfortable sticking with the deep cuts, and seems to be winning the gambit. Allman Brothers’ “Pony Boy” (which I can only assume is an ode to “The Outsiders”- the only thing cooler than being named Ponyboy is being named Ponyboy with a brother named Soda Pop, a friend named Dallas, and a best friend that’s also the Karate Kid) falls to “In God’s Country,” 67.8-66.5. U2 pulls ahead to 2-0. Dan stays strategic with another deep cut, and Coach George+Wife throw out a classic trying to avoid falling down 3 games.

Folks, AC/DC is in some trouble here now having dropped 2 in a row. “Dancing Days” ekes out “Girl’s Got Rhythm” 83.2-81.6. We’ve been seeing some block Zepp voting from the Cantonese and their allies- only time will tell if Coach Joe can overcome and finally put a dent in the unstoppable band looking for its 5th victim.

In similar trouble is Atmosphere, whose “Shhh” falls to “Cotton Fields,” 69.7-66.6. The Beach Boys claim the largest margin of victory this round and look to be in the firmest control as we go forward.

Listen to our Game 3 match-ups here (the order switches for Games 3 to 5) and submit your votes by Thursday, May 10th at 11:00 PM.

The Number One (Atmosphere) vs. Fun Fun Fun (Beach Boys)

About g-mo

The day I was born, Michael Jackson's Thriller album was at the top of the Billboard 200. I've been trying my best to live up to that expectation ever since.

This is a great U2 song, though I’m partial to the live version off of the Rattle and Hum soundtrack, but it can’t compare to my favorite Allman’s song.

Battle Of Evermore (Led Zeppelin) XX
    Sin City (AC/DC) XX
    Great Zeppelin song.

    The Number One (Atmosphere) 8
Fun Fun Fun (The Beach Boys) 6.5
This is a great Atmosphere song. I love it. The lyrics hit home for me. I know this is a classic song by the Beach Boys, but I’m not a fan of it. Sorry Janos.

Well, this may be a bit of a drubbing. Midnight Rider is a classic. Strong pick.

    Battle Of Evermore: 8
    Sin City: 6.5
I like the ACDC selection, but that Zeppelin track is awesome.

    7.8 : 8.5
Love both of these songs, Rider was just a better morning listen.

Battle of Evermore (Led Zeppelin) vs. Sin City (AC/DC)
    6.5 : 6.5
AC/DC gets plus .5 because there aren’t enough good songs about Vegas.

The Number One (Atmosphere) vs. Fun Fun Fun (Beach Boys): N/A

    Bullet The Blue Sky 2
    Midnight Rider 7

    Battle Of Evermore 6
    Sin City 5.5
In response to the Cantonese allies comment, I would like to point out that nothing would bring me greater joy than smiting Adrock with a mighty Danno hammer of yore. There are a dozen or so ACDC songs which, in my book, would destroy ANY Led Zeppelin song, let alone the limiting selection Adrock has left to choose from. I don’t know if Joe is a little over confident that Adrock is running out of good songs and trying to hang on to the hits for the next round, but Girls Got Rhythm, The Jack and Sin City? Come on. Bring me You Shook Me, TNT or Highway to Hell and Zepp is done.

    The Number One 2.5
    Fun Fun Fun 8

  10. Bullet The Blue Sky (U2) 4.5
Midnight Rider (Allman Brothers Band) 8

U2 had no chance. Well played, Sam.

Battle of Evermore (Led Zeppelin) 6.5
    Sin City (AC/DC) 6.8

    The Number One (Atmosphere) 5
Fun Fun Fun (Beach Boys) 8.5

Say what you want about the cheezy sand-and-sun songs, I f-ing love this.

    • Mirna says:

The Jack (AC/DC) 6Bring It On Home (Led Zeppelin)5.5Close, but ACDC edges it simply beacsue the intro of bring it on home is too long. I Can Hear Music (The Beach Boys) 5The Last To Say (Atmosphere) 4.5Another close one, but I have to give to to BBJust Ain’t Easy (Allman Brothers Band) Lots of naked dudes on the youtube video Vertigo (U2) UNO! DOS! TRES! CATORCE!! Wait What? Bono no habla espanol

  11. George says:

Bullet The Blue Sky (U2) vs. Midnight Rider (Allman Brothers Band) xx

Battle of Evermore (Led Zeppelin) vs. Sin City (AC/DC) 8.5 – 7
There is no better time for a nerd coming out party than when commenting on a Zeppelin song that includes JpJ on the mandolin and lyrics referencing Lord of the Rings. Seriously though, the sheer musical talent that JpJ displays switching from mind-blowing bass to picking and strumming a mandolin in the lead is downright confounding. Also, “The drums will shake the castles walls; the Ring Wraiths will ride in black,” is the poetry that I want to hear and enjoy, always. For AC/DC this was good. AC/DC gives you that fulfilling drive more consistently than any other band in history. I can’t rightfully put this on the same level as Evermore, though.

The Number One (Atmosphere) vs. Fun Fun Fun (Beach Boys) 6.5 – 5.5
This is a good Atmosphere song. I don’t really know what it is. They’ve got really good lyrics and great delivery, especially here. There’s something about it that’s just enjoyable to listen to. These guys are just good story-tellers. I’ll just reference Guillermo, above, for Beach Boys. I just can’t take the cheezy, sun-and-sand songs. The harmonizing is impressive, as always, with the BB and the guitar intro is definitely cool. But beyond that it just doesn’t do much for me.

  12. Greg Burch says:

Bullet The Blue Sky (U2): 6
Midnight Rider (Allman Brothers Band): 9

I absolutely love Bono’s intensity in this song, it’s solid with some overt political references to arms dealings. Bono definitely doesn’t hold back, Bullet The Blue Sky definitely has an edge to it. In the end there are just only so many religious references I can take after a while. Midnight Rider takes the cake, it’s simple and fluid. No mucking around trying to beat me in the head with lyrics that can go soaring past. Just a simple story about a late night cowboy.

Battle of Evermore (Led Zeppelin): 7
    Sin City (AC/DC): 8.5

The Zepp paved the way for groups like Iron Maiden and The Sword with odd ballads like Battle of Evermore. Anyone that has the balls to create a song with references to The Lord of The Rings is alright with me. Nerd rock at it’s finest. Then the hard rock comes roaring in with Scott screaming about Las Vegas and going broke gambling and I just melt.Throw in Angus losing it on the guitar and I’m all but sold. Bring on the dancing girls!

    The Number One (Atmosphere): X
Fun Fun Fun (Beach Boys): X

  13. Danno says:

Oh those were just examples….there’s also for those about to rock, hells bells, let there be rock, it’s a long way to the top, shoot to thrill….

and to top out the rest of the dozen, which I think you’ve already played, big balls, dirty deeds, back in black, and thunderstruck
